Indeed. In the small town I started driving in cops knew all the little tricky areas where speed limits were a bit harder to obey. For instance, a highway that turns into a 30 mph zone in the blink of an eye. Or sitting at the tail end of a bridge where the speed limit had just switched from 40 to 30. You'd ALWAYS see cops sitting there. Many people were pulled over. Instead of fixing the fuckin roads or signs, they sit there and make money.

I was recently pulled over here in texas after JUST getting my license. I drove down this brand new road that had NOTHING but trees on either side as far as the eye could see. 2 lanes both ways. I figured it was at LEAST a 45 mph road considering the busy ass little street I just turned from was a 40. I didn't see any speed limit sign and I'm usually a pretty good judge of how fast you can drive on a road just by looking at it. Well it turns out it was a 35 mph road and i was going about 52 when the cop jumped out from the trees about a mile down and flagged me over. I about shit my pants. She jumped INTO the road. I thought it was some sort of random terrorist check or some shit. They took all my info and blah blah blah, and when they came back I asked, what the hell is going on? You were doing 55 in a 35. Bite me. First speeding ticket ever. I drove back down that road to see where the fuck the speed limit sign was, and it was RIGHT at the turn. No wonder I didn't see it, I was busy watching the goddamn left turn arrow to make sure I didn't get my ass sideswiped. Needless to say I paid the ticket vs going thru 2 months of court bs like my dad did once, only to end up paying the ticket AND court costs.

    Its bull.

It's not as evil as it may seem. Surely the intent can be viewed as outrageous to those of us who know and love linux and all the free stuff that comes with it. But this will be good for linux and open source in the end.

There will spring all sorts of new inventions from this. Who knows, maybe we'll see a whole new industry spring up to fill the void that was once completely covered by the current industry giants.

I can imagine though this is going to create many problems. Major ISPs may not allow you on their networks if you're not "secure". You will undoubtedly have to use MicroTel hardware at work, therefore if you try to work at home, you'll have to have at least one "secure" computer just to be able to edit your Word document.

I can see Apple gaining a wider audience on the other hand. They're moving TOWARDS open source, not away from it. They seems to have their finger on the pulse of the people.

I'm a bit nervous.. change is always tough.. especially when you've grown up with this industry. But in the end the great spirit of the geeks will emerge. It's too strong.

ANOTHER os?! I didn't even know they existed aside from macintosh. I wanted it soooo bad, but my dad couldn't afford it. In retrospect I think he could, but he didn't want to have to format the hd and lose all his precious stuff.

I became determined to get it. I mowed lawns until I had enough money to buy a stack of game cds from another store for $20 and sold it to Reboot for $25. But as I was going to pick up the OS/2 box I noticed Falcon 4.0 and couldn't resist.

I made my dad proud. But I never tried os/2. :(

I agree somewhat. I mean, if you didn't have plastic, it might be a bit more difficult to come up with a viable snorkel. Certain inventions make others possible; whether due to changed surroundings, or maybe even changed thinking. For instance, maybe it won't be so hard for today's kids to innovate and create things that would be completely incomprehensible to us right now, due to the fact that we didn't grow up on the internet and satellite radio.

On the other hand.. we are getting so much more advanced that it is taking EXTRAVAGENT measures to come up with the best. When you're trying to disappate heat from your tower by making a special fan, you really can't compete with people who are creating nano-tunnels that super efficient at moving heat. It makes you not want to even try inventing things because someone out there will have some incredibly expensive and amazing technology that will blow anything you come up with out of the water.

Not to mention all the red tape you've gotta wander thru - legal fees for one. If you invent something and try to make it available to everyone, you better damn well make sure you're not going to be stepping on anyone else's toes. After you've spent all that money innovating and creating, you can't hardly afford to pay someone to make sure you're not going to get sued into bankrupcy by an honest mistake, but you'd have no choice.

I got into a DUI accident a couple years ago. I had a friend in the car with me, and he was hurt so we called an ambulence. He had a cut on his head that required stitches and a chipped ankle that required a boot for a few weeks.

I was in school at the time and living off my student loans like a lot of other freshmen. I couldn't afford a lawyer, so I went with the public attourney. I figured she would take care of me and get this all settled properly.

I was up against a felony charge of vehicular battery, 1st offense dui, and no insurance (had just dropped it 3 or 4 days before).

I told her what my situation was and waited for her to lay my options on the table in full faith that she was on my side.

    Boy was I wrong.

She basically told me I had to either agree to a plea-bargain of paying my bud's medical bills and doing some jail time, plus paying all other related expenses, or I would be fucked. I asked her what would happen if I didn't want to take the plea-bargain, and without missing a beat she called me "fucking stupid" (no exaggeration).

My eyes just about shot out of my head. I quickly agreed to take the plea bargain thinking my only other option was going to the penn. She wouldn't even discuss not accepting the plea bargain (probably because that would require her to get off her fucking 500 lb ass and DO something). So I got stuck with over $16000 of bills due within 1 year and did a total of 25 days in jail.

At the time I didn't know what my options were. I didn't even know what the felony charge against me was in detail. She NEVER discussed that with me. Basically she strong-armed me into accepting a deal that would get her ass out of doing work.

Vehicular battery is when you cause someone life-threatening injuries with a vehicle that you're operating. My friend's injuries were NOT life-threatening. Later on I spoke with the cop that took me to jail from the hospital, and he told me what exactly that charge meant, and that there was no way I would go to prison for his injuries. I'm not saying it wasn't my fault for hurting him, but even his parents said they didn't want any charges pressed against me (they frequently bought us the alcohol and also provided the place to drink). They even went to the court and told them they did not want me to pay his bills. But it was too late. The deal was signed and I took it up the ass.

I thought well so much for having a free lawyer, lesson learned. Oh but it wasn't free. It took that bitch 3 months of "requesting further time" to get my case handled. All the while racking up hours on my bill. In the end I owed her $700 which was to be paid within 1 year as part of the plea bargain (which was not mentioned to me until the day it was settled).

I was furious. I was SWAMPED with bills and had no decent prospect of paying all those bills off. I was going to pay her lousy fat ass off last. Well it turned out that I had to quit school as soon as the year ended and get a full-time job to start paying this off. My "probation officer" informed me that I would have to make $550 payments every month in order to pay off just the medical portion in time.

At this SAME time my mom was in the process of moving to tx to marry. I wasn't about to try and leave the state, so I found an apt quickly and she lent me a car she had no use for, wanting me to pay her $2000 for it. I didn't last long. I made it about 8 months, BARELY scraping by on a cook position at Perkins. Often I didn't even have money to eat. After that 8th month, I was so stressed out I decided I would skip a payment and EAT FOOD for once. I was contacted by my "probation officer" and told that if I continued to miss any more payments, they would recharge me all over again and I'd be screwed.

I was at my wit's end. I quit my job. I was ready to go buy a gun and fuck some shit up before I left this world. My roommate left me because he had gotten a job in florida, and I was stuck with the full rent, whic

I know what you're saying. I remember not too many years ago feeling quite content with America. I don't understand the people that are feeling quite content with America today.

There have been so many changes it's blistering to think of. A sense of well-being and open possibilities has been replaced with a sense of paranoia and oppression. If you read the news (especially foreign), or pay any attention to politics at least half-assed, you should know that things are not going so well on the American frontier.

Which makes me a firm believer that a good portion of Americans are completely in the dark on some of the most critical issues of today. Sure I've found dozens of websites where these issues are debated, where people seem to be on top of things, but if you ask any random joe on the street, chances are they won't be able to spit out a coherent logical sentence about what the patriot act entails, much less why we should repeal it.

If that's the case then perhaps it wouldn't be so hard to get it repealed after all. It surely would be easier to educate people than to battle them when they are clinging to whatever mr squinty-can't-form-a-coherent-sentence-period says on the tv when the "news" comes on between sitcoms.

Then again, maybe people just don't want to know. Maybe they figure that's what the "leaders" are being paid to deal with and they've been doing a good job (my life is doing just fine), therefore we should all just let them worry about it. That is a scary thought indeed.
