  1. Re:The End of USPS on USPS Ending Overnight First-Class Letter Service · · Score: 1, Insightful

I've said the same thing many times. There isn't a single private business that would be able to survive if it was hamstrung by the same rules and regulations as the Postal Service. They have to fund 75 years of health care and pensions, can't layoff any employees, can't cut salaries or benefits, and can't raise rates without Congressional approval and a rise in the cost of living index (which hasn't happened in 3 years). Any other business would crumble in a heartbeat. The fact the USPS has managed to survive at all is simply amazing and a testament as to how well it really is run. But yeah, you don't ever hear about this stuff on Fox "News", do ya?

Or, y'know, the "features" that mainstream consumers want, like music playback, movie playback, e-book reading, web surfing, email reading, game playing... y'know, those features that don't require a camera, aluminum shell, bluetooth, thinness, extra memory, or a bigger screen.

So to all those people, when you present the Fire and what it can actually do versus what little bits here and there it doesn't have, or has and is inferior to another tablet costing 2.5x as much, I think most people simply will not see the value in all those extra "features" that they just don't care about (and if they did they would have already bought an iPad). Cause when one asks "what can the iPad do that the Fire can't" you wind up with a really, REALLY tiny list. And that, above all else, will be the bottom line, and why Amazon is going to sell millions upon millions upon millions of them. In a nutshell it's all about functionality, not shininess. The Fire can do everything an iPad can do (save camera work) for less than half the price. That's all people want to know, and that's all people are going to care about. The only ones who don't are iPhanbois who are obviously going to nitpick and rip it apart, using the exact same arguments that were used against the iPad (which is deliciously ironic BTW).

    Very biased.

  16. Re:Interesting... on Ron Paul Wants To End the Federal Student Loan Program · · Score: 1

It's an oversimplification that's not going to end how you think tho. You can't just expect schools to slash their fees by 50-90%. Honestly it won't ever happen. In a scenario where there was absolutely no forms of financial aid I think the whole higher education system would collapse. Schools would have to greatly increase their costs in order to stay afloat, state and community colleges would close due to a lack of revenue, and everyone except the wealthy would be locked out of a college education.

    Not really a good idea.

Now if you try to keep other forms of financial aid and only eliminate loan programs we'll still see a dramatic drop in attendance at state and community colleges, and again an increase in costs at bigger schools due to their needing more money for scholarships to cover the loss of loan monies. And again, we're back to a situation where only a narrow segment of the population gets to go to school and rest of us are told "tough luck". Not good for the individual, and not good for the country. It's an idea that's not good for anyone. Well except for rich old white men. It's a great idea for them.

  17. Delusional again on Ron Paul Wants To End the Federal Student Loan Program · · Score: 1

The whole higher education/financial aid/student loan system is in dire need of a massive overhaul; no one denies that. But coming out in favor of just axing the whole loan program is another example of why Ronny should be kept far away from politics.

When a system is broken you fix it, not eliminate it. Or does he expect kids to work at McDonalds or as immigrant-replacement fieldworkers until their 40s before they can afford to go to college?

Don'tcha just love it when rich white guys' ideas to "fix" the government always involves taking resources away from those that weren't born rich? Or weren't born sociopaths, which is pretty much the only way one gets rich in this country if they weren't born into money?

You don't buy legal ROMs, because they don't exist. Your only way to be 100% legal is to buy every arcade machine, cartridge, or disc of the game you want to play and rip them. Which, as I'm sure you're aware, is not a palatable option.

There is a reason that StarROMS shut down. All these games are still under copyright, and the rights holders don't want you to buy the ROMs and use an emulator; they want to sell you the games for use on consoles, phones, PC, etc. Why sell you 1 ROM when they can sell you 5 versions of the same game, one for each platform? There is also the support/QA aspect to consider. If they sell you a ROM and it doesn't work with your emulator, then what?

So put legality out of your head and download all the illegal ROMs you want and enjoy them. Trust me, you'll sleep just fine at night.
