If cDc is sincerely concerned with M$ security they would have given M$ and the public suggestions on how to fix the problem but instead they release this dumb program to show that it could be done. I find cDc's analogy quite funny in a sense that it is flawed and no one in the right mind would formulate the same analogy.
I do not even know why they are making such a big deal out of this. It is the same as the original Back Orifice + NT capabilities which requires that the infected program be run by Administrator. One could say that this could be done the same for UNIX or BeOS provided that the "Super User" is the one who will be running the infected program. Most large corporations are very careful about running unsupported software (i.e. stuff that's downloaded from the internet) anyway so I doubt this would make a big impact to most people. I see the target of Back Orifice 2k as Warez kiddies who probably didn't pay for their WinNT licenses anyway.

When asked why we do it our response would be that it is for our national security and what we are doing is for the good of the universe. Hey, what's good for us must be good for them too right? We might even make them try to convert to Christianity and tell them that Jesus also died for their sins.

Harvard has the right to do anything to the site. Keep in mind that Ken was _INVITED_ to run the site using Harvard's network connectivity and therefore this is Harvard's party, if you do not like the rules then you can take your business elsewhere. I am impressed at Harvard handled the entire situation by deciding to not host the site. The same thing goes with anything. How would you like it when you invite me over to your house and then suddenly you see law enforcement raiding the entire place just because I had a search warrant and I didn't tell you.
We are not sure if Harvard was aware of the "extra" content on the server specially the/JP directory which seems to be the cause of this whole problem and I am pretty sure that if they (Harvard) were aware of this then they would have asked that the pornographic and libelous content be removed or else. Harvard offered to host the site because of the security related content. Nuns covered in seminal fluid doesn't fit in this category regardless of public opinion
Everyone seems to be missing the whole point to this whole fiasco -- these two people are just trying to get public attention by trying to get the entire planet involved in their little skirmish. I remember about a couple of years ago when JP's original AntiOnline server was shut down by his college (pitt.edu) because the content was considered inappropriate by the college and we can clearly see that he is now trying to make his past situation the same for Ken Williams. There are also several hundred clues that I have found out that tell me that JP is a very unliked individual in the "underground community" which is an oxymoron in itself considering most of the people who claim to be in this community are always trying to get public attention by whoring themselves out to the press (i.e. Pete Shipley, Se7en, Brian Martin, route, Carol Meinel, John Vranesevich, etc...). There are also several clues that tell me that alot of people try to take what JP says out of context to discredit him and this really pisses me off because these people are doing exactly the same thing JP is and it is really does not help in ther vendetta against him. Then there are clues that tell me that JP is a self-centered egomaniac who deserves what he gets and his contradictive statements make him look bad in everyone's eyes. I can also see that Ken Williams and his friends has tried to twist the truth to make it look like only JP is in the wrong but after looking at the supposed mirror of the/JP directory at www.Genocide2600.com/JP I have seen that JP was actually wronged by these people and that Harvard's actions were justified and that they should not even be involved in JP and Ken's fiasco.
If only we stopped giving in to our crab mentality and refrain from trying to bring people down and just worry about more serious things such as helping the Open Source community, making the public aware of security issues, and to advance in scientific studies we would be in a better shape than the next inhabited star system in the universe.
Are you on some kind of medication? Do you honestly believe that the movie is going to be out on video by July 1999? Maybe you will be one of the warez kiddies who will be downloading a crappy VIVO version of the movie come July 1999.
It is funny how people try really hard to BE different from the rest of the world. I mean, does it really mean that much to you that you want to sacrifice the opportunity to see the movie the way it was meant to be? I am going to see the movie on the very first public showing in my city and I will be one of the several hundred people chanting the Imperial Death March song while waiting in line for the auditorioum to open. This is an experience that I have missed out on when I was a child when the first Star Wars came out because I was too young to be admitted to a movie theatre even during the showing of RotJ in the early 80's. I wish they would let me take my 4 year old son for TPM but I guess he'll have to wait until Episode II or Episode III to get that experience.

Star Wars has always been a movie that appeals to the younger crowd. You think when the original trilogy was made that George Lucas had the older crowd in mind? Just look at most of the dialogue in the older Star Wars movie. I'm pretty sure Princess Leia could have used a more adult term for "Stuck-up, half-witted, scruffy-looking, nerf-herder". As far as I know, the older crowd during the late 70's were still coming down from their LSD trips. If you don't want to see a movie that is specifically made to attract the younger crowd then don't, but you will know deep inside that you are going to be missing alot.
Don't watch it and expect to see the best movie of your life, watch it and expect to see the most fantastic fairy-tale science fiction storyline of all time.
Expect me to skip work on the 19th, camping out very early in the morning in front of my movie theatre with 12 tickets in my wallet. One for my wife and the rest for me. I'm not going to let a bunch of stupid critics ruin my life.
Depending on what you are going to user Oracle for. If you are going to use it as a back-end for web applications and for that purpose alone and you can predict that you will have a fairly small environment that is going to be painless to manage then you should probably go with Linux. If you are expecting to grow the database farm and you are planning on using commercial database management tools (BMC Software, Platinum technology, etc...) then you should use Solaris since these tools are not yet and probably will never be available for Linux. It is also much easier to find DBAs and System Managers who have alot of experience on running Oracle on Solaris since Oracle for Linux has only been around for less than a year and there is a very low count of people who have experience in deploying, using, and supporting it in a business environment.

It is funny that Nintendo thinks that the number one cause of N64 game piracy are emulators. They do not realize that there are devices being sold all over the world that will let you store ROMs into a Zipdisk and play the games directly from these copies.
Nintendo 64 sucks anyway. There are no real role playing games that has been released in N64 that is as good as Final Fantasy VII or Final Fantasy VIII and Zelda 64 simply sucks. Maybe if they started releasing better games and spent their money on real talent instead of hiring stupid lawyers then they would probably do better in their business.
Doctors take an oath stating that it is their duty to save lives. Abortion doctors have broken that oath and their names should be made public so that people are aware that these doctors take that oath for granted. Would you like to be treated by a doctor who also performs abortion? I personally would like to be treated by a doctor who has a conscience.
Abortion is murder, plain and simple! People who believe in pro-choice do not understand what it truly means to have "choice". When an expectant mother goes into an abortion clinic she is making a greedy choice. She does not realize that the baby she is killing is alive and should have more of a right to choose. The same people who say "it's my body and I will do what I want with it" do not realize that the fetus is NOT their body, the fetus develops its first heartbeat after 3-4 weeks. Most people who are pro-choice have never seen an actual ultrasound of the fetus, seen someone or have personally been in labor, held a baby in his or her arms, and looked directly in the infant's eyes and see the joy of being brought into this world to experience life.
- father of 2 and expecting one more on the way
I wonder what you would feel if your mother told you that when she was pregnant with you that she had plans of having you aborted. Abortion kills the very essence of human existence. If you are not ready to have a child then you should think more than twice when you get in bed with someone and you should definately use birth control techniques (other than post conception techniques).
Gee whiz! Now everytime you have to upgrade your processor you'd have to reinstall/reconfigure software. CPU IDs don't work with Operating System software either so expect to see Windoze [whatever] and other commercial operating systems to be pirated by warez kiddies.
Most companies use some kind of disk imaging software to copy hard drives to do corporate-wide deployment of workstations. Now they will have to register each piece of software on every machine. Although this could be avoided by implementing the network computing concept it is still going to be a problem for alot of companies who don't have enough networking power to provide such capabilities
Uhm, how will this prevent software piracy? I'm pretty sure someone will break this algorithm within a year and publish it all over the WWW. This would also require other processor companies to implement CPU ID on their products.
I wonder how many H-1 Visa employees at Intel worked on this and how many of them already have given blueprints of the algorithm to their cousins in New Delhi.
I wonder how an ID is going to help e-commerce. How will they keep track of who owns the CPU ID? What if I stole a computer from a store and then I use a carded ISP account to connect to the internet then they would not be able to find me. I think this is another piss-poor attempt of Intel trying to provide people with a false sense of security. How will people who do not have Intel chips (or a PC for that matter) be able to buy goods online if such a CPU ID is required to conduct e-commerce. I'm pretty sure no e-vendor would limit their customer base to Intel users only. I think this is a waste of research time and anyone who buys an Intel chip because of this feature is an idiot. I hope Intel chokes on its own poo with this one.
A summary of Intel's stupidity regarding this issue:
1) "Stolen PCs cannot get on the internet" - I would love to see how they try to implement this.
2) "The plan calls for Intel to put a machine specific ID and a random number generator in every processor" - I doubt that it will be truly random. I bet someone will break the algorithm in less than a year forcing Intel to recall all of their processors. Bwahahahahahahahahahahaha!
3) "But with an electronic ID attached to each processor, consumers will be able to check their processor against Intel's database of products and find out at what speed the processor was sold." - It would be easier if Intel just made software to test this instead.
4) "Intel says they're not keeping a database matching users to their ID numbers" - Then how will they know if it is stolen? I could just call up Intel one day and tell them that was stolen then that will prevent him from getting online
