I've recently been laid off, and I was thinking about looking for something entry-level in the IT field (help desk or something) and trying to get a foot in the door somewhere. (Hell, I've been looking at doing IT work all my life, but just never finished the BS in CS.)
Does it help to have worked on projects that you can show to someone? Will they care to see example code, or does this not come up as long as you can "talk the talk"?
The reason I ask is that, unfortunately, I've not written a line of C/C++ in over 6 years, and most of my recent work was done AT work (mostly JavaScript and VB, but I can pick up most languages pretty quickly), which then became the property of my company and was lost along with my job...in short, I can perform but I have nothing to show, and very little time to whip up something impressive to show off. Will that kill my chances?

Microsoft is trying to enter a market here that they don't stand a chance of controlling, mainly for bragging rights - I think that's got to be good for the market as a whole, because as I said, they have a lot of bright people working for them, and may bring some useful tricks to the party.
Keep that in mind when they start patenting their new tricks and attempting to sue the pants off of the free software developers who attempt to write comparable software.

Most people I know, however, solve the morning dilemma by leaving their computers powered on overnight. Costs the company more, but if I arrive at 9 and they're going to not pay me (or penalize me, even) because their sluggish PC takes 15 minutes to start, then they're going to pay via the grid.
It's not about the time I give to my employer, it's about the time they take from my day. They PAY for my services, if they want me to arrive earlier because their PC takes forever to start, then they need to compensate me to do so, or find another solution (faster startup time, etc).
Read somewhere that hydraulic-pumps up in the air on the turbine with hoses all leading to a central electric generation plant nearby brings down the maintenance cost considerably. Efficient generators are more expensive and require more skilled maintenance than hydraulic-pumps factoring in the loss of efficiency with the hydro delivery system.
