how wonderful, a fungus/virus combo. i was starting to think it had something to do with the elevated aluminum levels in the soil/plants and the way plants have been genetically modified to produce their own insecticides. glad we cleared this up before some sort of disaster happens.
so why wouldn't they just setup a new website for their clients, and modify their existing website to have a bunch of search links and ads? they could make a lot of money like that if they were on the ball... but i guess complaining is a lot easier.
i was a customer of earthlink for my dsl service for about 3 years. even though they had capped my bandwidth to half of what it was from my previous provider [down to 50KB/sec up/down from 100KB/sec] i thought their service was pretty good. consistant speeds, good latency. there were some periodic downtimes that were unexplained, most of which fixed themself after a day.
i enjoyed their service until this year. my dsl stopped working, i figured it was one of the periodic downtimes, so i waited. a day went by, it still didn't work. a week went by. i called their tech support. they told me my network cables were bad. ok, so i go out and by another. it still doesn't work. i call again, this time they tell me my drivers must be corrupted. ok, so i download the latest from the manufacturer, uninstall, and reinstall. it still doesn't work. i call again, this time the guy tells me that my modem doesn't exist. haha, nice one. so after 30 or so minutes of him fumbling around through whatever manuals or documentation he has he comes to the conclusion that my network card is bad. erm ok... so i buy another, uninstall the old one, and install the new one. wouldn't you know it... it still doesn't work. a month has gone by at this point, and i call up again and ask to talk to their senior tech support guys. this time it wasn't the outsourced indians, it was actually someone here in the usa. of course he goes thru the normal crap of cables being connected and all that garbage, then procedes to look through his information. it turns out uu.net was no longer partnering with earthlink, which was preventing me from accessing the dsl service i paid for.
one whole month of calling their 'tech support' to find out they didn't even bother to notify me that they changed local partners. i didn't see any notice on their website, nor any emails sent to me about this. one would think that if such an event would occur, the isp would know about it in advance, and notify their customers in order to keep downtime to a minimum, yes? apparently that's not how earthlink rolls. they never even bothered to credit my account from the month they charged me that i couldn't possibly use, which they said they would.
while i agree that power tends to corrupt, i don't think this will be the case with google. if they do things properly and continue to innovate as they have, they won't need to abuse to make more money, they will have plenty.
assuming the guys currently in control never intend to go evil, all they have to do is ensure that whoever they eventually pass control to has the same ideals that they do.
so you can change your reg code at anytime..... am i the only one who finds this to be a little strange? what's to keep mr. virus writer guy from adding in a.vbs like this to prevent his victim from ever getting more windowsupdates? i think if someone were to get worm going on a huge as-of-yet-unposted vulnerability, and started changing regcodes in addition to whatever the worm normally does....... then we have some serious trouble.
while we may not be able to buy a non m$ os from dell, gateway, hp and all the others, there's still nothing to stop us from going to a site like http://pricewatch.org or newegg.com and building a system from scratch. it's not that hard, especially for the slash community, and for the most part it's cheaper. the only extra thing you get when you order from dell [or the likes] is the name on the tower and the x months of support. if you can build a system from scratch, then i don't see you having any problems with support.
i know that the majority of people are not going to want the hassle and the responsibility of building their own system, let alone how to make it work. m$ will continue its shenanigans as long as people remain lazy, which is what this country is unfortunately very much about.
i think we must take a stand against corporate misbehavior and government apathy soon, otherwise we won't have a chance to fix it. more people are content being force fed corporate nonsense everyday, soon they won't doubt them at all.
laser tag. doesn't anyone remember the countless hours running through your house shooting at your friends? i do. i still have all of my old laser tag equipment. it may have died for a while, but it's back in home and remote versions [q-zar?] - People think that I hear little voices inside my head telling me what to do. That's ridiculous. It's more like a movie, with these little hamster guys that hold up charts and maps and other visual aids. You know, whatever they have to use.
nice ad hominems. i'd post some links, but i doubt you're looking for a real debate on issues. drink some more fluoride, buddy!

you speak quite highly of earthlink.
