Then we have the Orange Catholic Bible and the backlash against technology and "thinking machines"

If you expand on that, giving other people power, is not necesarily a good idea. I personally know several people that I would not want to give more power to.

Having said that, this does not detract from the message. In fact I rather enjoy these ongoing discussions of what freedom actually means. Everyone has their own interpretation of this, and well they should. If you can get by the flames and the trolls (please adjust your thresholds accordingly) there are a lot of good ideas to be had, here and elsewhere.

With a little luck you will find other people who's idea of freedom is close to your own. I really believe that this is the best that we're going to get. That however doesn't mean that we should stand still. People write software mainly 'cause it's a cool way to kill time, or pay rent and buy cool things like DVD's and Spawn action figures.

The license that they are going to release the software under has to do with where their personal understanding of freedom lies.

Can you really tell someone that their own understanding of freedom is wrong. I could not, but I might be interested in speaking (typing) with them to try and glean some understanding of their position. Later I would relate my position if they were interested in hearing it.

This latest piece on the nature of power raises some interesting questions. As one who writes code your work preceeds you, and may or may not impinge on the freedoms of those who would use it.

Anyhoo, it's interesting to read, in the meantime I'm gonna break out another six pack and watch the LOTR trailer again.

Actually Active Directory if implemented properly will do almost all of the things you're talking about. Unattended installs, license monitoring, install on demand for applications, and with a little cleverness in the login scripts, hotfixes and patches.

However I have yet to see a perfectly optimized Active Directory Network set up like this.

And I've been looking for one. Most people have half-assed Win2K / NT4 / Novell / Sun / Linux setups. I exagerate a bit (okay a lot), but the point it that inorder to get all of that wonderfull functionality that Win2k and AD can provide, it's an all or nothing type of commitment.

I don't know anyone that want's to put all thier eggs one basket, especially if it's Microsoft's basket.

Then of course it the new Pay More Now or Pay More Later licensing swindle. For months I have been trying to get some of our customers to pay attention to this, and only recently they've begun to realize that, if you are not up to date now, there is no upgrade. You have to buy everything all over again.

I'm starting to not make sense, so I'll summarize.

Active Directory and Windows 2000 can do all those cool things you're talking about, but you have to have an all Microsoft network. And you've got to cough up the coin. So really it's not a vialble option for most people, and that's assuming you can find people who can understand the damn stuff.

We all want to retire and buy a cabin and spend the rest of our day making finshing fly, writing novels, debugging print drivers or what ever.. But we need money to do that. So we invest in mutual fund, we have RRSP's or 401k's or what ever.
