As interesting a concept as it is you have SO MUCH more freedom in the outside. I work for a.net writing code and I coudln't love it more.
I get to design ALL my programs the way I want, and code them however I want. I document all my design and code thoughorly and use coding standards out of personal pride for my work. It doesn't take THAT long to write this stuff and is of invaluable assistance.
As a fringe benefit I can play my guitar while I'm thinking up design ideas, wear bob marley T-shirts, smoke pot (off the job, of course... for that matter why would ANY employer care what I do off the clock), keep any hours I please, and the only boss I have is the owner of the company, who is a really nice guy.
I wouldn't give up that kind of freedom for all the money in the WORLD. Money is not an end to itself and anyone who chases dolars for THAT reason alone really need some help. Remember we only take the soul with us.. the materials get left on earth.
And as long as I do well, and my coworkers are motivated to do well we ALL have job security.
The only way to maintain this motivation is to allow freedom of expression and freedom to create when and where I feel most comfortable.
I honestly do not see a single advantage to government work. Of course I'm a person who is perfectly capable of making my own descions and don't need some regimented wank who doesn't know jack about the creative process teling ME what to do.
Or possibly one about a band full of very talented musicians with a large local fan base but can never get signed because they arn't all pretty boys/girls with perfect teeth and skinny asses.
THIS is a greater horror to humanity than ANY amount of file-sharing is to the Rapin' RIAA.
"I believe it's not only a world-beating British invention, but it is going to save thousands of lives every year."
Okay this is a cool idea and I can dig it, I too am sick of hearing little electronic versions of Fur Elise everywhere I go. But why in the HELL should I care if it was invented in Britan?
Oh jesus! That has to be one of the most beautiful things I've read on slash dot! TOo bad it was posted anon, but I whole heartedly agree. DOWN WITH THE BUZWERDS.
Okay, now it's early in the morning and I am a bit irritable, but PLEASE GOD somebody tell me how it is that this troll got moderated to FIVE?
This person appears to think hat any software running on windows is made by Microsoft. How could such an ignorant statment be moderated anywhere but DOWN?
Hundreds of GIGs of free software? Are you sure you know what a gig is? Or are you just confused as to what FREE means?
And there's just one more thing I've got to say.. something-O-O something-O-O economics?? VOODOO Economics.
Just give money to rich people and out of the kindess of their heart they will make damn sure that he give all the money back to the people by employing people for exactly the minimum amount they can possibly be paid while the 5 or 6 fat cats make ALL the money and buy sports teams, ridiculously large houses and stupid looking museums.

The USPS should never care being as they are a government entitiy which is funded entirley by stamp sales. The USPS's function has never once been to make money, their function is to deliver mail which our leaders have deemed a vital function in our society.
Besides, any money the government makes is EVENTUALLY (after 80% of it is flushed into the proverbial beurocracy bowl) spent on the people anyway.

While it is true that kids ARE impressionable I never started smoking cannibas until I was 21 years old. I was always around it, some of my frineds always smoked it. I tried it here and there, but it just didn't do anything for me.
When I got into my senior year of college I began to feel a lot of stress. Classes were harder, I had to worry about leaving the educational institution, the only way of life I've known since I was 5. I found that it creates a wonderful stress releaf, and allows me to relax at night after all my work is done. No, I don't NEED it to relax, but it allows me to leave school at school and forget my stresses.
And another note, go to any high school in the United States and ask kids what's easier to get, marijuana or beer? What do you think you will hear?
Marijuana can be bought out of people's homes, out of their cars, at school, anywhere where anyone has quantity they want to give up in exchange for cash. Due to government regulation The only place you'll find alchahol is at a store where they will certainly NOT sell to underagers.
Alchahol was a real pain to get in high school. We generally only got it when someone's older brother was home from college.

Well how do you expect "Egocentral Americans" to learn any other language when they can travel THOUSANDS of miles and still speak the same language with the same dialect and spend the same cash.
Do you think I don't WANT to know another language? That'd be cool as hell.. and I bet I'd get a few ladies with it too. But alas, it's impossible to learn a new language preoperly because every freakin place I go people are trying to speak to me in english.
I'm trying to figure out what's wrong with Nazi memorabilia? I'm not a Nazi by any means, and don't even agree remotley with their politics or the atrocities of WWII.
But what the hell is wrong with trading the Nazi relics of the war? Some of us are history nuts who collect anything from WWII. Some of us keep momentos of teh past around for people of the future to learn from.
Not allowing people to trade relics doesn't mean that it will all go away. Alowing someone to own a relic of the Nazi past doesn't make them an instant Nazi. I really don't even see why there's a problem here.

I will generally give you a "write on, brother" but dude, don't ever lump LSD together with heroin. LSD (the drug) has never directly killed anyone, and if taken in the right fram of mind can be very enlightening and if you are at all hedonistic it can be extremley fun. I'm so tired of all the lies surrounding LSD. It is a perfectly safe drug that needs more psycological research to see how it can benefit man kind. Heroin is a very addictive and deadly drug that should never be touched by ANYONE.
And before anyone poopoo's my opinion of LSD please check the facts about that one guy in college who took it and jumped in front of a car or jumped out of a window. This kind of thing generally does not happen to normal people who take it. Crazy people who take it just get crazier.. that is not good.

The recording industry will suffer? The worst thing to ever happen to the recording industry is money. The industry take focus groups and create bands with absolutley no soul, hock em on Mtv for all they're worth and then, when they're washed up a year later they create a new one.
Legitimate music, the good stuff, can only be found at small shows and in clubs where the artists are poor, but talented and happy, they play music for the passion. They sell their CD's for $10, which I gladly pay for good talent.
I would never think of mp3ing their CD's because they get pretty much all the money from the sale (less the production cost), and they deserve it. I also would never think of paying $18 for a piece of crap CD with maybe one good song on it.
When I mp3 that one good song of theirs I really don't loose any sleep. They are making way more money than I am (the execs, the artists, etc), and way more than they deserve to concidering the quality of their music.
This will never happen, but if the major music labels die due to music piracy it will be a good day for the music appriciating world, let me tell you.
Don't you guys listen to the modern schlock pushed upon us by Mtv and the radio. The industry MUST have had this technology for at least 5 years if not more. All they have to do is find a few pretty boys who can fake playing a guitar pretty good and sing not too bad.. then viola! You have a poopy pop band. Ever since the last Dire Straits video was played on Mtv, we have all suffered greatly.
His name given by his mom was something different.. I forgot for now, but is dad later named him "James Marshall Hendricks." Jimi later changed his name to Jimi Hendrix. That's it.. that is his full name. So next time a half-wit music historian with no skills tries to impress everyone by calling him "James Marshall Hendrix" you can quickly correct him and be your own little rock n' roll hero.
The fellers down at SGI gave a talk at my school's LUG (Waashington State University) a while back and we had to telnet to it via serial port because there's no USB support in Linux, and this box has USB everything. So does anyone know if SGI is going to release all their patches to the public? I'm assuming they wouldn't release a inux box that you can't use a keyboard or mouse with.
