    In what we used to call the "free world" you actually needed a reason to deprive someone of their liberty. Now in the "free world?" You can be locked up for anything, anytime at the whim of a politically ambitious prosecutor or a bad tempered cop or both!

    That's why in the USofA we have the largest prison population in the world and the second largest number of executions (after China) and the weight of the "prison-industrial" complex and the "surveillance-society" is helping to choke America to death!

    Most of what the government says, does, etc is nothing more than self serving propaganda, they will seize any opportunity to further expand their power (at the expense of civil liberties) example: 9/11 = "Patriot Act" (we ALL know what an unconstitutional nightmare that is) or how Nixon declared a "War on drugs" and so turned local police departments into occupying armies. The government foments fear among the American people using it's controlled media and using that fear as a tool of coercive mass control makes the people themselves complicit in their own oppression!

    As to "keep old folks in the game" You WILL NOT GET HIRED if you are over 50! Don't challenge me on this, I've lived it, and everybody I know in my age group who has lost their job has experienced the same thing! There are thousands of older engineers, technicians and system administrators who with a little brush-up could be re-integrated into the work force!

    The little twenty five year old HR drones have been instructed to shitcan any resumes that appear to come from older workers and if one slips by then you are told that you're "over qualified".

    The employers want more H1B's cause they work cheap and are afraid to make waves!

    Actually the mass curve is way more abrupt (steep) than you indicate, the power needed to accelerate to relativistic speeds is exponentially greater than your figures suggest.
