Here's from inetd man page on my RedHat 5.2 server.
"The optional ``max'' suffix (separated from `wait'' or ``nowait'' by a dot) specifies the maximum number of server instances that may be spawned from inetd within an interval of 60 seconds. When omitted, ``max'' defaults to 40."
With a max of 4096 processes, ( I am using a 2.2.x kernel ), a mentioned in a prior reply, it would take well over an hour to complete this kind of attack, but, less if multiple servers are attacked. But is 4096 really the max number? I've seen process ID numbers well over 20000?
ps. why would a "security expert" leave the finger service enabled????????? Heck even I know better..
"After all, the only terrorist attack within the United States I can remember hearing about is the Unabomber. Considering how unpopular America is in some parts of the world, that seems a bit suspect."

Counter an ill-conceived joke. With such a comment?
He didn't seem to have any intent to injure. If he did, then I would say, at the very least he should apologize, for that intent to injure. In the end it was just a joke, in bad taste I will admit, but only a joke. You're offended, you have the right be. However, personally I find your response to be even more offensive, but, I ask no apology. My personal sensibilities, are no fault of yours. And likewise if my words should offend you, I find that to be your problem to deal with, not mine.
What I DO ask, is next time, try hitting the preview button first.. look at what you've said, then look at what you are saying it about. Does it REALLY deserve this ? Or maybe, even a better worded, well thought out response would be in order. And actually would accomplish much more, to show him where he was wrong. Just because he neglected to think before typing, doesn't mean you should do the same.
Cool.. You know, I think I like Jean-Louis Gassée. There is a COE with balls!! This man is willing to GIVE AWAY his product, if it means making his point. I doubt anyone will take him up on it, sadly enough, but, just this attitude is making my want yet another Hard Drive in my system, for Be:-) if for no other reason, than to help support this sort of guts with my $$$$

I welcome someone to correct me. In fact I hope they do. Just it seems to me, that Mozilla project, isn't about a product, in and of itself. I got the impression, from my ( VERY ) quick look at the MPL, that once Mozilla had nailed the technology down enough, Netscape could "package" Mozilla into a "Netscape 5.0". Also the MPL would allow other people, to "package" it another way, and distrubute that. Say as KDE or GNOME with a Mozilla core, for HTML rendering. I just felt that Mozilla itself, as a browser, is more of a demonstrator of the technology, which others could use, and not ment to be a seperate browser product itself. Did I misunderstand????
First off, Rob, and the rest of the Slashdot crew Congradulations!!:-)
You know? It's kinda of a power to people thing, isn't it? I mean, albeit in small doses, slashdot, and it's readers are making small, but, noticable changes in policies, consider Bell Atlantic, regarding Macs. Project the idea, a few years ahead... Now 80% of the American Public have access to the Internet at home, ~60% of the population of the world have Internet Access availible to them. Many new sites in the format of Slashdot pop up, each catering to the tastes of thier respective readers. One smart person makes a AllSlash network, a way to browse all of these from a central point, with a main page, listing most poopular Articles from all of them. All presenting news of importance to the reader, because the readers provide them, then discuss them in open forums. Soon it's all taken as for granted, as your daily newspaper, or evening news on TV.
I think we are the very edge of a revolution unmatched since the printing press. Maybe the power we all have, as a slashdotter, have been over stated at times, but, maybe not. How about the potentional power we will all have, when a person in a foreign country, just needs to post a quick article, and bring attention of his/her plight to millions of people, in a matter of days, others in that country doing the same, encouraged by the reactions. Soon thousands of Web Surfers e-mailing their Government, in outrage. Governments world wide, forced to face issues, they can ignore now, because most people will never know.
I don't know. Maybe I'm dreaming... but, seems to me, the Internet is giving people a voice, people who never had that voice before. We aren't changing the world yet, but, I'm almost sure, soon we will.

And what sorta special training would the techs need, over and above the training done for iMacs?
And they _require_ them to already have an Ethernet adapter? Can't they install one for someone who does have one?
"We are also working to make sure that we have a group of field technicians that are specifically trained to install the modem and software on the Mac,"
I think the REAL problem is they have rather dumb techies... how long would it take to learn that? I mean everyone knows how hard it is to install software an a Mac, and wouldn't the modem installation be the exact same as for Windows? I mean really...

One imature kiddie makes an immature comment, and you think the whole society is arrogant? You'll find this attitude with Win9x users, OS/2 Users, MacOS users, Amiga users, and yes even FreeBSD/OpenBSD users. I think it is unfair to judge the OS by a small, yet vocal, segment of it's users. I love Linux, but, if someones wants to love another OS, well, thats once of the whole foundations OSS was built upon, choice. Don't take mine away, or begrudge me for it, and I'll fight for your right to choose as I did, whatever that choice maybe.

Combine the 2, and ??? What I _hope_ to see, it something like this.. Linux programmers, working on a rock solid well rounded "back end" to a program, with Windows programmers, working on well rounded GUI's to these programs. Sooner or later, these Windows programmers will learn to love. the breadth of choices in Linux programming, and I don't fear ending up with "another windows" because of this. Imagine the feeling when a Windows API user, writes his first GTK+ program? "You mean thats it? 8 lines of code and I have a Window? KEWL!!" Anyway, If things are written using the GPL, by these Windows programmers, we can always show them "where they went wrong", can't we?;-)
