This is why I loved Ultima Online so much, and refuse to play any MMORPG since UO. UO gave the player so much freedom, including being able to mark rune stones (I think that is what they were called) at any point in the world. You could then cast the recall spell on the stone and you would appear back in the same spot where you put the mark on the stone. In the early days, this caused some hilarious problems, whereas a player would mark a rune stone on a open field, someone would build a house on it, and then you could recall into their house and steal their stuff. LOLZ.
But this teleportation made the game so much more fun. If a friend signed on and was somewhere in the World and wanted to party up with you, you probably had a stone for near the location where he was at, or if he was a higher level mage, could open a portal for you. Also, if you go out and explore and find a really cool thing (such as when you could buy a boat and sail the high seas and find an island) -- you could mark it and return there later, without having to go through the whole ridiculousness of the said journey again that is no longer fun (why do you think console RPG's lose MAJOR points on backtracking)? That said, there is something cool about not being able to easily get back to a really rare but cool place, but there has to be a balance.
One thing I find lacking in modern MMO's in the realistic representation of death. UO actually allowed you to kill people, and loot their corpse. None of this , you die but magically keep all your stuff. That is so lame. Just my opinion, but I cannot stand WOW. To me its so watered down and lame (no offense to WOW players). I would just love to see another UO type RPG. I am surprised no one has made one.
I felt this way too. I work from home where I am a 1/4 owner of a company and I am the sole tech/developer. Sometimes I feel overwhelmed at the sheer volume of work that has to be done. But I have found the following helps:
1. Stick to a schedule. Wake up at the same time, eat breakfast, have workout sessions and breaks planned. Have a list of things to do on your break (walk to the park down the road, play some basketball, etc). Trust me, structure helps, and will stop you from wasting time surfing the web or lounging around.
2. Have weights in your house. I use kettlebells and dumbbells and I have a small bunch. Walmart had a dumbbell weight set for like $30! You can pick up used kettlebells at Play it Again Sports. In addition to using them to workout, use them when you take a break. Get up off your arse, go, and pick a light weight. Do 3 or 5 sets of 20 (light weight). Feel the blood rush to your muscles. Feel your brain releasing positive chemicals into your body. You will get a natural high. Its important to release from work. Work will come up while you are working out. Use the energy in the lifting to push the negativity away. By the time you are done, and go back to the PC, you will see you problems in a different light and get several "ah ha!" moments. Trust me this works INCREDIBLY. You need an active body to carry an active mind. If one is out of sync, the other is. This is sooo important!!
3. Never work more than 90 minutes without taking a break. I am serious. Unless you want to crash on your couch at the end of your day in fetal position, unable to move, you need to do this.
4. Replenish your energy stores. This goes back to taking breaks, but is much more greater than that. Humans have infinite amounts of energy, we will really do, but we need to replenish it. When you work, you burn all that energy. You must walk away from the computer and do something fulfilling that give you energy. Do you have a non-work related hobby... Yoga, Meditation, Gardening? These things will replenish your energy.
5. Don't over utilize or under utilize yourself. Everyone knows the dangers of overworking, but not under working. Under working can lead exactly to a feeling of dis-attachment. You need to have a middle ground, so you always stay actively engaged.
6. Organize your tasks. You do not have to get fancy! Just write them down in notepad, and put them in blocks of time. Say, Tuesday, these tasks will get done. Wednesday, these tasks, etc.
7. Create a nice happy environment. You must be happy and engaged to work. So have your favorite TV show reruns playing in the background, or put on some music. Open the windows. Relax. Look at each task on your notepad doc and as you complete each one, cross it out, take a break, then come back and look at your notepad doc again. Realize you just completed something, took a renewing break, and now your happy and ready to tackle the next one.
6. You need to stay fully engaged in your work. To do so, take the suggestions above. I just picked up the book The Power of Full Engagement after a friend recommended it to me because I was having similar problems. http://www.amazon.com/Power-Full-Engagement-Managing-Performance/dp/0743226747. This book is worth it, trust me. The key to success in business or life is not time management, but energy management.

I don't believe your car analogy is 100% correct, at least with most states. You are free to buy a car wherever you like and you only pay tax to one state. When I lived in NJ, and bought my car from a PA dealership (closest Honda dealership) with good prices.
I only paid taxes, I think to PA, and then I got my car registered in NJ.
NJ might have gotten something from it (doubt it thought) but I only paid taxes once.
There are laws against double taxation.
This why many people go to Delaware to buy big ticket items to avoid sales tax. Delaware does it on purpose so people from other states go their to prop up their economy, since their state is so small...
I did some researching back awhile ago when I was deciding on a projector or HDTV. I went with the projector (quality isn't as good but nothing compares to the theater experience you get), but one of the things I read was that newer plasma TV's don't have the problem of burn-in anymore, it only affects older models.
I have always been interested in the same thing. The problem I have always encountered is that you would want this thing to fly on its own, to other states, territories, etc, maybe with a camera. Ideally you would be able to go to your PC, bring up an app, and see (out of the cameras on your UAV) where it is (flying over a beautiful mountain peak, etc). You would also want to be able to send to it new coordinates.
But how do you keep in communication with it? Military UAV's most definitely use satellites. Without the use of satellites, I find it hard for a UAV you build to go beyond your own visual range (= ~10 miles) from the launch site.
Does anyone have any solutions for this, or does one have to rent time/frequency sharing with a satellite provider (read:expensive)?
I think you missed the point of doing a reboot, it's an Alternate Universe silly, meaning no events have to be congruent to the rest of the series nor does the lore have to be present:
**EXTREME SPOILER ALERT**
J.J. Abrams made it clear as possible, I think to sooth Star Trek fans... because he intends to bring back Trek. It is clearly stated in movie that this is an Alternate Universe, because the antagonist going back through time with Spock and destroying Vulcan changed history.
In the conversation between Kirk and Elder Spock, they clearly say that this is not the way things should have unfolded, Kirk says something like, "What, like an alternate universe" and Spock says "Yes, an alternate universe" ***END SPOILER***
For all those people complaining about PHP 4/5 issues.. really?, REALLY!? Not to sound like a troll here, and KARMA aside, but cmon. There are not that many changes at all that can't be fixed even on huge applications.
Haven't any of you people heard of php_compat? Simply install PHP_Compat library from pear:
#pear install php_compat
downloading PHP_Compat-1.5.0.tgz...
Starting to download PHP_Compat-1.5.0.tgz (44,133 bytes) ............done: 44,133 bytes
install ok: channel://pear.php.net/PHP_Compat-1.5.0
Then in PHP
require_once 'PHP/Compat.php';
PHP_Compat::loadFunction('file_get_contents');
Since I just got done watching all 5 seasons of Enterprise (hey, I slept with a real girl two weeks ago.. really.. OK!), I think I can clarify this the best.
Dr. Soong, the one we know from TNG who created Data has great grandfather, also named Dr. Soong (and played by Brent Spiner). During the time of Enterprise he was a criminal for conducting genetic engineering experiments after they were outlawed following Earth's 3rd World War. He continued the work of creating genetic super humans, raising them on a far planet until he was finally captured and imprisoned back on earth.
One day the super humans, fatherless, decided to leave their planet and hijacked a Klingon Warship, beating the Klingon's in hand to hand combat and sending them out the airlocks. This infuriated the Klingon Empire and almost cost war between them and Earth (no Federation yet) but was defused by Captain Archer of the current Enterprise. However, the Klingon's were extremely dishonored to have human's beat them -- and feared the federation would have Super Humans on all Star Ships, which would spell the end of the Klingon Empire.
The Klingon's stole some of the genetic material from the original hijacked ship (after it was destroyed by Enterprise some containers escaped unscathed that had embryo's the Super Human's were carrying) and started to create Super Klingon's. However, they couldn't separate the Human DNA. Any Klingon made "Super" lost their ridges and other distinctive "Klingon Features".
To make matters worse, a virus infected the Supers and spread to normal Klingon's infecting a good amount of the empire. The virus carried genetic material, which supplanted this human DNA into regular Klingon's. The Klingon's were going to destroy every planet with the disease until the captured Enterprise Doctor, Flox, came up with a cure to the virus -- at gunpoint of one of the factions of Klingons.
In the end, the Klingon's stopped destroying infected worlds because the infection had been neutralized, but a large number of Klingon's were now Human/Klingon hybrids.
That was done in Enterprise to explain the Human looking Klingons in the TOS.
With the PS3 price cut looming, wouldn't it make sense to buy like 6 of those guys and Beowolf them? You can then rent out your computer to corporations and make back your investment ten-fold.
I don't understand why we still use CAPTCHA's or Kitty tests. I have been using a method on my service providing site for the past 5 years that fools any bot.
I simply state "Are you Human" yes/no.
You wouldn't believe the amount of success I have since I took down the earlier CAPTCHA technology I was using.
Almost immediately, the amount of customer emails I get daily increased 453%! Many of these customers were offering me things, such as money or drugs! I was also able to buy Viagra at near wholesale prices (and then turn them for a profit on my business trips to Florida).
My traffic has increased too! The amount of people using my free service almost took down my servers. I had to get 3 more! Of course, I am now operating at a loss, but I sleep well knowing that I made a difference in the world by letting so many people access my great service.
If anyone wants the "are you human" technology from me, I will give it away for free! Just email me.
Thanks!
If you sign up as a developer with Google ($25), you can get a SIM and bootloader unlocked G1 phone for $399.
So for $415 plus free shipping (whoa, thanks Google) you can get your GPhone that you can do anythign with, flash, install any unsigned app.
WHY are we still messing around with the IPhone. Lets pull together and make the G1 a success.
As a side note I heard the G1 is a little slow, but HTC is coming out with newer hardware this June for the next revision of the Google Phone.
Not sure if they will offer this newer hardware as part of the developer program though...

This is why I loved Ultima Online so much, and refuse to play any MMORPG since UO. So I buy this card with the hope my dream will finally come true...
Two G200-350-B3 graphics processors... (AWESOME)
240 shader processors enabled... (HELLS YEAH!)
512-bit GDDR3 and 4 GB of total memory... (I JUST WET MYSELF)
I put in Crysis , max out the settings, and play the game...
*Ahh just a bit Choppy*...
*Oh no, not the "Lag o' Death"*...
*Shit, now it's Freezing*...

Yes, even the best graphics card mankind has ever made can't compete to the horrible coding of Crysis!
