The idea is that there are two "people" that you are typing to. One is a person and one is the AI program. If you can't figure out which is which, it passes.
Eliza, and any other AI bot I've seen, can't pass the most basic test - the surreality test. Past it nonsense or non-sequiters, and it won't know the difference.
The smoking example wasn't supposed to be terrfying... just was the first thing I could think of where a corportation would want to hide their agenda and create a fake grassroots campaign.
And if CmdrTaco were posting under another nick to mock discussion sites, I think it would be an issue.
Actually that is the trend in financial journalism these days. People are mentioning any minor bias they have... Owning the publication is a pretty major bias.
Suppose there was a big rally in Washington to - say - ease up on the tobacco industry. Would there be any difference in your reaction to it, if it turned out a few months later that all of the people there were employees of Phillip Morris?
One comment. It's always dangerous to generalize from the sample size of "my friends." None of my friends have been having problems finding jobs. Does that mean the economy is fine?
I tried using Alice. I logged in as "Zzyzx." Alice asked me if that was from a movie. "No, it's a road in California." "Her" response started, "Why so negative?"
Are we EVER going to move away from Eliza responses?
But I pay $25 for the service myself. The wireless web features don't work without a provider. It's like saying that my cell phone rebate was lame because they needed me to sign up with a cell phone provider.
Yes it sucks you in, but $100 and $25/mth is better than $400 and $25/month.
...on the other hand, it DOES prevent you from using the $10 plan
I bought my Palm VIIx for nearly $400 this year. Comp USA is selling them for $100 now. I'm not bummed about missing out; I'm excited that friends of mine can now have wireless web access too.
That really makes me suspect that it IS true too. I love my palm pilot and wasn't even looking at WinCE devices, but now I wonder if I should have been. Thanks Slashdot for inspiring me to think about giving money to Bill when I get sick of this model.
###I blame the ease of administration in MS products of late for this trend. Someone that doesn't know much beyond their admin tasks can still pass their job requirements and get by in the IT world these days. You won't find those people working on advanced (read: UNIX based) server systems or Cisco/network products, because it involves an inate knowledge and thought processes which only comes (again, IMHO) with years of playing with computer systems (probably teen/pre-teen years) and a desire know how to do something just because, or to see if it can be done. ###
Well in theory, isn't being able to use programs without having to spend years playing with computer systems a good thing?
>>Would you keep pedophiles from being punished to protect children? Would you protect murderers? Britany Spears?
Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. My problem is that I am being told - as an adult - that I can't do a certain act because there are children who aren't mature enough to know the consequences of that act. It's the least common denominator concept of government. If there are some people out there who can't handle something, then NO ONE should be allowed to use it. I object to that line of thinking.
We all knew that the golden age of the late 90's couldn't last. It sure was exciting though. High paying jobs. The chance to be able to retire at 30. Almost anything you would want to know available for free. There's no way it could last, but it was fun while it was there.
I don't know if they have linux drivers, but the
Zefiro ZA2 Sound Card has optical digital ins. Before I discovered the joys of 7x ripping with EAC, I made a few mix cd's using my optical out and my ZA2. You only have to do it once and then it's on your hard drive.
"It's a whole Idea caused by the lack of childrens rights, it starts with children getting no form of representation, Parents should get more votes if they have more children. "
If this happened then children would have even fewer rights. Why? Because parents tend to be overprotective towards their offspring. When I hear about a law passing that might affect childrens' rights, I can look at from the perspective of, "What would I have thought of this when I was that age?" Parents look at it from the perspective of, "How will this affect my children when they are that age?"
Based on the comment, "I'm only a co-op student," I'm guessing you've never experienced a slow economy. Sure right now it's extremely easy for a programmer to find a job. Maybe it will always be easy for the best programmers (and don't be that sure that you're one of them) to find a job. However, as the economy slows, it will become harder for good programmers to find jobs. Enjoy the good times while they're here, but make some plans for bad times. If you live under the assumption of, "Don't try to tell me it's hard to find a new job--it's easy if you don't suck," you might be in for an unpleasant surprise.
That's the best part about this whole thing. It's not just that the monolith is moving, it's that a bored news media in a slow week has nothing better to report than this. Apparently, if you want your cool prank to make the news, do it the week after New Years.

It's revealing your biases. If I work for a company and report about that company, it's only fair that my readers know that I might be biased by that.
Just in the last 12 hours, one person has sent me over 400 copies of this lovely virus. Anyone else just getting attacked?
One comment. It's always dangerous to generalize from the sample size of "my friends." None of my friends have been having problems finding jobs. Does that mean the economy is fine?
And then it got even worse. Next screen:
me: what do you mean, Why so negative
Alice: Zzyzx, "Is that from your favorite movie" What did I mean by it?
Who exactly is going to be fooled by this?
I tried using Alice. I logged in as "Zzyzx." Alice asked me if that was from a movie. "No, it's a road in California." "Her" response started, "Why so negative?"

Why should I have to be punished to protect your children?
As it happens I choose not to do drugs, but if I did choose to smoke, I don't see why my personal choices deserve jail time.

2 gigs of transfer? That's what? 7 cds worth of shn files a month? I go through 3-4 times that most weeks with my cable modem. Thanks anyway.
"We have a couple of students interning here at my $orkplace,..."
How is that pronounced? "Sorkplace?" "the variable 'orkplace?'" "Dollarsignorkplace?"
