  1. This happens in many other places. on Ethics In Computer Consulting · · Score: 1

I was in an outlet of a large computer chain the other day.

There was this old couple that wanted to buy a computer, and I heard them say that they wanted a computer so they could exchange email with their children and grandchildren.
The salesmen was then pushing CD Burners, Network Cards, Modems (yes, both), 21" monitors, 1 ghz processors, etc.

This reminds me of the times in the 1800's (or earlier, I can't remember anymore, thats school for you) where not many people could read, and thus the priests could tell those people what the bible said. And since the people could not read, they could not find out the truth for themselves.

Computer user groups should make themselves available to people who do not understand computers enough so that they know enough to be able to buy exactly what they want, and not get ripped off by a sleazebag salesman who wants to become the sales-person of the month.

I thought because of open source they could do that anyways.

I doubt the companies listed in the beginning of the article ever had the ability to have microsoft change windows to their liking either.

In my opinion, linus is the best guy to take care of the kernel. If a non-profit company were to take over, I'm sure there would be alot of in-fighting about the direction of the kernel.

  6. Great Idea. on Correlations Between Video Games And Academic Achievement? · · Score: 1

This is a great idea, I've been trying to convice teachers, parents, etc. That playing video games develop alot of other skills, it would be nice to have studies to actually back that up.

I think that more than one game needs to be played. As I child, I didn't play just one game, but I played a whole bunch. However in each game I learned another skill that could be applied to the next one.

How about this for a study? Have subjects perform a bunch of tasks that they have not done before and rate their progress. Then have subjects play a series of games for an hour or more each day, for a week. At the end of their game playing, have them perform more tasks that they have not done before, that involves some of the skills learned in video games.

I suggest using children as the subjects, as the things learned from games probably are more prominent in them as they haven't learned the skills from another source.

From my experiences, these are juvenile webmasters, who use internet explorer themselves, and don't want to be bothered with netscape compatibility, but don't want to be called lazy either, and instead put up a message about how netscape sucks, and everyone is using internet explorer, and netscape/mozilla users should "follow the group"
