It's likely that the patent application predates the entire PVR war. It's not necessarily that the folks at the patent idiots are entirely clueless (could be; I don't know, and am MUCH too lazy to go look up the original date of the patent application, though it is one click away).
Hmm, too lazy to look up prior art, eh? How'd you like a job at the patent office?;^)
I think we're missing the point here. It's not that the White House is hiring someone from inside a company that has a track record of releasing buggy software, it's that one of the most powerful and malicious companies in the world now has a tangible foothold inside the White House. Remember how Juliani came on stage and thanked Bill Gates for his wonderful contributions to society during the XP launch, how the world was in his debt? Personally I don't doubt that Microsoft's influence is strong enough that Bush might decide to run in 2004 with Bill Gates as his Vice President. It seems far fetched, I know, but then again so did the idea that Microsoft could control the outcome of the court decision against itself through sheer politics.
All of a sudden it's illegal to use the words "kill" and "president" in the same day, let alone sentence.
Hello Citizen,
Please remain where you are. Secret service agents are currently enroute to your residence. Do not be alarmed. We just wish to have a little chat. Brew a fresh pot of coffee and wait for us on the floor, face down, hands behind your back.
Most families have 2-3 PCs tops. Why on earth would they want to have a family license when they can actually obtain individual licenses (+discs) for a mere 10-20$ more. Am I missing something here?
I don't see what you're saying. People would want to pay more for a product they could only install on one system, as opposed to paying less for multiple systems? They get a single disk no matter which type they buy. Seems more sensible to pay for the Family License -- it costs less, and you can decide if you want to install it on multiple computers. If you want multiple XP disks, you'd need to shell out $90-$100 per disk no matter which license you choose.
(WinXP "Home Version" is a dumbed down version of the corporate version.)
I'm a complete Linux Newbie, so please don't mod me down for just asking. Was there ever a kernal 2.3? Or will we be seeing it when 2.2 reaches a certain development point?
Hm, no, that's exactly what Microsoft was looking for in it's "you have to purchase any new software after 5 years" clause. (And yeah, it helps them in the long run, too.)
I'm sick of this crap. Time to start a second Internet. Free up all the domain names all over again, and this time, keep out all the corporate lawyers. Let's have some FREEDOM again! Who's with me?
Er... you mean something like freeWeb, which operates on top of freeNet??
According to Dotster, http://www.vivsucks.com is still available. If I wasn't so poor, I'd register it myself. Would someone be kind enough to purchase it and donate it to the guy who just got the shaft from WIPO?
It is kind of funny to think that www.vivendiSucks.com will probably redirect to www.vivendi.com... Kind of like if www.MicrosoftAKAUltimateEvil.com redirected to www.microsoft.com...
"...where you see Sun machines, IBM, etc and ask them what they running on those machines"
Fess up Linus, you wrote this, didn't you?
Well, if it was a paper memo it was probably a mistake by the person who typed up the memo for the register. Otherwise we would probably see [sic] next to it.
After the DoJ cave-in it should be obvious that the only way for non-MS products to survive is to proactively destroy Microsoft. Unless you're vested in MSFT, you should be doing everything legal + ethical toward that goal (though there's no reason to suppose that MS will hamstring itself with the "legal + ethical" bit).
If Microsoft will be lobbying for these laws, IBM and other companies that sell Linux products will be lobbying against them.
"I took the initiative in creating the internet." -- Al Gore
The government merged two large networks to make the Internet we know today. Al Gore was a large part of getting this accomplished. So from a politicians' point of view, he did "create" the internet... sort of.
Perhaps now we'll finally see the introduction of v.92 modems, with faster upload times and more reliable connections. And could someone tell me what's going on with the 53k limit placed on 56k modems?
Trillian is a good messenging program that combines them all into one. The interface is a bit oversimplified and lacking in a few features, but I still use it for all my instant messenging needs.
IBM already sells something of this sort: Netvista X series
Absolutely right, and I love it. It's got the imac-ish look to it but comes with more than one button. I'm posting from one right now.

Plutocracy, here we come!

Nobody's looking for any money in 5 years

What a relief!
When I first saw the title I misread it as "Michael Jackson would settle for the children".
*Whew*...
Fluffy (the giant three-headed dog) was quite fuzzy, typical of bad special effects.
Sorry about that. For the next movie, we'll shave him and call him "skinny".
I refuse to buy the third and fourth in hardback
Why?

Sorry, .gif *is* lossy for images over 256 colors.
Transparency, with lossy compression, layers and animation support.
Gosh. I have no idea where you'd Find something like that.
Noooooooooooo!
.png was supposed to protect against!
This was what
And people think Microsoft is slimy?
...throw DOS in there. :)
I think you meant to say FreeDOS.
(What's a "blue screen"?)
What's it like knowing that, if (God forbid) Linus and Alan were hit by a bus, you might be "The Man"?
What, both of them? Like if Alan decided to run over Linus, and then gets crushed when his own bus rolls back over him while inspecting his handywork?
That's going a bit overboard for a grudge against the new VM, isn't it?
Oh, and in case anyone is misled... the neutrino observatories are assuredly NOT there to catch supernovae.
Well I hope not! You'd need one hella-big containter to catch an entire supernova...

Who's bigger right now, anyway? Microsoft or IBM?
It sounds like we could use a fs made from the ground up taking the best features from ext2/3 and ReiserFS...
if he hadnt stolen QDOS
I was under the impression the Microsoft bought the Quick and Dirty Operating System?
