In the UK an 'asshat application' can always be defeated by the 'chewbacca defence'. And with no come-backs. The beauty of case law and an unwritten constitution...
The one I dealt with was just some fat-handed whore of a man that couldn't accept he was just plain *wrong*.
Whenever he didn't get the answer he was looking for he would change solicitors. Unfortunately this was all at the tax payers expense as he had free public funding.
The last time I checked he was on his 8th set of solicitors although that was some time ago so he is probably in double figures by now. Death would become him (harsh but in my mind, fair).
In the UK the courts can declare somebody a vexatious litigant which requires them to apply to the court for leave to make an application to the court. Is there something similar in the US?
And for the inevitable posts that berate the UK and make reference to CCTV, libel law etc. etc., the list of vexatious litigants is quite small and made up of people entirely like Mr Thompson who are, "batshit fucking insane". I know because I had to deal with one of the people on the list - a full weight cock-jockey of the first order. That list of people could bring any country to its knees.
I work in the legal profession and my ex boss acted for a pair of rogue plumbers who used to get calls for blocked piped and charge thousands to dig up the garden due to 'root ingress' in submerged outlet piping. They knew all the tricks and were guilty as sin.
Imagine if you were a vulnerable elderly person with water flooding into your house and a couple of 'friendly' plumbers tell you they can stop the flood or leave you to it. There doesn't seem to be much of a choice does there?
It's all very well making swathing disingenuous comments about lawyers but there is a high bar (no pun intended) to cross before you can hold yourself out as a lawyer and being an officer of the court is a position that most take seriously.
As for the plumbers, they were ordered to pay damages. Why did my boss act for them? Because they said they were innocent which is reason enough to accept and act upon the instructions. If lawyers pre-judge it interferes with the right to a defence which is not something any sane person would accept.
I agree that it seems like double remuneration but the guy said he was underpaid.
Does anybody object to the tips that waitresses get in a diner? These are supposed to reflect the service provided and provide the funds that minimum wage does not whereas JWSmythe accepts the service charge in advance rather than retrospectively.
Having said that my own personal preference is for a IT dept to act professionally but putting shooting targets on the wall and acting like an ass sounds like the sort of behaviour that might lead to your job being outsourced. Once bitten, twice shy eh?
They should have a DVD from each region, broadcast them simultaneously and watch only the screen that is showing the region version that corresponds with the region that they are currently over.
Of course, if the law states that 'playing' rather than 'watching' a disc outside of its operable region then it is a simple case of playing and stopping the DVDs in turn. This may cause some difficulty (disc startup lag, repeating the same part of the DVD many times as fast forwarding would be too slow etc) but it is much better than your feeble 'swap the disc' solution.
Anyhow, is this argument relating to DMCA? If there are a whole bunch of region 1 discs and the DVD player is set to region 1 it doesn't matter where they are played does it? No contravention of the DMCA, no law to answer to and no story other than the parent story of not having the correct software which to a stripped down bespoke laptop is wholly uncontroversial as more bloat equals more chance of instability.
I resisted getting an ipod as I didn't like the look or feel of itunes but now I have an ipod and use itunes on my PC I honestly can't think of how the system can be improved. Moreover, I don't use full functionality as I have never made a purchase from the itunes store - mostly as I rip my own content from CDs and DVDs.
The ability to synch with podcasts it the abilty I cherish the most. And most of the podcasts are properly free.
To anticipate any accusations of being any type of fanboy I will 'come out' and say that I only ever use Windows, I have never used a mac, I am underwhelmed by Linux, I prefer the 360 over the PS3 but value my chipped XBMC-equipped Xbox1 over the 360 and PS3 as it is my media hub.

He makes a good argument and hasn't even *mentioned* Jack Bauer..
At least we in the UK can see where our taxes are being spent - you know, with all the CCTV ;-)

That's a ridiculous idea.

Damn that's a fine response.
