It may be the law (as you say, because I don't know) but there is an awful lot of this kind of thing going on, just look up "Desktop Support" on Dice and see some of the outright foolishness being posted as requirements for a job that any nurdy high school kid could do! And that isn't even mentioning the pay. I for one don't even care about the money anymore, I'll take just about anything!
OK, the first person to respond to my posting referred to me as the "parent", makes me think of Crighton yelling at Dargo's son "Who's yo daddy" on Farscape, If I had been there I would have responded "As long as it's not me!".
And yes, I did "forget" that XP has a very crude implimentation of a sorta/kinda muli-desktop thingy but as I tend to avoid the creeping death aka. Windows and want to (quickly) toggle between my 16 desktops with a user-definable set of hotkeys, I use KDE on my FreeBSD machine and my Slackware machine.
And to the cranky kid who corrected my spelling I would like to say Thanks!, you'll make someone a very good secretary!
I use OSS because it's... Free Better Faster More secure Faster bug fixes Fewer bugs (on mature code) More flexable (configurable) No? hidden backdoors (remember the NSA backdoor) Most X window managers support mutipal desktops (Windblows doesn't) You get a REAL command line! And finally, CHOICE!
IBM needs to get some balls and bitch slap these mindnumbed little ratfucks, if you can go after Martha Stewart, Bill Gates and so on then why not McBride? I'd get a real kick oughta him down at Q getting treated like the Bitch he is!
"(which isn't so hot on the I/O front, since it's hampered by the IA32 architecture's crappy I/O design... other architectures don't matter, because Red Hat doesn't support them commercially)"
But IBM does! on the new eServers with the Power4 processor, starting at -6,000.00! (Or if you prefer AIX it's a little more). That's one HELL of a lot of bang for the buck!
When you consider that the conditions needed to create the oil and coal fields were a one time only occurance and will never happen again, isn't it a crying shame to squander these resources on two block trips to the grocery store in a Hummer?
Instead of driving five miles to the park to jog, just walk to the store and back.
My mother used to walk all over Brooklyn pulling a little shopping cart behind her going from store to store buying "whats on sale", she lived to be 75 and was as strong as three cell phone toting yuppies!
I'm going to take the bait! Without flaming or ranting or childishly using foul language!
On my humble P55C233 with 196 Megs of RAM and two 5,000 RPM eide HDD's... FreeBSD 4.4 RELEASE Running SETI@Home CUPS DDclient Samba Fetchmail Sendm ail SSH, etc.
I can copy a 22 Meg tif image from one HD to the other using "cp/opt/pictures/geomp.tif/home/myhome/" it takes 3 mins 36 seconds.
I think you need to look carefully at your configuration and check for rootkits, and hidden processes.
On my wife's machine (A windblows box) I have to run ad aware 6 every other time she uses it!
I interviewed with the kiddies in IT at Gator (for a part time desktop support job), when they all walked in and sat down the first thing the oldest kid "Harry" asked me was "what do you know about Gator", I answered "your're the Spyware people" and at that they all nodded assent. And during the interview they seemed to like the sound of some things, one of them kept asking if I used "CLI's" (command line interfaces) and I kept answering "when needed". They also seemed to be offended when I indicated a preference for Emacs and not VI (I guess REAL men use VI) Between the chewing gum and the ghetto outfits, I gathered that I was probably the oldest person in the building in some time! It was like being trapped in romper room!
I guess I didn't make myself clear enough for an inbred moron to understand, noplace did I mention WEAPONS, just really REALLY dangerous and valuable stuff that can be used for nuclear blackmail or god help me FUEL remember it's more expensive than GOLD and harder to come by.
Don't pay these crooked SCO scumbags ANYTHING! Make them sue you, countersue!
Every Linux enthusiast on the planet should show up on their corporate doorstep one morning and collectivly piss on them and their shitty licensing scheme!
I see a whole 'nuther cottage industry springing up! Yes folks, I'm talking about stealing fissionable materials, yup, why do you think the Japanese want to test this outside of Japan! And that crazy little asshole dictator of north Korea won't have to reprocess old fuel rods anymore, just raid rural Alaska! How about wind power, geothermal, biomass? Oh yeah, that's right, not sexy enough.
All us Geeks afflicted with interminable penury should merge our truly meager resources and nearly infinite technical skills to build a massive supercomputing cluster!
Hell with the unemployment rate at 30% for techies here in Silicon Valley we could use something to do!
IMHO, Solaris is a great product, Solaris on Intel is, for all intents FREE, but it does NOT compete with Linux, it requires much more effort to set up correctly, has far fewer applications available and because it is the domain of a single monolithic corporation it does not have the rapid pace of development of either Linux or the BSD's.
Personally I use Solaris, I also use Linux and FreeBSD, God help me I even use Wingoze, let's not speak ill of any *nix no matter how ridiculous the statements their corporate brass might issue.
Hold on! How many of these Linux "servers" were just workstations sitting in somebody's home on an open DSL or cable connection? Who set them up? little Billy Smith or his big sister? Do the owners of these machines even know that httpd is running? Check out a network segment on say @home or something similar, you know, dynamic end users with somekind of home networking, find out who's got port 80 or 23 open and point your browser at them! Bet you see lot's and lot's of the default It Worked! Apache pages!
Scenario 1 I'm sorry that I can't take care of you right now, I'm up to my elbows in alligators, let me transfer you to my manager, OOPS! hung up by mistake, these darn phones just keep doing that!

I won't Niels you with the details ;-)...

I thought that the government had patented "Red Ink".
When I was a lad we used little sticks to press the wedge shaped marks into the little bits of clay we used!
Ushamartu khed mackht lhab!!
It must've been the drugs.
Sounds like a Windblows user to me!
Keep praying that someday M$ will stop making such garbage that they have to break the law to compete!
IMHO, Linux is to SCO (Openserver or Unixware) what a Stegosaur is to a Velociraptor!
They (SCO) are and have been fossilized and moribund for years now and should quietly go extinct.
This sounds a lot like the same old M$ FUD that crops up from time to time!
What a load of CRAP!

They can go after my bank account, OOps! there's only $80.00 in it!
They can get a wage attachment, OOps! I'm unemployed!
They can put a lien against my car, if they want to push it for me!
Or They can kiss my old unemployed half crippled ass!
