I agree with you to an extent. I KNOW I could've blown past everyone else had I been given the chance. I easily could've been doing calculus by 8th grade. But the pace of my classes were so insanely slow that I got lazy and lost the drive to do any of it at all.
In 4th grade we had a special program going on, if you joined you wouldn't have any report cards, and ALL work would be done at your own pace. I went from doing multiplication to advanced algebra in that 1 year. What's more was it was FUN! I looked forward to doing my math every day, because it was challenging, and I was learning it so quickly. But after that year, I went back into the normal routine (mainly because most of my friends were there), and was eons ahead of the rest of my classmates. So up until about 8th grade I didn't have to try in any classes really. By then I'd gotten so lazy my grades went down to the point where I was failing classes and not even caring because i wasn't interested in any of the crap they were teaching, or it was too slow paced.
How do you teach someone how to apply knowledge they've acquired? Can you teach someone every scientific fact about a brick, and then throw it hard at them and expect them not to get brained?
I know at wal-mart you're not allowed to print any pics off your digital media if you're not the sole copyright owner, or without their express permission. Now anyone can choose to go ahead and print them anyways, but then later when someone find s out, they can't go after wal-mart. They have to go after the copyright infringer.
People haven't understood the power of the internet yet though. Sure you could always take dirty photos and risk your ex showing them to everyone you know. But NOW, they can show them to everyone you know, and everyone you might meet.
People will come around tho.. either we'll stop feeding peoples' bad ethics (spreading gossip), or people will wise up.
Well sir, it appears you've done something wrong. I have newshosting.com and I can download binaries/articles that are over 17 days old. By the way this isn't the first usenet access I've paid for, but I've still never had that problem.
Wicked. I met a few bbs dudes when I was about 8 years old. They came over to my house and installed Duke 3d for me since I paid them $10 for access to their bbs.
I don't like the idea that my isp could arbitrarily block certain ports from being used. I don't need a nanny. I know I'm not typical in this sense, maybe among the slashdot crowd I am, but you gotta ask yourself where do they draw the line? So they start blocking 25 on major isps so all the morans [sic] that got owned can't be used to spam. But how easy would it be for these zombie creators to worm their way around a blocked port? How easy would it be for the zombies' masters to not use the zombies for spam, but for DDOS instead...
Blocking the port at the isp really wouldn't solve anything. Those that don't need the "protection" would be restricted in their net use, and those zombies would most likely just get updated to zombie 2.0 that works around the blocked port.
We need people to LEARN how to use their computers. That would be the ideal solution to most technical problems. But simply blocking access to something (a port especially) isn't going to solve anything.
I'm not talking about myself per say. Just something I imagined most people that watch a lot of tv and ran out to buy a computer from walmart after hearing about this revolutionary program called napster.
Maybe everyone isn't so dumb as to be led so much by advertising. But that would be un-american.
Your comment may be true.. no one IS forcing you to buy the music, but the line that used to seperate WANT from NEED has been blurred beyond recognition. In fact there isn't much of a line like that anymore. Why? Because those who are in control felt it necessary to use advertising that in effect blurred that line out completely. So because some industries felt they needed to blur that line, other industries are eating it because their products can be stolen so easily. Who is going to PAY for something they NEED when its sitting in an open field with no one else around?
I can't think of a single other explanation as to why things are the way they are right now.
We don't have alpha males any more? Since when? Visit a high school for a day. Go to the HQ of some mega corporation. Try to get into the porn business.
To me it sounds like you're saying we don't have alpha males in some sort of 'traditional' sense, but I'm not so sure there is such a thing.
Probably not. I'm sure the US gov't would make life hell for ANY us-born company to sell to Cuba, regardless of how many other nations they're occupying.
And speaking of cubans not caring about computers... I just fixed one's computer while he sat here and intently watched my every move. Then he screwed me out of getting paid. Then he had the nerve to call later that night and tell me he was going to pick me up so I could hook up his printer.
Not solely based upon that small interaction with him, I'm not very fond of cubans in general.
This guy either has some really large juevos or he's incredibly dim. This seems like a very poor idea at times like these when the MPAA and RIAA are going after every torrent site that exists.
Or maybe I don't understand enough legal mumbo-jumbo to point that out...
Did anyone else click the hamster girl's link? It went to a page about how cool it was that Jeremy Ron and Davy made a VIDEO and it got slashdotted. I think we've all been duped into getting some 13 year old some pimp points in the nerd club at school.
(btw: the messed up text thing is really annoying)
Where have you been for the past year? ALL kind of websites have been using it to disperse their precious software without having to pay someone like fileplanet.com to host it. It's an incredible tool for everyone, not just people who have nefarious purposes.
We learned Basic in high school, though I had already dabbled in it when I was 12. We moved on to VB then. In college we took basically the same VB course as was offered in high school, and then moved to c++. C++ was hilarious. These people who came from the VB class expecting more easy BS, were blown away. I think quite a few people changed majors after the first month. Lucky for me (again) I had already been messing with c/c++ since i was 14, so there wasn't much to it.
"This is Ann Coulter reporting to you live on MSGBC."
But they are STFU compliant.
Indeed. I feel the same way to a T. Crazy world eh?

Bravo. But how many lines of coke did you have to do before you could make it sound so pissed off? ;)
How do you teach someone how to apply knowledge they've acquired? Can you teach someone every scientific fact about a brick, and then throw it hard at them and expect them not to get brained?
Exactly.
That would be a turn-on to some girls I know..
Or you could run it under cygwin

I wouldn't hold my breath on the ethics issue.

BBS' were a whole different world. I miss it
Good people, good times, simple ansi.

You said that so eloquently. Very well done.

Just my $.02

And I took my flying car to work this morning.

I was honestly expecting something along those lines. In fact anytime I even hear anything about Star Wars I instantly think of Triumph.
This dribble being posted would never have crossed my mind.

Then I dropped out of college.
