I agree. Jackson did a fantastic job of telling the _story_ of LoTR, but he butchered the individual characters. He completely maimed Gimli (and to a lesser extent Legolas).
Still, we shouldn't complain about LoTR and Harry Potter, because it's the best we can get. Never complain about those movies, because remember that they could have been Wing Commander, LXG, Hulk, The Postman, or David Lynch's Dune (not speaking of quality of the films - you may have liked one or more members of that list - but they all totally ignored the source material).
Very few books get the ultra-faithful treatment of Sin City.
Yes... I think part of Ender's success was the fact that the book was very visual. You try to imagine the things going on in the book and it all looks very cool. I tend to think that geeks are very visual learners, so that might be part of why it's such a big hit.
Does sound like they're solving the wrong problem. Keeping an engine cool has got to be easier than figuring out how to coil cooling tubes over a bunch of oddly-sized fidgety humans that have to be able to detatch in an instant and still be fully unencumbered after detatching. Less energy efficient, but much simpler-sounding.
"The best selling PC games are not FPS's" - that's misleading. FPS games might get the bulk of hte market share (dunno, haven't checked) but are not the best sellers simply because there is too many of them for any one to get market share. If Civ IV outsells FEAR, that does not mean that the 4X market is bigger than the FPS market.
Another point is that 200 gigs ain't cheap. I'll bet the lion's share of the $265 they spent went to the chip and drive, leaving the modders with a less-than-exorbitant fee for their work. And there is _no_ appropriate use for the DMCA because the DMCA is an unjust law. The law that should be applied here is copyright infringement - not hacking with the consent of the owner (which is what the DMCA prohibits).
That's enough to go with to seriously confuse ID advocates. Just go through the insane amount of detail, and show how such an event must have been the instantaneous creation of the universe and everything in it. ID is being used for backdoor christianity by biblical literalists, but through ID you can still show how the world is incompatible with biblical literalism. If the world was created 10000 years ago, then there was no Adam and Eve, as there were other people present at the time.
Note: if casual gaming and MMOs are the real breadwinners, than why is the mainstay of PC gaming the multi-million-dollar story-driven FPS game? Why is the industry trapped in an endless cycle of repeating Half-Life?
Whoa. Do these mice they use have hundreds of buttons? Because very few of my favoured games support 1-handed play.
On the other hand, this bodes well for the success of the Revolution. Never thought of that as an advertising feature - you can play while smoking! Somehow I doubt it will be in Nintendo's advertising campaigns.
Even if they're static images, there's a good chance the image will be fake UIs that read something like: "Your computer is broadcasting an IP address. Click here to download the patch".
Actually, there is a social caste system that keeps the Dahlits as an underclass. If universal racism keeps them unemployed and unprotected by the police, I would consider that to be every bit as effective as Stalin's campaign in terms of starving people.
If there is no single business owner who will give you a job, what does it matter whether the government is involved in starving you or not? Either way, society is starving you and you have no escape.
Then go to India to a Dahlit ghetto and tell these people how they don't deserve their potato soup and chair factory job because they haven't worked for it.
Actually since they're constantly adding new content and you're playing on their servers, I think the $15/mo is more than fair. Imagine that you're paying a subscription for a passworded server and buying a small expansion pack every month.
This isn't like UT where a single box can run the whole game. They run more than just a server browser.
But if you really feel that way, Guild Wars is an MMO with no subscription fee. You could try that.
Please tell me that these posters aren't serious. Why don't we just eat their babies? After all, it will let the Indian poor have a means of useful production and keep their population growth down.
Well, like most people the sample size in my class was pretty small. There was one girl who got through it on sheer hard work, a couple who tried to slack through and washed out, one who took an extra year (but pretty much got all her work done by favours) and one very nice hardworking girl who always seemed to be in the best engineering groups... but usually ended up writing the report.
Now that I think about it, the guys weren't much better - we were all pathetic slackers there.
Umm, yeah, but there are also a lot of girls who grow up with baby dolls and have elevated motherhood as their only calling. No interest in any intellectual pursuits at all. They want kids because they grew up wanting kids and prince charming./married to a mathy
That's a good point. Walk into a comp-sci class and ask around. You will be hard pressed to find a single guy who wouldn't like more girls in his class - even ugly ones. The repulsion problems don't seem to start in the working world. In undergrad, most guys are more than cooperative to female classmates. Occaisionally pathetic and creepy, but cooperative.
I think it starts younger. Raise girls to be princesses and moms, and you get women who's highest goals are domestic crap and social climbing.
Buy your girls lego. It can be pink, but it still has to have wheels and jet engines.
Enough that a clever girl can get through a comp eng program without ever having to write a line of code if she plays her cards right - at least at the school I went to.
That's the ultimate fact. Superhigh prices would be bad PR, even after the prices come down. Imho, the ideal approach is to send each store a few standard 360 sets, and a few "Super Ultra Mega Bundle" sets with $1200 of crap in them. Thus, MS doesn't look bad because they never "overpriced the XBox", and they still get to get tons of cash from users. The few unbundled sets are tokens to show that XBoxes were a good price coming out.
From what I understand, that's what retailers did anyways.
Gotta be careful with the G~ suffix approach - as they develop more apps they may run into problems with the various tools within Gnome. I mean, Gmail and Gbrowser is one thing, but what happens when they make a gedit?
I always find the "Nintendo=kiddie" line hilarious. What kind of insecure teenager concerns themselves more over whether a game is "childish" than whether it is fun? I'll be buying a Rev - because I know I'll enjoy it.
You know who I think of when I hear gamers talking about how they won't play Nintendo because it's uncool? The Icy Hot Stuntaz. Insisting that a console where the mainstream games aren't overcomplex baroque titles focussed on blood & tits is dumb is the kiddiest thing of all.
Adult gamers realise that it's really about having a good time.

They're the ones that seem to generate the most hype and flood the shelves of computer stores is all.

Treat it seriously. Consider it. Analyze it in class, with the particular hypothesis that the Earth was created exactly 10000 years ago.
This is exactly why I wish I was a teacher in such an "intelligent design" classroom. I would love to give it exactly the coverage it deserves.
"Nothing for you to see here. Please move along."

Actually, there was a quite good port of it to the old Playstation. It was 2-player co-op on the same screen, which was quite fun on the console.
And Diablo was just NetHack with better graphics.
Dwah? So Bomberman becomes LodeRunner.... and the villains in LodeRunner are other bombermen? WTF?
