I'll be the first in line to pay. I'll still download some stuff for free if I can't get the quality I want or can't find a particular song, but I'll definately pay for some because I believe this is a step forward for the music industry.
Oh come off it.. does it hurt your image of Stephen Hawking as a god, that someone so ignorant in this field could have possibly had such thoughts? You don't have to live and die for one idea. It may make you an expert, but then again everyone else is an expert too. That doesn't mean that you can't think outside the box every so often.
Sure the first thing everyone thinks is how bad this could be. But I quickly dismissed that thought myself and jumped to the next one which was: How do you stop it? Perhaps somebody with my technical know-how will think the same and figure it out.
Sometimes you gotta use evil means to return heaven-sent ways.
You may very well have lost a daughter. I can't imagine your daughter would be able to take the abuse of thousands of RIAA members.. from the tiny-dick execs to the humongous girthed building janitors...
I'm sure the execs would have their way first, which she probably wouldn't even notice.. but when it came down the the janitors there would be problems.;)
I agree. People don't want to listen to the advertising that pays for all the 'free' stuff we have, yet they certainly don't want to pay a monthly fee because god knows there are enough of those in a month as it is.
What they need to do is charge one large fee for the radio/service and drop the monthly fee. They would get a nice chunk of money right off the bat, and they could charge advertisers a little more. Being that there are certain channels that can't be advertised on wouldn't that create more competition for those channels that allow advertising? I think many more people would buy into Satellite radio, if they didn't try to tack on another monthly charge that could bust a person's budget.
They've already planned to do this. I remember quite a while back when there was an article on slashdot about this... (don't have time for a link, gotta get to class) there's some tower like device that can disable cellphones in a range of a whole block or less... theaters were supposed to begin installing them last year I believe... maybe it didn't catch on quite as quick as they thought?
I went to a special night of the living dead last halloween; it was the silent black and white version. Not a sound was heard except the usual coughing and mumbling, until in the movie the bitch picks up the phone, some wise ass near me in the back yells out "WAZAAAPPP!?" The whole theater was roaring for a good 10 minutes...
I'd like to know _exactly_ how they calculated that value. That seems like just another bloated pull-some-value-out-of-our-ass figure to give a reason to take action.
Maybe it's part of a bigger plan. Maybe since they don't already lose money on this, by MAKING themselves lose money the MPAA can then push congress to pass even more laws, or pull some kind of trick out of their sleeves. That's my bet.
Oh and as a side note, I would much rather just read the book most times. The books are ALWAYS better. That doesn't necessarily mean I go BUY the book either... those things are too expensive when I don't have a job.
Ya because if the prices went up any higher everyone would stop going. I know quite a few people who think it's already ridiculous to watch a movie in a theater. Once the price exceeds what the customer is willing to pay for such 'cheap' entertainment they customer stops paying. Of course I'm not saying they go and download all their movies, heavens no, most of them don't even know you CAN... but I have been known to do that. And let me tell you, thank god I didn't waste money on 90% of them.. the other 10% I usually will go see, or buy when it hits stores.
A year?? I doubt that one... if there are more people like my friend Jared, and I know there are, someone won't sleep until they think of a new way to get ahold of theater movies...
A friend of mine bought a geforce 2 gts back when they were brand new for $100. 3 days after he paid for it, it came in the mail. Not with 1 geforce 2 gts, but two of them. He was very happy indeed.
In closing, as much as I hear about it on slashdot, I don't think that the OSS community really wants to make a desktop for the average user. They want to have thier own "Uber-Desktop" (what is with the German usage anyhow?). They want to live in thier ivory tower and proclaim the rest of the world idiots for not joining them, but at the same time making it impossible for the average user. It reminds me of a time not long past, and an OS that has come and almost gone, DOS.
This is how it has always been with computer nerds and will always be. For the most part computer nerds have no power if they don't know something that the average joe doesn't. They like to tease average joe that he is so dumb, and at the same time try to keep him from becoming 'smart'. Then they bitch when they have to help idiot joe with his computer, when they could have helped him out in the first place.
I agree with you that Linux needs a unified desktop. However I disagree that any linux desktop will be a viable solution for Joe and Jane user any time in the near future. Joe and Jane have been using Microsoft everything since they learned how to half-assed use their PC.
They want to stick to their routines. No, they NEED to stick to their routines because if one little thing changes they are totally confused. If that little 'connect me to the internet' icon is moved an inch to the right, boy they are screwed. There's no way Joe and Jane can possibly keep up with the ever changing Linux.
Unless of course you're going to the biggest computer school in the midwest... funniest thing about it is they can't seem to get their internet connection to work for more than 24 hours at a time... at least with decent speed. Ironic though, as I'm saying this our connection speed just jumped up to about 1500 kbit/s both ways.. before it was more like 250 kbit/s both ways... and it continues to fluctuate on an hourly basis.. ugh... I miss my cable something aweful..
This could be a cash cow with some modifications.. add a little survey of what kind of products the suspect likes, and sell the data to the voracious marketers..
I think what people must realize is federal government is run by a bunch of pansies who would forsake freedom for a temporary feeling of safety It doesn't help that our President lacks the crucial ability of actually being able to lead. I've seen stronger leaders in games of Quake.
More like the feel of incredible power. More like showing off to the other less wealthy countries. These guys are on such a power trip they don't wanna come down. We're plenty safe.
Where do you draw the line? I say fuck the terrorist threat. They've taken out so many bastards already, and many people who probably had nothing to do with terrorists, that I doubt anyone would dare try anything anyway. I'm not saying drop the issue totally, but this is definately going too far. Terrorists attacked America ONE time ONE year ago. How many countries have attacks on a daily basis? You don't see those countries doing this bullsh*t! Why not? Because it wouldn't do any damn good anyway, it would only piss off the already stressed out citizens. How much farther will this bullsh*t go?
obviously you were just lucky... all we had in my hometown back then were BBS' and AOL. That's it. There were a couple of ISP start-ups, but from what we heard from people using them was that they weren't worth the money at all. We simply couldn't wait for AOL to switch to its unlimited plan.. hah...

and i really hate the 20 seconds/2 minutes deal.. thanks taco..

Mod this one one up!! Funny!
Majority rules, get out of here. You aren't going to make anyone admit anything. You're only going to start an insignificant flame war.

At least someone admits they didn't read the article...

haha this should be modded up
