I'm not so sure. I have a FastLane pass (known in states outside of Massachusetts as E-Z Pass) which is an automated toll collection device which works on all major toll highways in the New England/New York area. I've never gotten a speeding ticket mailed to me, dispite the obvious simplicity of discovering I must have been speeding to go from Exit 22 (Downtown Boston) to Exit 2 (Lee, Pittsfield, Adams.. i.e. the edge of the state next to New York) in about an hour and a half (at approx 123 miles, that puts me at an average of 80mph, which, yes, on a fast day of traffic can happen).

Then again, while I'm speeding, the State Police regularly pass me without so much as caring one bit that I'm bombing around at top speed, so perhaps Oregon is a bit more strict?

The real problem arises now with "Panther", the forthcoming Mac OS X release. Panther will cause a severe kernel panic on any old-world ROM machines, meaning the GUI (along with the rest of the OS, including the supplied version of the kernel) has been changed so as to break older machine support. Of course, these reports come from the rumor mill, but it wouldnt' be a suprise to me. However, I wonder if this would cause any problems with MOL, and it certainly won't work on a hacked boot loader.

  23. Re:Opportuinity on Hacking the XBox · · Score: 1

Well, they way I see it, they loose $100 per unit sold. So if they sell 500 units, they loose $5000. Which sucks, until you realie that those 500 people might buy a total of 5 games apiece, let's say. If MS gets $5 per game, they make back $2500. Now imagine once they get caught up to Sony for the sheer number of titles availible. Each person, over the length of their X-Box ownership, buys say 20-25 games. It starts to add up in MS's favor, as slowly over time they make their money back. (These figures, you might note, are made up, but this is how the actual scheme of things is working).

If people bought X-Boxen just to watch movies and play music, Microsoft loses $100 on that unit, and has no chance of recovering it. Not that everyone would buy it and not play games, but it's better if 100% of customers are buying games. Even those who mod their X-Box are playing games, what geek doesn't love a good game now and then?

That made me think of something funny. Everyone buy X-Boxes for you AND your friends and mod them for video and music etc.
    Then dont' buy any games!
