  1. Is that how it works? on The Widening Tech-Savvy Gap · · Score: 2

    If you think that lower costs for companies translate into lower costs for consumers, I have a bridge to sell you. Most markets actually have very little competition in them and prices are fixed so that shareholders and upper management can take away massive profits. Could Microsoft's costs be any lower? Sure, cut their programmer's salaries. Would your copy of XP be cheaper? Nope. Would Bill Gates get richer? Yup.

  3. Keeping the honest people honest on Designing a More User-Friendly DRM · · Score: 2

    I think that OneThumb's point is well made. Most DRM systems are trying so hard to be unbreakable that they become too inconvenient to use. Any scheme can and will be broken, so if you can find the right balance between ease of use and security, then most people will be happy to 'be honest'. It's like video games that require you to insert the original CD, even after you've entered in the license key, etc. I'd bet the majority of "no-cd crack" users are like myself and just hate putting a cd in the drive all the time.

  5. That's ridiculous on Intel C/C++ Compiler Beats GCC · · Score: 2

    If someone needs hyper-optimized code for (intel)x86 only, sure this compiler rocks. It's a big world out there however, and Intel only comprises a small percentage of the microprocessors on this planet. The bottom line is that regardless of performance, gcc is still the most portable compiler anywhere and for a lot of people, this is more important. After all, Microsoft takes advantage of the fact that computers get faster and cheaper and so will gcc. For most situations, you don't need the fastest code because the human interacting with it can't tell the difference. Gcc isn't going away. Visual Studio isn't going away. Chances are, intel's compiler won't be used by anyone outside of very specialized number crunching applications because gcc and VC have long ago reached critical mass on their respective platforms.

    I think you might find RTP would run reasonably well but don't take my word for it. Go to http://qnx.tucows.com/preview/201252.html to download an iso for burning to a CD. If you insert this into the cd drive on an windows box, it will let you make a boot floppy for boxes that won't boot to the CD. Good luck. BTW, you may want to turn of some of the eye candy on the gui (the pointer cam sucks back a few cycles that you can't spare) but I think it might not be too bad.

My Linux gateway is up to 210 days uptime now too...;-)

    All that being said, I don't think it would take that long in the States if the regulators got serious. I only pay $40/month for mine (and that's in Canadian pesos too). I mean, when you can get cable and DSL in Kenora (small town between Thunder Bay and Winnipeg) for crying out loud, I can't see why you Yanks can't get your act together.
