Bad analogy. Sure if the company that makes your toaster goes out of business there may be nobody to honor your warranty, but your toaster doesn't spontaneously explode the day the toaster company goes out of business. Nor does it take your microwave, fridge and blender with it.

No, it's not legal (DMCA) and I shouldn't have to go downloading cracks from questionable sources to play games I paid for. I don't expect Ford to tell my I need to hot-wire my car if I want to continue driving it (except I assume hot-wiring your own car is legal).

Regarding the DRM, seeing as the publisher can just release a non-Steam patch any time it wants,

If they want. Which is a pretty big if. And if they still exist, which is also a pretty big if.

Although they are doing it for all the wrong reasons, I applaud any effort to stop this Steam juggernaut from becoming the de facto DRM monopoly and the single point-of-failure for entire game collections. It's just not healthy.

One day Steam will go dark, and then you won't be able to reinstall any of those games.

Footnote: "blah, blah, blah,...but they said they'd release a patch....blah, blah, blah". Please show me the legally binding clause in the Steam TOS that guarantees that.

I won't buy Steam delivered games or games that use Steam for DRM (looking at you Civilization V, FO:NV and the lastest Total War games - all series I previously supported). It worries me deeply that the industry seems to have dumped all their eggs in the Steam basket without any concern for the hulking monopoly they are creating.

I was in the same boat. I got FO3 just after release, played the hell out of it, but wasn't going to spring for the DLC because of the stupid requirement that you buy it with Microsoft points. Then last week I picked up the GOTY edition from Amazon for about $30. It grinds my gears to buy the same game twice, so I'm trying to convince myself that I've picked up all the DLC for $30 instead of $50.

Just started a whole new game of FO3 because I hadn't played for months, didn't want to try and pick up where my last character left off and thought it would be easier to start over. Having a blast, but haven't started any of the DLC yet because I need to build my character up a bit first.

Still can't bring myself to blowing up Megaton.

This is how I understand it from discussions on the news this morning. I think the employee in question was protected because after bitching about her work, several co-workers chimed in with their opinions. That made it a collaborative discussion about working conditions and protected.

Try explaining to the person who thinks you are their exclusive lover that you are aren't going to spend Valentine's with them. Christmas is easier because you can always use your family as an excuse.

Nonsense, it's exactly because you don't vote that the crazies on the fringe end up getting elected. It's not voting that hands all the power to the special interests. Politicians have to appeal to those that actually DO vote and the reason you don't like the candidates is exactly because you DON'T vote. They don't care what you think. They care about unions who can deliver votes and corporations who can provide money for campaigns.

The absolute worse thing you can do for your country is not voting. If you don't like the candidates then you should have got involved earlier. Did you vote in any primaries? No? Then who's to blame for two crappy candidates?

This whole "they're all the same" or "they all lie" bullshit is the weakest and most pathetically lazy excuse for not doing your civic duty. "They're all the same" so now I don't have to think about the issues or pay attention.
