  1. We will Adapt, like the Borg on Corel Claims That The Worst Is Over · · Score: 4

I've seen replies tout that in order for a company to get into "our" good graces, they will have to run to open source... in my opinion, that is total bullshit. Yes, it has been proven that an "open-source-centric" business model can work. The company that will survive however is the company that can adapt for example:

IBM scrambled to get Windows on their Netfinity servers, for those companies who insist they cant use anything else... but they are investigating, behind the scenes how to have these same servers compatible with other OSes, therefore whenever Microsoft cannot provide that foothold into the market, they get dropped like a hot sack of potatoes (now whether or not Microsoft will get to this point is another discussion).

Apple, in all its wisdom, realized that if they want to give everyone access to that one of a kind user experience they will have to make their major product (the MacOS) more general purpose, so they made the kernal (which has got a lot of people excited) open source, to bring in a fresh perspective. Of course, Steve would run Apple in the ground if Aqua were also totally so!

One thing we have to give Microsoft credit for, is when they realized they were behind, that something explosive was about to hit the scene that they didn't have, they ran to ensure that they would provide it first, regardless of whether or not they would have gotten to that point as soon. They adapted, and the companies that couldn't adapt with them ("ahem! Assume the kiss ass position!") got separated like chaff in the wind and suffered greatly.

Corel still has a few ropes to learn about who and what they want to please as well as how quickly to adapt. Hopefully they are on the right path. There are things I have like about WP that I wouldn't want to go away, but to be improved, it will be interesting if they listen.

Just as we are trying to interpret how far genetic engineering should and should not go, as well has how abortion will affect our society, this whole issue will take a great deal of time. The trickiest part will be "getting people in the know" and having them realize that something must be done to have companies respect our privacy; that's the part that is scary, because history tells us, time and time again that it takes mainstream a long time to realize something is wrong, get out of the mode that its-ok-because-we-make-money-and-the-gov-wouldn't- lie and start taking action.

Guesstimate what? 3 - 5 years? Shit, I may as well move to France! That's another question... will it get to the point where droves of tech people realize that Europe has more stringent policies and start moving and contributing to their technology? Wouldn't that be interesting?

  7. Not Enough on Frankenstein Time · · Score: 1

There are points in our existence when we are no longer innocent, and we realize that the world can be cruel, heartless and unforgiving. It never means that this is how it is for eternity. If we never stop to grasp how our cynicism blinds us, we will be stunted for life. My point is that yes, the human race is not perfect and yes, in trying to be [perfect] we step on, harass and take away the rights of others but there is alway a point where we correct ourselves and put in the proper safeguards, so that future generations will not have to suffer.

When we don't give ourselves "enough credit" for realizing err and correcting our perceptions we create room for paranoia and skepticism, which help hinder progress or new discovery. As with anything new, we need time to analyse it and find out where there is no trampling of rights or other injustices; we aren't a super race so it will take time . We need to stop being quick to judge and ascend to soapbox positions.

  8. Euthenasia on Analysis: The Rise Of Open Media · · Score: 1

The war being waged now is between old and new media. Grandfather media houses are realizing that one day we will decide that euthenasia of the old and static will be best for our evolution in this new, Tech-oriented age(in certain facets of course: why aren't there more encyclopedias or novels || 'classics' online? etc) . Don't get me wrong, although the smell of a new book doesn't get me high, I still would rather having the choice of both having it backed up on DVD and then curl up read the paper version by a cosy fire.

My point is now that we are redefining how we see and use information and how we treat media should evolve from different ideas and considerations than being closed minded to limiting it to how we treat applications, services and software systems.

  10. Finally, another addictee!! on Essential Anime · · Score: 1

I must agree Lain is quiet deep, but I would also suggest:

Rourini Kenshin (95 episodes plus 4 ovas) I believe the ovas come out on DVD in mid July, August.

Basic plot is that of a samuri (at the beginning of the Meji Era) with a dark past who now wants to pay back his debt to society by helping the poor and weak. I found it to be (I watched the episodes first) playful on some levels, but what needed to be said was said artistically and with meaning. (blah, blah, blah). I would highly suggest watching the episodes first because the ovas make a lot more sense.

Since you've also liked Lain, I think you might also want to try (Neo Genesis)Evangelion. It's my understanding that there are 26 episodes and 2 ovas... (I'm trying to work some overtime so I can by them). I have seen Ova 1 (please correct me if I'm mistaken) in DVD on amazon.com I have yet to find the episodes.... I may have missed it. [Yes other people have said]

The company that makes Rourini Kenshin (and I am impressed with their story telling) have a website Sakura Anime they have other titles that they are working on and have completed ... I'm not sure whether or not you can get DVD's yet but I know you can order from them but I would check it out!

Does anybody know if layer 08 - 11 of Lain is actually available?

Haven't they considered that China may just be doing this for show, to get a better foot in on the trade scene? And if this is how its gonna be done, then I agree that Cuba should also get permanent trade status.... (maybe they can start trading Elian's[TM] in larger numbers....).

Come to think of it can't this trade thing be structured on a less permanent basis? i.e.

No that's never ever true, but I'll tell you if you don't already know, there will always be women who care about materialistic things and nothing else and women who care about technical things and women who care about nuturing and women who appreciate all things...and it never ends there because you have women who are all three, et al or a mixture of several other things.

Besides, how can the ChickClickers really be considered geeks? Has there been a modified definition that the rest of us didn't know about? If so, I sure as hell didn't vote. I embrace them as women who appreciate technology, and if this is as far as we (the people in the know) will allow or minds to stretch to imagine a female in the role of a geek then you may as well tell me to may face that I belong in the kitchen so a can put my foot in your [place that really would hurt goes here...]

  19. My Questions on Slashdot Meets The Pinkerton Corp. · · Score: 1

To the Pinkerton group: thank you immensely for taking the time out to listen to the concerns of the community. Hopefully we have brought points forward that will help you to create a better safer program. My questions are:

    1. What was the basis for suggesting or creating an this program, i.e that children can remain anonymous and be "rewarded" for their reports?
    2. Were professionals ever consulted on the impacts on such a program (i.e.) child psychologists, psychiatrists? Were lawyers consulted on whether this program would in any way violate the constituitional rights of these children?
    3. If so what was the response from these experts?
    4. Were children (from differents parts of America, etc) given the chance to air their feelings on what they feel the impact of this program would be in their school?

This in fact would be an important step because if you are trying to do something that will *benefit* them, then it is strongly suggested that their views be considered and factored in to aspects of whatever program is presented.
