I work for a company that does business with IBM, and IBM demonstrated one of these drives for us. They claim it is rugged, and very stable. Judging that it is IBM, I would have to agree. They are one of the best storage makers in the world. Looks cool, but it could be the deathnell for flash card makers:(
I have been using Red Hat and Suse for about a year now, and neither is buggy. Any of the bugs I have encountered are also found in Suse and sometimes Debian. The stuff Red Hat writes themselves is usually 100%. If not, it gets fixed quickly, and a patch is soon available.
People just dont get it. The only market where NT server dominates is in the Workstation acting like a server market. I know of No one that relies on NT for any SMP tasks. People Use NT as a domain manager for other Windose boxes. It is not, never has been, and probably never will be an enterprise Server like Sun , HP, AIX, and LINUX. People spend too much time reading staged press releases. Win NT is a joke, and people should begin to realize this. IT IS NOT AN ENTERPRISE SERVER, it is a small workgroup domain server. All IT people know this, and all managers should learn this!
Vaxen or Vaxes or whatever, where never popular Unix boxes, they were dedicated VMS boxes. You could run Unix on them, but they were never very popular Unix boxes. Digital Unix didn't really get its start until the Alpha came into the picture. I work with Vaxes and Alphas and we only run VMS on the VAX, never unix.
I am going to stick my neck out on this, but I would argue that pound for pound, there are more apps for Linux than NT. Granted, NT has more commercially known apps on it. However, some of the best cad and graphics programs can run under linux. There are a multitude of Ray tracing, frame editing, and other Graphics utilities that run under linux. On top of that, Linux can cluster a hell of a lot better than NT, which means you can more easily use Linux to ray trace large numbers of frames for large production Movies. This machine will market to the CAD and hollywood industries, where linux already has a strong hold. Linux makes sense for this SGI workstation, and SGI knows it.
True, I do agree that NT has its uses, and does these fairly well. The point I was trying to stress is that it is not an enterprise class server operating system. It is really only an enterprise class desktop PC system. Like you say, it makes a decent file server, and it does have a few other good uses. However, at 1000+ plus support costs and hardware requirements, it is overpriced, and with a little effort, Linux systems can do the same for much less money, and hardware. Linux does have a ways to go before it is as easy to administer, but that time will come, and then NT will have to compete on a different level, one that it does not yet posses.
1. NT is supposedly based on VMS 2. VMS was once poised to threaten Unix, back in the seventies and early eighties 3. VMS outgrew Unix for a short time 4. VMS was proprietary to DEC 5. Win NT is proprietary to MS 6. DEC and VMS are dead 7. History repeats itself:)
I work for a shop that ports VMS apps to Unix and NT, and I can tell you from experience that Unix of any flavor is easier to port to than NT, and much more stable. Many of our customers initially ask for NT ports, and then change their minds when they see the problems involved. The concensous among our customers is that NT can't do the job, and never will.
Win NT is basically Win 9x with a better kernel. The API is very similar. Being this as it is, does any real tech believe that NT is better than UNIX? It is so obvious that NT is little more than a desktop operating system. Sure, managers might love it now, but when it starts costing them more than they had planned, in both downtime and money, they will re-evaluate. The one nice thing about NT, is that it has brought the UNIX market together, and increased efforts to make Unix more usable to the every day user. NT is the disease that wont kill us, but only make us stronger. If it hadn't been for the percieved threat of NT, Unix might be more fragmented than it is today. Thanks billy boy:)
The easiest way to get it on CD

SuSE 6 Released

In order to get SUSE burned on CD, shell out a measily 45 bucks, and buy the CD. Help support the hard work these people have put in for you and I:)
In every group, there will always be those people who go to the extremes. There are just some things that the internet just isn't good for. This is one of those clear examples. Come on guys, we have something that no generation before has had, lets not act like fools with it:)
I dont see a need to distinguish between American and, say, Finish programmers. When you become a programmer, you enter a culture that trancends the globe. You might be a citizen of country X or country Y, but if you program, your culture is one culture. Why do you think Linux is so good, because this culture has come together in one of its first collective, cross national efforts. Linux demonstrates the strength of these ties, despite great distances, and language barriers. Lets face it, when you program, you speak a common language. Granted, you might speak a dilect like C or Fortran, or whatever, but the roots of the language are the same. Programming is the tie that binds:)
In the back of my mind, I worry about all of these different companies putting their hands on Linux. On one end, it is good for us because it increases recognition. On the other hand, it makes me worry that they will all start to seriously meddle with the kernel in such a way as to make each of their linux's different from eachother. Just imagine if HP said, well you can only run HP approved Linux applications on our linux, since it is not fully compatable with the other linux's. Then, what if one of them tries to challange GPL, and make their source secret. What if one or two of these Giants tries to take Linux over, and use their money to bully smaller linux makers out of the market. We must be dillegent to make sure this never happens! Fragmantation and corporate domination is not an option.
I am sorry, but I would much rather support NetBSD or any of the other FREE bsd flavors, than support some new proprietary format. Who was it that said if you dont know unix, you are doomed to reinvent it, poorly. If I can't get to the source, don't bother me with it. Nothing against the hard working developers that brought Be into existance. Hey, I can appreciate their hard work, but why dont you just GPL it. Proprietary, hidden source code is a thing of the past for OS's. If you want to be a player in this erra, show us the code:)
NT wont run on just so little ram, let alone reside on 16 meg of rom, let alone run on those parameters, and still run on a 486. If you have ever tried to run NT on a 486, you would quickly come to realize how slow and inefficient NT is.
While linux may be 'Free' in terms of money, it does demand a certain amount of effort and patience before it will reveal its powers to you. Like any quest for knowledge and power, it is fraught with obstacles and frustrations. However, the adventurer is not alone. With time and effort, you will begin to understand the ways. You will master the powers at hand. There are many people you will encounter on your journey. Some will be helpful, some scornful, some will question your ways. Overall, though, you will find this land full of those that wish to share in the knowledge. If you are true in your desire, you will find the help you need. - Master Switch

Very Funny, So, what is your opinion of the SGI workstation in question?
Relax, don't get so uptight. Its not that big of a deal :)

Thanks !

First they put them in you car, so it wont

get stolen
Then they put them in your dog, so he is easier
to find.....
Then they put them in your computer, so they can
lower cost, and reduce fraud......
Then they will put them in your children, so you
can be secure in knowing your child's whereabouts
.....
Finaly they will put them in you, so you can't
break their laws
