  2. Re:But isn't there room for both? on Apple's Trend Away From Tinkering · · Score: 1

Exactly. Like the desktop Windows, the Windows Mobile OS itself isn't open source, but it doesn't limit what you can do or install on the device. That's the main point.

Symbian used to be same way too, and even while they did all certificates for apps, you can still disable that option and install any third party software on it.

But Apple is directly and solely locking up the device without a possibility to disable that. And in fact it would be great if all Wii, PS3 and 360 were open, but it hurts their sales (like with Apple too). Interestingly, Microsoft is most open with the XNA for hobbyist and indie developers.

  3. Re:It's true on Apple's Trend Away From Tinkering · · Score: 1

This is probably better to compare between commercial software and open source software, ie. Windows & Mac OS X against Linux. FOSS usually tends to have more technical people developing the software who don't always remember usability and interface things. After all a lot of things in Linux are still done in CLI too, which is really powerful and scriptable way to do things, but it really isn't something an non-technical end user will find usable.

On the other hand big commercial software like Windows and Mac OS X have dedicated people working on the GUI and usability side of things (Apple is really known for this). These people have more time and money in hands to actually spend thinking about it a lot, while FOSS developers tend to spend it on new features. Which I would do too, since thats the more interesting aspect.

For example there still isn't a good alternative for Visual Studio. The others kind of get there, but theres always some quirks or it just isn't a complete package. It's done for the FOSS developer's needs who is working with it and either some things are missing or aren't just polished as some other parts of the software, especially on UI side.

Exactly, and it's not like there is so much heavy processing cpu wise. Facebook probably has calculated that they can get enough performance out of recoding the runtime (even 1% is large enough for site as large as facebook). While doing that they also create a faster runtime that everyone can use. Everyone moving to write their sites in C/C++ doesn't make any sense.

Also a lot of the site structure can be cached in memcache or accelerating proxies like squid, so you aren't actually interpreting PHP code lots of the time. Facebook also did a lot of work towards memcache, because they are mostly a DB heavy site, not CPU.

And get friendlier with many of them. It works in real life circles and it works in computer circles - some people are just going to lose interest no matter what you do, so you're better of getting to know as many people as you know (as you're better of getting to know as many girls as possible)

Spreading word about FOSS project is actually no different than what it is in the real world. Charisma, getting people to work with you and having a reason to do so. "Come on, Steve, just think—think, dammit—you're running out of time," the exhausted CEO said as he glued nine separate iPhones to the back of a plastic cafeteria tray. "Okay, yeah, this will work. This will definitely work. Just need to write 'tablet' on this little strip of masking tape here and I'm golden. Oh, come on, you piece of shit! Just stick already!" Middle-of-the-night sources reported that Jobs then began work on double-spacing his Keynote presentation and increasing the font size to make it appear longer.

I also do not agree with their methods, but that is completely against why you do not. There are probably many pirates who did not check that "submit scores" check box. And they didn't even account into that, they just looked at the pure stats on their servers.

And this is an indie company. They have stated they have no interest suing the players who pirate it but want to gather statistics about the how much pirates there are compared to customers. They have no reason to lie about the stats. And from my experience, these stats are close to any other game other than MMO's.

Anyhow, you are free to have your opinion even if I think you're trolling/like to act as a pro-piracy. I'm done with the discussion.
