Why is OpenSuSE not Linux? In general it is less buggy than Ubuntu. Ubuntu is the mother of all buggy distros. I'm not looking for an argument because I have too much proof to be able to lose my argument. OpenSuSE has one of the best KDE4 implementations there is (perhaps second only to KDEmod in Arch Linux) so the poor KDE integration is not their fault; they have done everything possible on thier end. Google was silly to use GTK, I really can't think of any reason why they used GTK besides "Ubuntu uses Gnome".
incompatibility with KDE is kinda a good thing.
1995 called and left a message: "KDE is now free software". Funnily enough KDE is not much less popular than Gnome which I suspect is largely to do with Ubuntu's popularity. I don't know what would inspire you to suggest that not having compatibility is a good thing. Maybe you should consider a career with Microsoft.
Full Disclosure: I am a Fedora fan, not an OpenSuSE fan.
I totally agree that tablets are not all they are cracked up to be (Keyboards ftw!) but in the context of the OLPC they make the most sense. They have the less parts/meterials and you have to remember that the OLPC computers are not used like standard laptops and are made to provide computing to people with minimal education and encourage interaction between the youngsters.
They make music, draw and play games more than word processing in a very hands on fashion. Tablets are also very much like a book - they can be easily passed around amongst a group of kids - which amongst the targeted cultures is very common, they share everything because they very aware of family and community.
The plural of LEGO is would seem to be just "LEGO" but it actually isn't - it has no plural. In proper English (not American) you have to say "LEGO pieces" or something similar.
"LEGOs" makes me want to gouge your eyes out.
The new SmartQ tablets are much cheaper and they allow you to do pretty much whatever you want. You can see them at http://www.dealextreme.com/search.dx/search.SmartQ and those prices include free postage.
The new v7 7" (and v5 5", which I haven't seen on anywhere yet but they have made them) even have HDMI and 1080p playback. By default they triple boot WinCE, Ubuntu (you can install Mer) and Android.
If you decide to not wait a month or two and yet an older version make sure you upgrade the firmware as the media performance of the 1.0 firmware sucks.
The SmartQ tablets don't come with a massive amount of storage space but just add your own, its much cheaper.
Low power consumption and HD video processing on the CPU.The new cortex A9s look pretty awesome.
It's not just the CPU, but the other parts that go with it. On many Atom motherboards the north bridge consumes more power than the processor!
If this was ARM based, I would probably jump on it (and it would probably be a little cheaper) but it is just the standard netbook with a fancy interface. There is plenty of fancy interfaces around so I don't know how this Litl plans to compete.
There is a lack of good ARM based netbooks! Always Innovating has the only half decent one.
I am all for web based, but you need to use Mozilla Prism, not Firefox. http://prism.mozilla.com/
Firefox is too easy for some clever punk to trick into closing down or to install plugins into though it probably does have a Kiosk mode switch but I am too lazy to Google that.
Ubuntu has THE WORST KDE implementation around. It's because of Ubuntu's silly patches to KDE which provide no actual benefit besides providing a Windows(tm) style experience complete with constant lagging and crashing. Any other distro is better for KDE (amongst other things).
A few weeks back I purchased a VPS server for the purpose of watching Hulu. I tunneled all my traffic by using SOCKS and many services clearly thought I was in the USA except Hulu.
Hulu seems to be doing client side checks, checking your Locale/time settings I suspect.
I am in Brisbane, QLD, Australia and I belive my VPS was in a Houston datacenter in Texas USA.
Citation needed.
What "features" would XP have compared to Ubuntu with Gnome, XFCE, KDE or even LXDE default installs?
I run my virtual servers with 192MB of RAM and during normal operation they seem to only use 64MB or less when running a LAMP stack with just a blog.
X Servers and userland applications are bloated, not Linux.
I think part of the reason this vulnerability still exists in the wild is because of the appliance style deployment of Asterisk implementations. I believe the term is "Once you have MythTV set up DO NOT FIDDLE WITH IT!!!". Oops, I meant Asterisk not MythTV. Same difference.
Not fiddling often involves not updating.
I noticed the same thing! I wonder if Google can confirm that it really is good money... +1 to tomstorey
You would have competition from older established barbers though. People go out of their way to go to the barber that they know and trust best.
Perhaps with the change of model it means that people outside the USA could use Hulu? If the subscription is cheap enough they could make a lot of money from non-US viewers. I might be totally mis-understanding the whole reason we cannot legally watch Hulu though.
I totally agree with your opinion on Python - and the code should be readable or else it kind of defeats the purpose of saying "anybody can review it". That and Python generally shits all over Ruby in pretty much every way.
But I suspect Linux was chosen for a few reasons - firstly it was probably what the creators of this project knew best and secondly it has better hardware compatibility and more consultants/contractors readily available to deal with Linux. If you know nothing about an OS it is hard to configure it to be secure (but Windows just fails no-matter how well you know it).
Just my two cents.

I think this solution has found its' problem.
We could do with a few more extinct animals...
The mere word. Nothing more, nothing less.

Yes, but from $150 to $270 you do not lose out on nearly as much as you do on an Archos. The capabilities are not much different.

So these Chinese farmers can use Linux... but can their grandmothers?
