it is because "PayPal" as it's talked about in the article is the phenomenon that happened on the internet, failed first ideas just aren't the point here.
you know, we can let some other companies do cool products and money too, we don't necessarly need big monopolistic companies owning everything around here...
You know what, you should hangout on perlmonks.org if you like Perl. Randal Shwartz (Merlyn on PM) and Damian Conway (TheDamian) post there fairly ofthen in reply to various questions.
You can browse their old post, and those of other equally (or nearly) gifted perl programmers.
Perlmonks archive are full of gems. Have a look at it if you've never have:)
You don't understand, the vast majority of people are clueless when it comes to those issues, they can't make the difference between WMA or RAM files, and they are not only controlling their file format: they are controlling the software on your computer, and they could for example cripple another software that can be used to edit those file.
Imagine this: some other company publish a software competing with Microsoft video editing software. Oops, that software get broken by the silent upgrade.
Or this: compuserve decide to go awry on.gif and get in your computer and cripple all the software you could use to view those gifs. Oh, it's their format, right? According to your logic, it is. Well, if you don't like gifs, then don't use it. It just doesn't works...
Unix was the giant RMS aimed to replace. Now GNU is gradually taking the place of the original Unix." So from now on I guess we will have to call it GNU/Unix.
802.11b is pathetically weak. With every new node which uses 802.11b, faulty encryption is becoming
more ingrained in our infrastructure. You can help stop the spread of 802.11b. Demonstrate a well known
attack. Use AirSnort [sourceforge.net], show it to your boss, coworkers, anyone who purchases hardware.
I have demonstrated ethereal to my boss and people who purchases hardware, and they have decided to trash all the hubs and those pesky network cards that are only a mean for crackers to get into computers.
The ethernet protocol is broken, people can actually sniff packets on the network...
I agree with you, but a big advantage of having the application as an applet instead of a standalone jar is that if you release a new version of your software then the upgrade is transparent for the user.
This is a really neat thing, and can save you a lot of support. Of course you could make your standalone app download updated classes... I guess it depends on your needs.
They are _not_ diametrically opposed to each other. Read his answer again, I think it was pretty clear.
And you can't complain that someone is keeping you from doing what you want with the tools you have, if the activity you want to do is illegal. The usual arguments "information wants to be free" or "afther all it's just a buch of 0s and 1s" don't mean anything in the general context.
We had in Canada such a database for a while, but it was destroyed (or so they say) when it came to the public's ears.
This is total privacy invasion, and people should protest against such mesures.
It's a good thing that personnal information on particular individuals is not trivial to get. Still, we all have some nice "primary key" attached to us, like the social security number...
Obviously you don't really need anyone to teach you how to get your company to be seen more, you've just achieved it pretty well by getting on Slashdot's front page.
For those who still haven't got it, just look at this piece of code (in Parrot):
# copy stdin to stdout, except for lines starting with # while left_angle_right_angle:
if dollar_underscore[0] =eq= "#":
continue_next;
}
print dollar_underscore;
}

I guess you would then have a Beowulf Cluster of Natalie Portman... mmm...
He want suggestions, but will never reveal anything usefull or use his discoveries to educate the masses.
Their site looks like it's been designed by a group of kids for a school project.
Liquid is very damn cool though, if you don't mind wasting some cpu cycles for your eye's pleasure :)
sounds great, do you have any pointers for tutorials or good book on the subject of configuring/using/extending emacs?

Anyway I think I'm losing my time to a troll...
of course, if you give them a nice pile of cash.

amen to that.
now this will sure add a new dimension to browsing porn sites...
Whoever moderated that funny doesn't have a heart. The poor guy suffered thru that experience, it's not nice to laugh at his mistakes.

At first though I was a little bit intimidated by Perl, having heard that it was ugly and hard to understand.
It reveals that it isn't, and for a very good book on beginning with Perl one should definetly think about "Learning Perl" from Randall Shwartz.
Very narrative structure, interesting read. That book changed my life ;-)
It may not go in all the little details, but for me it was enough to get me started and start doing nifty things right away.
Sam Lantinga answered that question in this post.)
