Ten dollars to ship a CD-ROM? I hope it comes with a printed manual, or something.

Are they perhaps doing something silly, like shipping them all from Canada? I don't know if Corel even has an office in the US, it seems like everything in North America goes out of the Ottawa office. Either that, or they're just trying to make a couple of bucks off of shipping...

  3. WOW on The Digital Millennium Copyright Act: Part Two · · Score: 1

I read your message, and I just sat back and said WOW. You hit the nail on the head. I shouldn't be saying "I am gonna listen to Spice Girls whenever and however I want, copyright be damned", it's "If they want me to pay large sums of money to listen to the Spice Girls, I'm not gonna listen to them at all." I'll make my own music.

Part of the whole copyright debate seems to stem from our desire for popular culture. We want it because they are paying to put it everywhere....

A while ago, I was reviewing a MPMan for mp3.com, and I had in my car with me. Since it came with crappy earbud headphones, I used my Aiwa headphones (with a 10-foot cord). Anyway, as I was getting out of the car, I accidentally caught the headphone cord unknowingly. Attached to the end of its 10-ft cable was the MPMan. As the cable tightened, I moved out of the car, and the MPMan flew along. It *skipped* across the parking lot and finally came to rest about 15 ft away. But it still played fine after that... :)

Same here on both counts! I've got a Tekram controller and it's supported wonderfully under Linux. I love my 9GB Quantum Atlas drive too. Plus a Plextor 40X SCSI-2 drive (it comes in a Wide version too...). I probably spent an extra $200 or so for the privilege, but it was well worth it in performance. (I have a nearly equally configured PC with a cheapo Maxtor 27GB drive instead.)

  9. Re:We've got Y2K problems. on Y2K Rollover - Post Your Experiences Here! · · Score: 2

Here, also in Minnesota, we've had a couple more-than-minor Y2K problems, but they started December 10th. The contact management database, Telemagic v14.0, is not Y2K compliant. It hit a recall date (take the current date and add 3 weeks) of past 2000. Once that happened, the entire customer database got hosed. All 55,000 records. On the 21st, Telemagic came out with a patch, but it only fixes the program so it won't screw up any more databases. This one is already screwed up...

Also, the launcher program KickOff (from WordPerfect 6.0), like Cron, reports the next launch date as 6am on 1/1/100. It is used to start this report printing software every morning. There is only one server here with the problem, but I know of another site with over 200 installations of KickOff...

  10. Solar Lawn Mower on The Geek Toy Vacuum Cleaner · · Score: 3

How about a solar lawn mower instead? I saw one of these in action a couple of years ago. They're pretty cool, they use buried wire to mark the border of the yard, and they just roam freely, constantly cutting grass. And they set off an alarm if someone tries to haul it away without punching in a password.

I had gone up to Fargo (Moorhead actually) from Minneapolis to a see a friend of mine. We decided to go to the movies that night. We had been talking about life in Minneapolis vs. Fargo. I had mentioned that we had had a few protests and things at the U of M. When we pulled up to the theater, we saw protesters outside picketing the movie Dogma. We had planned to see Sleepy Hollow, but when we saw posters that said DOGMA IS BLASPHEMOUS TO OUR LORD and a giant Jesus picture, we said we had to see Dogma instead.

I want to thank those protesters. Without them, I would have not seen Dogma! We both enjoyed the film immensely. We were both raised Christians (he Catholic) and I think that the movie makes people *THINK*. It challenges their faith, which is a good thing, because it will cause a person to reevaluate their faith. They will either become stronger in it, or realize that it really isn't what they believe in.

Another proposal -- lets get rid of the letter 'C' altogether. K and S would work just fine. Or maybe (sinse we want to kill CH too, we kould cange the letter C to the CH sound.)

I wouldn't really call it easy. It took about 6-10 hours, with a lot of hot gluing. At first, the "Engineering" took a bit of time, until we came up with the motherboard-on-the-top design. The other problem was getting a base to put the whole computer on. We couldn't find a big enough Lego base in K-Mart the night we bought the legos, so we bought a plastic serving tray. We cut the tray out in about the shape of the motherboard, then stuck the drives and motherboard on top of the tray. We glued the motherboard to the drives, so it's going to be a bit hard to get it apart if something breaks. And it's very quiet. But the power supply is in a separate Lego box, so that helps too.
