Many animals have been known to get drunk. I once saw a nature special where a lot of African animals ate the fruit off a grove of trees and all got drunk. After this happened most of them passed out next to each other. So there was an awesome site of monkeys, zebras and lions all sleeping a few feet away from each other.
I think what the article is pointing out is that our ability to process more alcohol allowed us to eat more fruit without getting drunk, which allowed us to be more mobile and defend territory better while not getting drunk. It also probably helped us defend ourselves better against predators, than those that were drunk.
Every coder I've ever met has a black-and-white worldview
Hasn't the US Congress by folks with a black and white view for the past 4 years? It just happens that the folks in one part see black and the other see white. And neither will work together, because that would disrupt their worldview.
I remember when I was a kid they predicted a cure for diabetes at about 5 years. This was 30 years ago, at least. As the years roll by I hate to sound like a conspiracy theorist but I don't believe they are looking for a cure. But are instead looking for other ways to treat it. There simply is no long term profits in a cure, but treatments are a different story. They can come up with new treatments every day.
While I understand the feeling, I think there are plenty of decent scientists out there with a personal stake in finding a cure. Also, while this may hold true for drug companies, pharmacies and some doctors, the insurance companies would rather that everyone was cured. So while there are profits in treatment, there is also profit in a cure as well.
Recently a Harvard doctor said he was able to get stem cells to turn into Beta Cells. http://hsci.harvard.edu/news/stem-cells-billions-human-insulin-producing-cells
Maybe with this and the verapamil the body won't attack the Beta Cells...
As a type 1 for a decade I understand the skepticism, but they seem to be closer these days. Also I would love to just take pills everyday for this rather than insulin injections and constant blood sugar monitoring.
The article states that it is for type 1 diabetes.
Instead it is meant to lessen the amount of TXNIP to prevent the immune system from destroying beta cells. And it is only being given to folks who were recently diagnosed (last 3 months)?
I think the title of this is all wrong, maybe I am misreading this, but it seems like it is meant to prevent body from destroying the few beta cells that are left. How can this cure diabetes? Is this treatment anything that can be used in folks (like myself) that have had type 1 for a while?
The articles don't really answer these questions but seem to claim that it can cure diabetes, does anyone know the answers to these?
One of the biggest issues is going to be insurance and who will pay when one of these cars causes an accident.
While most bugs will have been worked out, there will still be a situation where one of these cars is going to cause an accident. And I have not heard anyone talk about who will pay when this occurs.
I currently have the CGM and I understand some of what you are saying but I believe things have improved a lot since then. Currently my CGM gives me a calibration within about 10-15% of my blood glucose. This is normally good enough to monitor trends and keep my blood glucose in the proper range without finger pricks. The one huge advantage of it is the fact that when I am hungry I can look at it and see if I am hungry because of low blood sugar or just being hungry.
About your complaints with the CGM, I have seen numbers jump to be about a 100 point difference, but this is normally followed by a calibration failure. This causes me to have to recheck my blood glucose (I agree this is annoying, but at least it recognizes it is off). Currently the sensor lasts 6 days (I can normally get it to go a 7th day before the battery dies). I still normally test my blood glucose 3-4 times a day, but that is better than my previous 8-12 times a day.
I think I do better with the CGM, but then again I am just happy not to have to go back to using constant needle injections and finger pricks.
So what if someone else in the car is looking at the directions while you are driving? Will their ability to look at directions be significantly hampered?
It is a good thing that these Congress people don't have any important things to worry about so they can focus on this ridiculous crap.
In the mean time my car might just drive on an interstate with failing bridges, or into a tunnel with ceiling tiles that could fall at any moment, but focusing on this is obviously the best thing for Congress to do.
I completely agree. The problem is Type 1 is such a small section of diabetics (about 5% at the moment) that most people don't even think of this, and when you tell someone you are diabetic they automatically assume it is Type 2. If they actually put the time and effort into finding a cure for this it would probably cure or at least lead to better treatments for Type 2 as well, but that might actually cost drug companies money in the long run.
As it should be. You have no right to hack systems that don't belong to you unless you are asked to do so by the owner.
And what happens if that system has some of your personal information from a previous order or interaction?
I guess we should just throw all of these "security researchers" in jail and anytime an internet vulnerability is announced everyone should just get new logins, new credit cards and just reinvent themselves online. That sounds like the best plan.
Space-X has done a bunch of docking with the international space station already, if they have a rocket capable of transporting people to the space station, this will be huge for them.

This moat needs sharks with lasers attached to their heads!!

All the "real programmers" do.
We all know that the color of the sky is: #87ceeb

I suggest me for that one male. The rest of the crew should be female....
I wish to offer my services to our new spidergoat overlords.
In order to eliminate the trademark infringement the team should just change their mascot to be a redskin potato.
(I stole this from elsewhere but I thought it was funny)

You can be positive that K Street and its myriad of lobbying firms will be more than happy to employ him.
This is if he doesn't get a job offer at Fox News first.

At least my "Snarky Internet Forum Post" Copyright will still hold up in a few places.
Or if he had gotten pulled over for speeding (or some other minor traffic violation) and the officer smelled the marijuana.
And I am sure that that some tax breaks or subsidies helped them get their grid up to begin with.
There is also the age of the solar system to worry about. If it is in its early years there could be constant planetary bombardment going on.
If it is in its later life the planet's core could have shut down, leaving no shield.
I believe this planet will be like Venus, a rocky surface, but a CO2 atmosphere that makes it at least 300 degrees Celsius on the surface.
If they made 1000 of them initially, why not take them to a trade show and see what kind of reaction that they got.
Instead they threw out 800 of these units and removed it from their memories.
If an anti-science President gets elected in 2016, will the world refuse to stop working with the USA? If they did, wouldn't we be upset?
Most of the world didn't care that much about our previous president...

A Sith wants to take over a small country, it doesn't seem to be an issue in my head.
It isn't like there is a power-hungry "politician" nearby who controls vast areas like an emperor.
Wait a second... Putin is the Sith Lord, Vader is his apprentice.
We need this Vader to destroy the emperor! He is the only one who can restore balance force!!!
