The folks at http://fieldlines.com/ have been doing this for years. The bigger problems are the sealing of the cells and the fact that since these are most likely rejects the cells might nog give their rated power.

The article summary is dead wrong in suggesting that this is somehow proof that solar cells could be produced cheaper, these cells have probably been hijacked on the way to the recycler.

'making' a solar panel in your garage does not start off with buying solar cells and hooking them up, it starts with sand.

large metal case ? you must be referring to some bbc model that I'm not familiar with, I thought I had all of them! Especially the 'slots' bit is somewhat confusing, do you by chance mean the option rom sockets or do you mean the berg connectors at the bottom ?

  11. Re:Huh? on Old Computers Resurrected As Instruments At Bletchley Park · · Score: 3, Informative

The bbc micro sat in a yellow injection moulded plastic case.

It had no 'expansion slots', but it did have several connectors at the edge of the pcb that you could use for expansion (berg connectors).

    These included:

    - printer port
    - the 'tube', a bi-directional link for a second processor
    - the user port
    - the 1Mhz bus.

Internally there were a number of option rom sockets, which with some trickery could be used for a ram expansion (bank switched 16 k windows).

There were no 'slots' of any kind.

I'm not sure which computer you are referring to here but I have never seen a bbc model b encased in anything other than plastic unless it was done as a custom job.

I wished someone would keep such a line of machines alive for kids today to learn how to code on. There is absolutely no way you're going to completely 'grok' that machine on your desktop, one of these small machines you actually stand a chance.

  25. Re:YouTube Illumination on History of the LED — the Movie · · Score: 1

Because a 'cats whisker' or detector diode never was intended to be a led, it is simply a side effect and only then with a specific kind of crystal and circuitry. It's intended use was to rectify currents, not to produce light.

To label it 'a primitive led' is a bit over the top, if it would have said 'which can be used to create a primitive kind of led' would have been a lot more accurate.

I've played countless hours with them as a kid when building crystal radio sets, never once seen one light up.

The wording of the summary suggests with 'primitive kind of led' that that was its intended function, it was not. It was a 'primitive kind of diode', and with the right combination of crystal and current you can apparently make one light up.
