Er... only if it already was that way. If something compiles in 10 seconds, 142% faster would mean it compiles in 4.13 seconds now... as long as I didn't screw up the math, which I'm sure I did.
I guess I don't particularly understand why that's a bad thing. Supposedly, once WINE is complete, it will be able to run everything at native windows speed (and occasionally faster). I don't really see the disadvantage of running under a high-quality future version of WINE as opposed to native code... and it allows developers to concentrate on the actual game rather than making sure they write portable code... not that portable code isn't a nice goal.
Personally, I'd rather have WINE working good enough to play all the windows games than trying to convince all the developers that Linux is a good gaming platform.
Er... maybe my math is screwed up, but I only get 10 minutes for an entire disc copy. The disc holds 2.8GB, so 5MB/s would transfer the whole disc in 560 seconds or 9 minutes and 20 seconds. Still not very preferrable... and I'm probably missing something blatantly obvious, so feel free to slap me if so...
Here's one for ya. My fiance and I just purchased a $100,000 home. We don't really make a whole lot of money, but since I'd been paying on time on an expensive loan for a few years, my credit was good. My fiance has no credit at all. Remarkably, even though that's no problem, I constantly get rejected for credit cards that have a limit of more than two or three hundred dollars. Apparently different companies look at the scores in drastically different ways, or something.
This is the exact same story from my junior high. Two friends and I got into the Novell networks, got caught 'cause we didn't really care about it and used our real names to see how long it took them to find us. Well, 8 months later, they finally did, threatened us with some felonies, and told us that we might possibility to *gasp* _TEACH_ a TYPING class! Oh no! Then they just forgot about it, apparently.
Obviously you've forgotten that unless we explore space and set up permanent colonies all the Earth exploration won't do our species much good when the supervolcano erupts, the next big rock slams here or the Sun finally dies killing us all.
Er... isn't the expected lifespan of the sun another 5 billion years? I think if we survive without any major catasrophe's, we probably won't still be worrying about space travel... nor would we likely look the same as evolution would probably have a couple things to say along the way.
Big rocks, supervolcano's, and omnipotent monkeys made of pure energy could still do us all in long before that, though.
I've heard a lot of complaints about printers, but I've never had a problem... (using Mandrake 7.0) I've setup a HP Laserjet 4-something, Canon BubbleJet (don't know the model #), and a Lexmark color Inkjet of some model (sorry, I don't tend to memorize my printer models and I'm not at home right now). In all cases, I just ran the printtool setup thingy, told it what printer I had, and it was good to go. Not sure how well this sets up on non-Redhat-based systems.
PRISON is for keeping violent people from hurting the rest of society.
Wha..??! Nonono... Prison is that place where we lock up a whole bunch of non-violent pot-smokers so we have an excuse to let the violent rapists and killers go early! Silly you!
Or, if you were *really* resourceful, call the phone company and see if *they* can do something about the guy spamming you. Can't hurt to call. (Heck, you could even just get caller ID, and reject lines that have it blocked.)
I just got a nice new AT&T phone with all the built in caller ID functions. Has a nice feature which allows me to record caller specific messages for the answering machine to play, and also whether or not to allow them to leave a message. If the caller ID is intentionally blocked, the machine tells them that I don't accept messages from blocked IDs. Can set up a similar thing for "Unknown" calls too, or specific phone numbers... although I have yet to find a telemarketter that doesn't show up as unknown or private.
It's called a universal translator....and it USUALLY worked. Shows you how much of a geek YOU are. Ha!
Ahh, yes... the magical universal translators... did they ever explain how those things could instantly know a language it's never heard before without even hearing anything spoken ahead of time?
RedHat is the distribution that most other distros are based on (Trustix, TurboLinux, Mandrake). Will these distributions have issues with the Pentium VI?
Where can I go to get information on a real fix for this issue other than installing RedHat/TurboLinux exclusivly on Pentium VI boxes.
Is the Pentium 6 out already? Those guys are fast.
It's nice to know that there are some kernels of undigested corn that are just being flushed down toilets, while a bunch of poor people are going to starve to death this winter.
Your argument is equivalent to mine. Do you see why it is unconvincing?
Do you seriously think those arguments are equivilant? One argument is that someone is spending a few million dollars on something that he'll hardly ever use, and gain no REAL satisfaction out of, when he could be helping people that are dying. The other is saying that people should scoop up their shit and feed it to the needy. If you honestly think those arguments are even remotely equal, you are incredibly pathetic.
How often do you hear someone say "Hey, nobody ever helped me, everything I got I earned... if someone's in the shit, it's probably their own fault"?
You're full of crap.
The one I usually hear is, "Poor people are poor because they're lazy." or something very similar disguised to not appear as ignorant... That's almost what the above quote was saying.
Yeah, I was quite a bit disgusted, especially considering that while I'm making a mere $35,000 a year and donating most of my spare income to charity, these guys are building waterfalls that could keep an entire third-world country alive.
Ours is pretty much the same, here in Michigan. We fill out an application with our name and address on it, then they check their records and give us a ballot. Someone registered but not voting? Go right on in and do it... they don't check ID. Pretty lame, indeed.
I was gonna comment on the same thing. I've been running on AMD K6-III 400Mhz for the last year, and Quake n' UT work just fine (even with my 50% defunct Voodoo3... got hit by lightening). The GeForce2 GTS I just got made everything all happy and such. Who the hell seriously thinks that a 700-800Mhz machine is low end? For Christ's sake. The market may improve rather quickly, but anything released less than a year ago is not "low end".
That could get REALLY messy...

Eeeew, it wasn't really THAT exciting...

Nor did he say it was. He was replying to a comment about putting mp3 code into the linux kernel.

That was mentioned in the article.
Thunderbird==Athlon.
Duron==Athlon-some_cache.
You can verify this if you look at AMD's website. They have links to their Athlon Thunderbird processors, and to their Duron processors.
Athlon can't be dead if Thunderbirds aren't.
The problem isn't that less people know how to use them, it's that more people are using computers. Makes the proportion of knowledgable look smaller.
...I still get my email through the local freenet (which is no longer labelled as such)...
Yeah, the down side is it's harder to vote for the winner... we are talking about horse racing, right?
I filled in little bubbles, so I guess that fits under C.
