Hmmm, I can take my _entire_ mp3 catalog and download it to my memory stick walkman (not all at once obviously) no matter how I acquired the mp3, or what rights I have to it. Why should I care what format it's stored in once it's on the memory stick?

In addition, I have a secure, accountable way to purchase music in digital format (quite cheaply) that guards against theft. Sounds good to me, what exactly is your beef?

You see, it appears that they have a problem with the way the earth is rotating, and they are working with NASA to 'resolve the issue'. Apparently they are going to be testing a beta version of Microsoft Earth Service Patch 1.

When asked about the parralels between the Internet revolution and the invention of the printing press, he responded that:

"some of the hostility to the printing press originated because cheap reproduction made books and pamphlets available to more people. Previously, only kings and an elite few had access to libraries."

    And the internet?
"So far, the Internet seems to be largely amplifying the worst features of television's preoccupation with sex and violence, semi-literate chatter, shortened attention spans, and near-total subservience to commercial marketing,"

What he doesn't get is the drive of this, the second media revolution. The first gave us (the great unwashed masses) access to published materials, this one gives us access to publish materials. No longer is the media (news, non fiction, fiction et. all) under the control of "Kings and an elite few".

So no, Mr. Billings, I will not "be one of those mindless futurists, who sit in front of a lonely screen", I will be one of the millions who will be shaping your future, your nation's future, and that of the world.

The phone call to KROQ said nothing about a due date for the DVD, all George said was that he was 'working on it' and that it would be released when it was ready. The majority of overweight people in America don't overeat because they're hungry, they overeat for emotional reaons (enjoyment, 'social eating', or the hundreds of shades of depression). Eliminating the hunger is something we have been able to do for years, and it has not proven effective at all. Taken another way, if it were only the hunger, diet food would work better than it does. Telling one to avoid food altogether would be counter productive.

I'm having trouble seeing how this qualifies as 'news', as these chipshave been announced, and tested, for weeks now. This is at _least_ the fourth such article on the web, and not exactly one of the most technically well done. Read here for a much better job imho.

Even if we are to ignore the issue of this post being 'newsworthy', The reviews' implication that a P3 650 performs on par with the ~900Mhz Celermine is laughable. The reviewers decided (for whatever reason) to limit the 3d benchmarks with an old (many would say obsolete) video card. The bottleneck is clearly not the CPU at this point, an assertion backed by many of the other reviews of these chips. There is just no technical reason to support the odd results they got, nor were any attempts made to explain them.

Come on people, let's at least try to analyze what we read on the web before we submit it to /. Geez, maybe I oughta start submitting the local bowling league results.....

Bio agents will spread much slower, but still affecting many people before the epedemic is recognized. A good chem/bio weapon isn't going to go *BANG* and carry a litte yellow a flag that says *chem agent on board*.
This knowledge leads to a fatalistic response in most people; is it really worth worrying about something that you can do nothing about? It's kinda like me, living in earthquake country. My vision of a VC is a way to enhance a real-space community, wether it be a neighborhood, workplace, a club, or just your family. Using a VC to keep in touch and share things with people who missed the last get together is the only way I can really see to maintain a real sense of community online.

This is not to say that a VC can't grow out of the Internet - I've seen many VCs come out of BBSs, newsgroups, weblogs, homepages, etc. but the one thing the lasting ones have in common is that the members actually get together, share air, and basically become a real-space community.
