Banning VOIP ports is silly, not just because controlling the internet this way is a bad idea, it's because the quality of internet service over there is so bad that VOIP is almost unworkable anyway. Or at least, that's what I've discovered, being called by my father-in-law from Panama using net2phone. "Hello? Hello? Hey, it must be your dad calling, I can't hear anything."

  6. Re:This will work for a while... on Using MAC Address to Uniquely Identify Computers · · Score: 2

I think that's a brilliant idea actually. GameArena could set themselves up as a kind of Certificate Authority and issue a key to every gamer. The procedure to get a certificate in the first place should be just onerous enough to make people reluctant to get banned - a good one would be to require a credit card number. As far as I can see this would be hard for cheaters to get around, randomizing their private key won't help... Nor should the private keys of others be easy to steal or generate.

My intuition says that there is years of work in this project. And, you ask, how does a professional programmer approach such a task? This kind of project is difficult and expensive even for teams of professionals with a lot of money behind them. They start with whiteboards, and use cases, and specs, etc.

If I were you, the first thing I would do is identify a very small subset of the functionality - say, the ability to parse and view a .mdl file - and try that first. Perhaps there's a need out there for a model viewer. A project of the scope has a chance of completion, and if you're still enthusiastic at that point you can expand the scope of your app, building on the code you already have.

Again, I'm sure you're smart and understand coding and the right physics, but the one thing the experience of a professional programmer would give you is a sense of the scope of this task.

  9. How does squishy work? on "Squishy" DRM? · · Score: 2

Interestingly, I had the same idea a while ago - embed the ID of the creator or legitimate owner in the file. That way, if it gets out the original creator can at least in theory be held accountable under existing copyright laws.

I couldn't get very far with the scheme since as I was trying it, anyone who could get a hold of several copies of a song could figure out which bits were the id and change some of them. I didn't have the energy to pursue it after that, especially since I'm not sure it would prove a satisfactory disincentive to piracy anyway. Maybe something with a secret checksum but that would easily be hacked.

If they solved these problems, it would be nice, except that it seems too late to stop the RIAA Nazis.
