While I agree there have been several security fixes recently, they have all dealt with issues that would require either an authenticated client or a compromised server. Actually there was one where if you disable logging (verb 0) on the server it could have resulted in disconnected clients.
If your server is compromised you have bigger things to worry about than someone _maybe_ being able to execute arbitrary code on the client (who runs their client as root anyway). If you have a user with a valid key attacking your server you have bigger things to worry about also.
Legit, bought and paid for, just don't wanna deal with the hassle copy protection puts on you, or your source for warez. Whatever the reason... LONG LIVE USENET!

Some people here may be daft enough to think I am reffering to what most people, usually incorrectly, like to refer to as terrorists. Just to clarify, I am reffering to the REAL terrorists, the US government, the UK government, the AU government... any one "power" that, for what ever fucked up reason, thinks they need to decide the fates of others.
Keep in mind, there is a BIG difference between deciding someones fate and *SIMPLY* keeping the peace (emphisis on the word PEACE).
As for the "more than one CD" complaint, Linux distributions these days come bundled with about all the software there is. Windows XP doesn't even include a C compiler as far as I know.
I am sure Microsoft would love to include a stripped down version of VS.NET with XP. With all the grief they are given for including a web browser, what kinda headaches do you think they would get if they started shipping a compiler?
I hear compliants on here all the time about how you get so many more applications with a Linux distribution, and in the same breath how Microsoft should remove things from their OS.
I would LOVE to see Microsoft be allowed to ship more software with the OS. A compiler, an office suite (not just wordpad and Outlook Express), a decent DVD authoring package, something better than MSPaint etc...etc... but people would scream UNFAIR!
To me unfair is Microsoft trying to compete with free when the free side of things doesn't have the same restrictions. Hell even Apple ships most of the popular GNU software with OSX.
Please, someone tell me how that is fair. Did anyone stop and think that maybe if Microsoft didn't have to keep hacking their OS to make various groups / government bodies happy that the OS might be more secure? I mean they already use BSDs ftp (and probably several other BSD utils), it would be real nice if they could have thrown pf in instead of developing their own (potentially less secure / less configurable) firewall.
Could the first real Linux virus be drawing near?" Not from the sound of it: the article says that users would still have to be convinced "to open a malicious document with an unpatched application."
Hmmm, so, Linux is secure because its users are more intelligent than windows users? Or is it that Linux is such a pain in the ass to use as a desktop OS that you have no choice but to have a PHD in CS to use it and therefore would know not to open an unknown atachment.
I just love the double standards.
PS - I know quite a few people that use Linux as a desktop OS that would blindly open an attachment.
I am using the Promise Ultra133TX4 combined with raidtools. Granted this is a 4 port (8 devices) PATA controller but I think the 4 port SATA board they have would suit you fine.
Setting up software raid under Gentoo was a breeze. I have 6 160gig Hitachi drives in a raid5 configuration and it has been rock stable for over a year (only shutdown for the huricanes in Florida and a kernel upgrade).
Just curious -- on the Linux / Unix systems you admin, do you set/usr/local 777 or/var or for that matter/etc.
Hmmmm last time I checked you needed (or at least SHOULD be root to write to those dirs).
Again if you allow your users to have open write access to those directories I feel for you. But if you know of some way I can say..... install apache without installing it in my home dir -- oh wait even if I DID install it in my home dir I couldn't run it because it wants to bind to port 80, I would be most interested.
The fact of the matter is the standard install procedure for Linux / Unix software is:
make configure && make su - make install
And the PROPER way to install software on NT/2K/XP is: right click on install.exe or setup.exe etc..etc choose Run As... and choose an account you have delegated admin privs. to....
Well I can see I am probably gonna get marked redundant because of all the time I took to try and find cheap components... (ohhh wellzerz).
What I would also like to point out to all the people that keep saying "use a magnifying glass" -- well what if the person has palsy, or for some other reason can not easily hold one.
If I read the question correctly... I think he is looking for some kind of camera / monitor setup that can be used to project / magnify on the monitor.... If that is the case I doubt he is going to find one for less than $500.00.
First you need a Camera. Then you need an Arm. (That is IF this is the type of arm I think it is) Finally you need a Monitor (which I could not find one that took composite inputs for cheap AND still have the resolution to display a high quality image). But you can guess that it is gonna be ~$300.00.
Interesting -- First I shouldn't have said "compiled"... I *HIGHLY* doubt anyone has the source to the BIOS -- you are right I should have said "patched". Anyway from what I have read due to some of the security measures in the X-Box the bios was patched using the XDK.
It appears that most people on here don't understand what it is that is "wrong" with the MS X-Box modchip.
A -- It contains MS Proprietary code that is copyright protected. B -- It was compiled using the Microsoft SDK (which in order to have you must sign an NDA and a HUGE EULA)
So _PLEASE_ all the "It is my box I can do with it what I want" comments STOP! Sure it is -- if you wanna hack open your X-Box / VCR / DVD player / Microwave oven and "mod" it by all means do so. But oh -- wait -- you don't have the MS SDK? Or you don't know how to program... well too bad. If someone comes out with a modchip that contains NO Microsoft code AND doesn't need the MS SDK to compile then MS wouldn't have a leg to stand on. But until then (and that will be a while). It is no different than them going after people pirating XP. I am sorry RMS -- I am not a mechanic... I am not a dishwasher... I am not a tollbooth clerk... I wanna get PAID for my programming ability.
The company I was recently "fired" from (sorry I feel a "lay off" implies you _might_ get to come back) paid this service to help with my "transition". So far they have been worthless. Maybe if they spent some of that money on CURRENT employees they wouldn't need this service.
Ok enough with the rant. I have found the best results so far have been from going to individual company websites and doing job searches / applying directly. My resume is on all the usual "head hunter sites" -- www.monster.com www.careerbuilder.com etc...etc. But no luck so far.
If you are looking for help acctually BUILDING your resume I know Monster has a service you can pay.
Anyway -- that is my $.05 worth with the experience I have had so far.
Good luck!
I know why *I* would like to have something...

Digitizing VGA?

...like this cheap (or fairly cheap)... I have an computer that feeds my HD RPTV for doing DVD playback. I also have a WinTV card in it for de-interlacing ntsc. In addition to de-interlacing I also do aspect ratio control since my RPTV is 16X9 and (with the exception of DVD's) most of the material I watch is 4X3 and I don't wanna see sidebars (black bars to fill the extra area of the screen). I would like to be able to feed in RGB (the poster said VGA... but as long as the card can handle the timings of XVGA then it will do 480p, 720p, and 1080i just fine). This would be nice so that I could send the RGB output of my settop box to the capture card and have full aspect ratio control on ALL material 4X3 HD and regular digital cable NTSC without having to switch inputs. If you are really interested, send me an email here. I wouldn't call it internet 3 just yet ... however, it's not your fathers internet.

Just curious can you name me ONE program that you HAVE to be administrator to run if installed properly by the administrator?
I realize some require a little tweaking here and there to not require admin privs. to run. But MOST programs are multiuser aware now.
But I would like to know just one... because I have yet to find one. NOTE - the *IF* installed properly.
