True that the new interface is very minimalistic, but remember that a few clics will bring you the old interface back. And there is also 'status bar foreva'.
Hmmm... Are you running Firefox beta portable? In any case, here's my experience: I have: Firefox 3.6, Firefox 4 beta portable and Pale Moon portable. When I go to Plugin Check and update, only Firefox 3.6 gets updated. If I recall correctly, I manually copied the Flash DLL from my User > Application Data > Mozilla > plugins into Firefox 4 beta port. and Pale Moon port. "plugins" folder. Now all of them are up-to-date. Someone else may explain it better but the gist of the solution is that the relevant DLLs in Fx 4 port. and Pale Moon port. plugins folder need to be manually updated.
godel_56 beat me to it: Use JavaRa to get rid of old installations of Java. However, Sun/Oracle wised up a bit and current versions of Java have this issue fixed --If memory serves me right. No more crap left over when updating _fresh installs of current JRE_.
- Constantly adding features to beta software. Example: Tab Candy/Panorama was added late in the game and it caused *lots* of bugs and regressions. Tabs on the Title bar was also added late in the game.
- Not fixing old bugs. Some of them are really, really old and affect performance and standards compliance. Pair the not fixing of bugs with adding features, which, in turn add more bugs and you get mayhem.
- Mozilla devs constantly refuse to respond to users' fair requests. For example: Users have asked for full implementation of SVG fonts for a long time. Another example: "Paste and Go" was requested in 2002. After years of abandonment, the bug was closed because "this feature can be better implemented via an extension". Then, in 2009/2010 there was a poll in Reddit to see what features Firefox users wanted. They asked for "Paste and Go", among other things. Firefox 4 has it, at last.
- Removal of features, which have to be added back via extensions. Example: RSS feed icon on the location bar culled from Firefox 4.
tl;dr: I'd rather have Mozilla devs concentrate on fixing existing bugs before they start adding new features.
Not many years ago they pulled the same manure: Your Zodiac sign is probably wrong because there's a 13th sign --Ophiucus. This happened in the late 90s - early 2000s and it happened before. And it will happen again. Sadly.
Well, in Firefox 4 you can easily get the Menu bar back and I'm sure there are extensions/styles/scripts to get the Title bar and the status bar back in all their glory. But note that the minimalistic design isn't designed to make Firefox faster. It's designed to make Firefox (and the other browsers) _seem faster_. There even were some pages at Wiki.mozilla abut making Firefox faster and also making it _look_ faster.
And yes, the mainstream browsers do look a bit alike. At least IE9, Fx 4 and Opera 11 look similar to me.
Sorry for the spam, I forgot to say that, apparently, the sleeker the interface (minimal design) the faster the browser seems. Look at around 6:10 in the video mentioned above.
Mike Beltzner says that the trend for mainstream browsers is a minimalistic interface in order to give more room for web pages. The web content is important, the browser must remain in a discrete supporting role. http://videos.mozilla.org/serv/air_mozilla/firefox4.ogg
Well, I think Firefox looks more like Opera than Chrome. In my system, the main difference between Fx and Opera is the orange Vs. red menu button. YMMV, though.
They replaced the Status bar with an Add-on bar. It lacks some features of the status bar (showing links' URLs). People who like the add-on bar but still want more browsing space can try Autohide Add-on bar http://userstyles.org/styles/37319 and Animated Addons Bar http://userstyles.org/styles/40215 .
I mainly use Firefox, but I prefer Opera's tab stacking to Panorama. As parent says, Panorama makes you leave the main browsing interface. I think it's a bolted-on feature and the bugs at bugzilla seem to confirm that suspicion.
The oldest bugs in Mozilla are ~12 years-old (from Netscape times). There are quite a few 11, 10, 9, 8... years-old bugs. A curious case: There was a 2002 or 2003 bug about implementing 'Paste & go' functionality. That bug was abandoned for years, well, with lots of discussion going back and forth. Finally, the bug was closed as won't fix or invalid. Then, the GUI team asked in Reddit about what the users wanted. Paste & go was one of the things they wanted. A few months later, Paste & go was implemented. Now I want to see the faces of all those who argued for years that this feature was not needed/too complicated/etc. Of course, there was at least one extension that added paste and go to Firefox. Thank $DEITY!

This Stylish style implements tabs on titlebar when window is NOT maximized. I think there's some talk amongst Fx developers about implementing this feature (tabs always on titlebar). Apparently, they worry about leaving some space for dragging the window, that's why they don't put tabs on the titlebar when not maximized. Might be relevant: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=572160
Yep, in some other European countries porn on the net is "free for all to see". Once you click the "I'm 18+" button in a porn site, the fapverse is yours. That, or there isn't such button. If you see pics of tits and wangs, you know where you are.

Gotta catch 'em all!
You can get most of the old GUI back without any add-on with just a few clicks. For the status bar, Status4evar https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/status-4-evar/ or wait for Pale Moon 4 to be released in a few days.
HTML5/Javascript-intensive pages can bring Firefox to its knees. Even Firefox 4.
Bug 119490 - Implement SVG fonts: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119490 There has been some movement on that bug lately.
Apparently, they are satisfied with 97/100: http://limi.net/articles/firefox-acid3/
On Windows, to get the statusbar back install Pale Moon: http://www.palemoon.org/ Pale Moon 4 will probably be available a few days from now.
True. Even Google Translate lets you know it's about the explosion in the_3rd reactor_ .
+1 Unfortunately, the times are-a-changing here.

Yep, apparently the mainstream browsers broke the classic GUI, starting with Chrome -I guess-. Now it's a trend: http://slashdot.org/comments.pl?sid=1951640&cid=34888476 I think you might be interested in this bug: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=624129

Sorry, the Tabs on titlebar feature is for Vista/7 and somehow implemented in XP & 2000. I think Linux is lacking them too.

Yep. At 4chan and other chans some people love children a bit too much.
