chess is not a "game" in the game theory sense of the word. Every move has known, predicatable consiquences
Now, consider poker....the player cannot predict with complete precision all possible outcomes of a given play
I thought predicting the possible outcomes of a poker game and a chess game is pretty much the same problem. You can see your cards, and in most forms of poker you can see some of your opponents cards. So you can predict the possibility of given hands, and make your bets accordingly.
How do I killfile Katz articels? I always end up reading the first few lines and then realizing, "Hey, this is all OPINION."
Lego Mindstorm in Zero G ROCKS

I can just imagine playing with the mindstorm system in zero gravity... writing programs to spin different motors on different axis with different centers of gravity on their loads... wow. I picture some of the kewl movies of the shuttle astronauts playing with those magnetic marbles... which were also fun in earth gravity.
Once again, the Simpsons' has already covered this:

Episode==BABF03
Apu: Well, sure we have but the decision to have a child
is not to be made lightly.
[Manjula does that "blowing-onto-the-stomach"
routine with Maggie]
On the other hand, monkey see, monkey do.
Homer: [chuckles] Kids are the best, Apu. You can teach
them to hate the things you hate. And they
practically raise themselves, what with the internet
and all.

Broadcast everything important into space.
If we ever need it again, we just zip out along the transmission wave at realitivistic speads, until we get to the bytes we want, slow down and read them, then zip back home.

Technology is advancing. How long before everyone gets a palm pilot type memory device implanted permanantly? I know I'd be close to the front of that line.
So if we scorn the use of technology to enhance our memories, will we be unprepared when it becomes very simple to "add" a few SIMMS and never forget that first kiss, or how about someone else's first kiss?
Few people know how to kill their own supper... this article is complaining about the same type of "loss of skill" which is part of our evolution.
When a telemarkter calls, keep them on the phone as long as possible, driving up their long distance bill. Sometimes I'll be playing the piano, phoen rings, telemarketer, "Hold on, I'll get him", put the phone on the floor and go back to playing the piano. Or better yet, pretend you're interested and ask a ton of stupid questions, have fun, then hang up or say, "Let me get my check book"
"It's not a scam see, you give them all your credit card numbers and they tell you if one of them's lucky!"
Rubber band this to a lego robot and build a web interface to drive it around the house and you've got a fun little toy to play with at work. Plug the video outputs to your video capture card.

Couple radio shack catlouges had these little sensors that would record the data, then you hook it up to the serial port to download it leter.
If you need a ton of data, or if you need it real time, this might not work.
But it you only need a little data, you can set the things to record like once an hour I think, and then download it like 2 weeks and it should be fine.
Just searched their website and didn't see it though.
I have been reading e-books from PeanutPress.com and FictionWise.com for about 5 months now.
The convience of having the book on my PalmV is amazing. I carry the Palm everywhere, and if I have a few spare min I turn it on and read. In line at a store, on the can, in a plane, with green eggs and ham... it's awsome.
The Palm has a backlight feature, which my SO loves too. She no longer has to fall asleep with the light on. I always read myself to sleep and with the eBook I can do it with the backlight.
My primary style of literature is Science Fiction, and there are countless references to authors touting the "Death of the Book." I used to count myself on the side that would resist it, but having tried it I love it. If the title I plan to read next is available in eBook, I'll read it on the Palm.
I just wish I had a dictionary on the palm... right now I "Annotate" my copy of the ebook, a feature of peanut reader which lets you write a note and refernce the page. When I'm next at my desktop I look the word up at dictionary.com.
I did some college but didn't finish. I've found that most employers who know what they're doing will treat 4 years in the industry about the same as 4 years of college.
Most important on the resume seems to be the technology and the fact that you'll hit the ground running.
This morning at 9:30, on "The Exchange" on New Hampshire Pulic Radio, Slashdot was mentioned as "This really good techincal news website" and they talked about the Kerberos/Microsoft continuim. M@
Does a solar sail only work "downwind"?? Or can you it work like a sail in the wind, allowing you to head "upwind" at an angle? I suppose the photons would have to "stick" to one side and not the other... anyone know the answer?
[Dundie Accent ON] You call that a Chair? That's not a chair. Now this is a chair.
By that logic a crane can only lift as much as the person who built it.

Did Bill ever have to call a COM object from C++?
Pi day and Pi time... my interpretation of Pi time anyway... as I'm sure there will be others.

Nice to see a device like this being touted without a single microsoft technology on the specsheet.
