    Assuming this lone gunmen actually has more insight than the rest of the establishment--possible
    but not frickin' likely since he mistakenly believes that cooler local temperatures (CA cold snap)
    are in conflict with our notions of global warming--this single aspect is not really enough to go
    once way or another. There are still a number of variables in current climate models with unclear
    implications i.e; aerosols. This is one of the reasons that you get "wide" ranges of possible average
    global temperature increases. Maybe the cosmos really is cooking us, but then its also possible
    that global dimming offset that.

    There are no more internment camps, slavery or segragation. Mistakes do not go
    on and on. Also note that warrantless wiretaps and searches are being done by
    the same people espouse the One True ID. Sure, market failures can be corrected,
    but by whom? Why the government of course; else they would not be failures in
    the first place.

    a) No, not exactly. Driving is a right granted by the state.

    b) You only need a driver's license for a delivery or livery job.
          Other employers may require some mform of identification, but
          it need not be a license.

          Correct, you could present a state ID, passport, or other acceptable
          document (generally government issued).

    Re: Bloggit, that's not exactly true. I dislike Office period, and MS and Mac equally.
    Yet, it is frustrating as fuck to try and use Office X and have all the keyboard
    accelerators "broken". Control-b is bold damnit! I don't care if MS "thought" of that
    or Lotus did, it's an obvious shortcut and dagnabbit everybody/thing else gets it right.
    There are some things you just don't fuck with, and redefining basic things like that or
    home/end is like changing somebody's keymap from QWERTY to AZERTY (it's mighty similar
    most of the time, but different enough to wreak havoc).

    Umm reread what the GP said. Sounds to me like that's what they're doing, but...
    When they tweak the world users have to download any corresponding sounds,
    maps, artwork, etc.

    I never said it was the most efficient mechanism. However, transit (that includes
    shipping goods) and residences each account for about 1/3 of american energy use;
    ~30 and 40 quads respectively. Personal vehicles make up about 1/2 of the transit
    energy consumed, and that again is 50/50: cars and pickups+SUVs. Roughly 5 quads of
    residential energy use is electrical. I don't know how much of that is lighting but
    that along with heating and refrigeration are traditionally its major uses in the
    home. Also, in commercial buildings lighting is about 40% of energy use IIRC. AFAIK
    no cars (excluding electric, and they indirectly) are running around powered by coal.
    Finally, consider that there is far less tied up in light bulbs than cars and trucks.

    All numbers (except for commercial lighting) are cribbed and rounded from
    "Sustainable Energy: Choosing Among Options," Peter, Drake, Driscoll, Golay and
    Tester (2004).

    Is is short-sighted/ill-conceived? Sure. But you're also misinformed,
    CA has the highest number of hybrids per capita. Are there wanna-be
    cowboys driving inappropriate vehicles? Sure, but you've got them in
    almost any state of the Union.

    Buy the right bulb, they aren't all shaped the same.

    a) the roughly bulb shaped spirals usually work best for tight spaces
    b) pay attention to the size of the base/ballast, some (older) ones are *huge*
    c) don't get an overly high rated bulb as they are larger, 8 or 13W is usually good.

    There are CFLs with "bulb"-shaped shells, of course you lose some light.
    LED fixtures also work well/better for the refrigerator situation; instant-on.
    Hg is a valid point though, if they insist on this instead of proper subsidy/tax
    and education, then they need to be sure to adequate education and facilities
    are available for recycling of CFLs. Not only do they contain (trace) Hg, but
    quite a bit more high-grade materials than incandescents (which should be
    recycled too, though the W is probably "lost").

    But you don't have to close everything off all at once, it should also be rather
    obvious from the fact that so many of them were *not* on bridges but instead
    high on building signage, that they were not a threat and *intended to be seen*.

    What if the daughter I don't have was on a hypothetical bus near one? Well, that
    would certainly be unfortunate, but shit happens. Or in this case it didn't.
    What if you had a heart attack and the ambulance couldn't get to you because the
    roads were blocked off? Or an elementary school caught fire? All of the recent
    over-hyped "potential terrorist" incidents pose truly negligible risks and do not
    warrant the attention paid them.

    Heat lamps? Some deal. Sure they're technically incandescent, but not designed to
    produce visible light. Of course, as others have mentioned, they ought to tax the
    bulbs (or energy use) instead of this half-assed approach whch will lead to cold fries.

    deal about the others (though still check them). Sure they were on bridges, but they
    were also on used record stores, Blockbusters, etc. etc. Them be some prime targets...

    Maybe you had some magical version, or I did, but I was always required to install 98
    first. In any event, there's little difference between having old media vs. having an
    old install other than an half-hour and a data back-up.

    Obviously drag et al. complicate things, but kinetic energy is a decent first order approximation.

    Everyone bitching about states rights, privacy and freedom could give
    a flying fuck about these documents which are already on record (though
    birth certificates are generally held at the county, but required for SSN)
