  1. its what its already /brought/ to the party! on Simply GNUstep Delivers UNIX, Simply · · Score: 3, Informative

GNUstep is the open source version of the NEXTSTEP operating system... something, that while it may not have taken off and done as well as it should have, did contribute to computing today. Really a revolutionary idea. Back in a time when start buttons werent the fad, and nobody kept an icon of a desktop on their desktop, there were some great ideas, and freedom to express them. Sounds as though these guys want forward progress through unification and a few basic ideas... something that linux is not known for, it tends to make progress ameboidotically (ok, I made that word up, but you get the idea). Unfortunantly GNUstep hasnt recieved all the development backing from the community that kde/gnome have... which isnt such a bad thing... wm has stayed relatively simple and straight to the point (along with blackbox, which isnt based on GNUstep, but has a lot of the NS feel qualities to it)... something that I think is lost in kde and gnome.

Not only is the english well put, but your touting an opinon as a fact :) No os is any better than any other os (I can eat my words on that one... but what the hell), its all in what you want it to do. Mac os is easier to use than Windows... in my opinion! I have had a lot of good experiences with Mac Os, and have missed those experiences with Windows. Mac Os does what it does, and it does it well (opinion). I think that the main difference between Windows and Mac Os is that Apple is changing what is wrong with Mac Os... something that very few people can say about Windows, without laughing. I think that this is the point that mcc was trying to make... Apple is changing what is wrong (or atleast trying), and I dont really see Microsoft trying to do this.

I think that safety at home, if just as important as safety at work. If someone injures them self at home, while doing work for their employer, then the employer should be held responsible... same as if he/she were at work. I think that the biggest issue is what changes should be made. Work place should be safe for many people, while the home is a more comfortable environment. I don't think that every rule that applies to working in the office should apply to working at home, but a company should be responsible for all of its employees.

  19. You would think...... on Linux Mandrake Gets Major Investor · · Score: 1

Mandrake sucks! I am sorry, RedHat is a newbie distro (nothing wrong with that), and Mandrake is aimed at the same market, but is getting people because of it's price. I have had the worst trouble with Mandrake and I have a lot of experience with Linux (6 distros and over 100 installs). I think that Mandrake is bad for the linux community becasue it is luring in people with the price, and then giving them shit. If they had a quality distro, then I could understand, but Mandrake is shit. What RedHat should do is create a distro aimed at first timers (most people dont say, "Hey, lets go spend 80$ on something, that we've never used before, and that is not the status quo of computing"), that is cheap (no technical service, no special packages included....), 10$ or so. Mandrake sucks my ass and it is driving "would be users" away from linux.

Everyone has to learn somewhere, and KDE and Gnome are just building blocks, until your balls develope and you use console (hey, I'm saying I did use a WM at one time, still do for netscape). Power/security just dont come from X. Besides, why the hell would you use KDE and Gnome. I hate tool bars. About the only thing that I can stand is GNUstep's WMdock in WindowMaker. But, to each, his own. Not my choice, not my X, not my comp.

  22. People are Dumb on CNN on Common Name Resolution Protocol · · Score: 1

People are dumb. You and I can remember IP numbers, but people can't even remember URL names. We already have made it simple enough. Everyone that NEEDS this should be shot (ok, maybe that is my opinion, but it should be a fact). Now we are going to get a "better" system that will return more porno pages when I look up "C programming" or even more porn pages when those people who can't remember URL's try to look up how to make cereal. I have no problem admitting that the search engines now are not the best, but when that is the de facto, that will suck. I think that ultimately this will cause more harm than good. Computers are a useful tool, but they can't (and shouldn't) think for people. Cashiers can't even make change correctly without the cash register (... the cashier owed me 4 cents. She only had 2 pennies, but plenty of nickels. I gave her a penny and she looked at me like "What is this for?" For the next 5 minutes I explained that 4 + 1 = 5. The manager finally brought another role of pennies over. She gave me 4 pennies, I turned around and gave her 5 pennies, and she gave me a nickel! This happens to me all the time, so I assume that it also happens to you). If this system sounded reasonable (yeah it sounds good on paper, but so does communism) I would fully accept the idea, but after extended use of the computer, I have found that common sense/knowledge can not be replaced by a machine thinking for someone (yes I did use spell check, call me a hypocrite if you will, but if I had never used it, I would be a better speller). Computers can make things easier, but it seems as though this idea is just going to be another hassle for everyone involved.
