  1. Unfortunately and ironically, by providing exactly the thing the players demand, the players revolted.

No one demanded locked content. When you pay $60 for a game, why shouldn't you be able to just jump in immediately and fly around in the Millennium Falcon as Darth Vader? What if I'm not looking for some sort of "sense of accomplishment" in my entertainment, what if I just want an escape?

You're wrong, no one asked for this.

  2. I have this feeling that we're about to see this business model come to an end.

No it's not. This isn't going anywhere, it's just going to look different. If you think people are voting with your wallets, like that Mashable article points out, those people are a small minority. Based on the first game, the potential audience for this is somewhere around 12 million people. So, 600k people don't like some Reddit comment? OK, that's 5% of their potential market. And those aren't the people who matter, either. Again, like the article points out, there will always be the "whales" who spend the vast majority of post-release money, and those people aren't going anywhere. The rest of the game community is the product that the whales can compete with, the whales are the customers that EA is going after. And, again, like the article points out, the failure here is that the system is so complex that it makes it too obvious what's going on. The writer seems to imply that all they need to do is get better at convincing people that they can level up or whatever in a reasonable amount of time, even though the whales will still just go in and buy everything immediately.

Not enough people vote with their wallets. I'm sure you don't buy EA games, and I've had them on my boycott list for so long that I don't even remember what the final straw was. But there are still people who are probably posting negative comments about EA in this very thread, who are still going to buy the game. Why? I don't know. It's not like anyone *needs* to play this game to the point that they're going to pay a company to do something they don't like. No one needs this game, there are plenty of good games out there, but for some reason there are a lot of people who will overlook the negative things that EA consistently does and give them their money anyway.

  3. It's the same thing. If I want a TV, yeah I can wait and wait and wait because it's only getting cheaper and cheaper, right? Well, all that time waiting is without a TV. If I want a TV there's no point to wait without a TV. It goes the same with anything else. If there's a good I want, I can wait as much as possible but all of that time spent waiting without the thing I want. Eventually you're either going to buy things or decide that the only thing you want is a bank account that keeps getting worth more and more, which doesn't matter at all if you're never going to buy anything.

  4. Why should I buy something today if my money will be worth more tomorrow?

Because you've waited as long as you possibly can and you need it today.

Why would I produce a good today if it will be cheaper to produce it tomorrow?

Because your company has zero stock since you keep waiting to do anything, and a company that's not producing anything and has zero stock might as well not be in business at all. You can't pay your employees if no one is buying anything because you're not making anything.

Deflation encourages saving, discourages spending and reduces the velocity of money.

It's not like everyone would save everything and spend nothing. People still need the things they need, I'm not going to go without food today because a burger might be cheaper tomorrow.

As someone who has never lived with DST, the whole thing seems stupid. In some places it makes no sense at all, like Alaska. During the summer the sun hardly sets at all, what's the point of changing the clock so that the sun is at the highest around 2pm in Anchorage or Fairbanks? Shouldn't that be closer to noon?

The entire thing doesn't need to be habitable, the habitable structures could be built inside it to take advantage of the additional protection. Presumably it would also be best to build any structures in a location that won't be hit by the sun to avoid the expansion and contraction every time the sun appears or goes away.

I think we're in agreement though based on the comment you replied to.

I was just referring to the comment about "most people". "Most people" don't interact with developers at all. "Information Technology" sounds like a term that is broad enough to include developers, but there are a lot of companies out there who don't employ software developers at all but still have an IT department, and that department is in charge of maintaining the computers and network equipment. So I was saying that "most people" see "IT" as those kinds of people, not developers.

I'm using the number quoted in The Fucking Article. I know it's a stretch to assume that anyone is going to read that before commenting, so here, I'll paste that part for you:

If Apple decides to replace the keyboard, it sends out the computer to replace the entire top case; there is no such thing as replacing an individual key or just the keyboard. On a Macbook Pro, the top case retails for $700, but the computers haven’t been around long enough for anyone to be out of warranty yet. In regular MacBooks, which were first available in the spring of 2015, Apple has quoted as much $330 to replace a top case out of warranty. The path from "a piece of dust" to "$700 repair" is terrifyingly short.

Also, just to make sure we're talking about the same thing here, this sounds like it's for the latest model of their laptops, which can be a little confusing to search for because it sounds like people have to specify the year to find their actual model.

HEY EVERYONE, WE'VE BEEN LIED TO!

I'm not sure if that was really the point of the article though. I'm pretty sure that the point was that, whatever the tiny cause of the problem was, whether a defect in the incredibly delicate butterfly switch, or something shorting out something else, the fix is to spend around $700 (once the warranty expires, anyway) to replace half the case. It's kind of stupid to design a keyboard where the individual keys are not serviceable. I think that was the point of the article, not trying to technically diagnose what the specific cause was in this one instance.

It kind of sounds more like a mechanical problem with the butterfly switch than an electrical problem. At least the fix is the same in either case though. Just $700 or so for a new top case, and the metal shaving or piece of dust or whatever is no longer a problem. Until you get the same problem again, but rest easy, it's just $700 to replace half the case.

I don't know who the "you people" you think you're talking to are, but I knew before the primaries even started that I would never vote for Clinton. Shit, she's the second most-disliked candidate in the history of presidential polling, a lot of people don't like her and refuse to vote for her and I'm one of them. And, again, this has absolutely nothing to do with the Russian state security services. If you think that Putin isn't playing a long game that involves the rise of dictators or authoritarian leaders friendly to Russia anywhere he can help that happen, and the eventual collapse of the EU and NATO, then you're not paying attention. This has nothing to do with Hillary Clinton. The fact that Putin was campaigning against Clinton is only a footnote in the bigger picture.
