finding out what is on is not much of a problem if you have an internet connection, you can use this if you are in the states ftp://foobar.resnet.gatech.edu/pub/, this if you are in Germany http://yasd.dhs.org/en
and I just wrote one for if you live in Canada, (no web page yet). I think I will either merge mine with the German one, or roll my own UI. I would like it to be similar to the Guide Plus feature of some RCA TVs. This weekend I will have some time to get some code down for the UI, trying to decide whether or not to use GTK or tcl/tk..

Should we totally alter a foreign planet and bring it away from its natural state?
What is it's natural state? a few billion years ago I'm sure Mars looked quite different than what it does now...then some outside force changed it to look like what it does now. How is what we (earthlings) plan to do any different. Sure we are intelligent beings are would be willfully altering Mars, but we can still be regarded as a force in nature.
I think that things like this are along our evolutionary path, we are like vermin, we have infested earth, and we are now in search for new places to create small nest from which we will infest whole planets.

Is it right or wrong? I don't know, but eventually it will happen. There will be large protests about it the near future, but after a while people will become more accustomed to the idea, and will see the benifits of it and will accept it. We won't see it in our life time, on a large scale at least.

besides, if a LinuxPPC user wants to play an MPEG file, they will most likely hit freshmeat, not /. [1]

which useful ones are you thinking about?
OK, that was a guess on my part...but the thing is that we don't get to see what stories you drop. It would be really nice if there was a "back page" on slashdot..where we could see the stories you drop...not all of them, just the ones that you thought about for second before killing it. We don't have to be able to comment on the stories, just have a link to them. Maybe you guys could create a subset of moderators that would be able to moderate the backpage...and if a story gets moderated up to like 10 or something (a high number) then it gets resubmitted for your approval to get put on the front page.
You guys would still totally control what goes on the front page...and the backpage, but we get to see more of what other slashdotters are interested in. There isn't much room for abuse, since you guys still get to say what goes up on the pages. (loads of people will now complain about why StoryX got onto the backpage, and not the front page, but people will always complain)
    Just an idea.

At the post secondary level, what you have said is definetly correct..we should not be bothered with such mundane details as arithmetic..there are much more interesting problems to be solved.
But at the elementary, and secondary levels students need to get have strong grasp of arithmetic, and basic mathematical functions. From there you can work up and tackle more complex problems.
Look at the way math is generally taught, in calculus you are first taught the First Principle for deriving functions, after you play with that for a while you are taught the short cuts, so you can more easily apply the derivatives to large problems.
thats the way pretty much everything is taught in math, you learn the "hardway" of doing things, and the basics of that type of problem, and after you have a good grasp of how and why it works, then you learn the shortcuts so you can apply what you have just learned to more complex problems, without being bogged down by arithmetic and what not.

What I want to know is if it is uploading as well. I can't find any info about it on their website. I would think that the information it could gather would be quite interesting to the TV networks.
