    Even some of the header files are remarkably analogous to what is found with the X Window System.


    You could say the same thing about Microsoft Windows.


    All generic heirarchical windowing systems are similar in implementation because they're similar in theory.

    Anybody who thinks you can make a portable toolit using native widgets has not tried to write one.


    Not true. You just don't get precise control over exactly how things are rendered. It's like writing HTML 1.0.

    Prior to Winamp, there was a program called Macamp. Both were based on the amp source code from some guy whose name I have forgotten. I have no idea what the status of Macamp is anymore.

    Okay, I guess it is related to the Native Americans. And I guess it is an inappropriate term to use, and after this, I will most likely never use the term again.


    However, from your explanation, I think my idea was actually correct or at least almost accurate. The GPL idea of software is actually somewhat like the Native American idea of land. GPL software is like the land in that it is not something that can be owned by anyone.

    It's incompatible because the GPL is more restrictive. GPL is like BSD plus a bunch of extra crap. If you're going to give something away, give it away. GPL is "indian giver" (note: not related to Native Americans) software, as in "okay, I'll give it to you, but you have to give it back".

    If I recall correctly, Blizzard hired the artists who did the art for the Games Workshop books and magazines to do the art for Warcraft.


    I'm really suprised that GW didn't sue Blizzard way back when they had the chance. Perhaps Blizzard paid them off.

    Actually, the stem cells were not from fetuses, but rather from frozen embryos which were produced for artificial insemination. The embryos were unused.


    I'm kind of the opinion that even if the embryo is a "life", we should destroy them anyway. Some of the conservative morons say that destroying these embryos is morally equivalent to the Nazis killing millions of Jews in the years leading up to World War II. I disagree. There is a difference. These embryos can't fight back or even argue in their defense. Therefore, we can destroy them with impunity. :-)

    Even that isn't "true 3D", since you only get the 3D effect when you're looking straight at the monitor from a predetermined distance. Plus, if I recall correctly, to do it right, you have to calibrate the distance between your left and right eyes.

    The problem with that is, if it's GPL, then anyone can take it and sell it, as long as they keep the source code open (GPL). A commercial licence is only useful for commercial entities who want to make modifications and sell the result, while keeping the changes closed. For example, Id Software released the Quake I source code under the GPL. However, they still own it and are free to licence it under a different licence to game developers, etc.

    Don't forget some of the other things that are written into the Constitution, such as the rule that slaves be counted as 3/5 of a person for purposes of figuring out the number of congressional representatives.


    Slavery, like intellectual property, was so important to the founding fathers, that these rules and protections had to be included in the Constitution.

    This guy needs to flee the country. Seriously. He needs to seek political asylum in Russia. If he can, he needs to make a run for a Russian embassy. There's probably one in San Francisco. Once there, they'll be able to figure out what to do with him and how to get him back to his own country. Right now he is being unfairly and politically targetted because of his beliefs.


    And yes, it is incrediblly ironic that a man in the United States of America needs to flee to Russia and seek political asylum.

    the ACLU is still doing a number of other wonderful things and still deserves your support.

    If they're not supporting the issues that you believe in, what is the point in supporting them? I'd rather let the people whom they represent do the supporting.


    If Dmitry had written some software to get around pornography censorship, then the ACLU would have supported him. Don't get me wrong, I'm all in favor of porn. But there's more to life than just lots of porn.

    This form of discrimination (if you can even call it that) is different from all others. Racism, sexism, anti-semitism, ageism, discrimination against the ugly, the fat, the homosexual, the young, the smart, the dumb, the cool, and the uncool are all forms of discrimination which cannot be fundamentally dodged. Discrimination against low bandwidth users is easy to overcome by simply (and usually relatively inexpensively) upgrading your net connection. If only it were as easy to change your looks, your vocation, or your abilities.

    I think the analogy you were getting at was "If you want to drive, you have to give money to Standard Oil" and "If you want to build a ship or a bridge, you have to buy steel from Carnegie" and "If you want to use a phone, you have to pay AT&T".

    Well, I want to use my computer. But I don't have to pay Microsoft to use their OS. I can use Linux or BSD or Solaris or one of a dozen other OS's. And I can do my work without ever needing to use any Microsoft product. That's not what I call a monopoly.

    Just because 95% of the people choose to use Microsoft's OS's and software doesn't make them a monopoly.
