While ranting to a family member the other day about how disgusting it was that the RIAA was trying to sneak provisions to protect themselves into anti-terrorism legislation, we were discussing what a pissed-off, disenfranchised young person such as myself could do about crap like this.
Does anyone know of an accurate and up-to-date list of CDs that are "protected"? Anyone in the Central Florida area want to help me hand out flyers in front of every Best Buy and Peaches and mall in the area? Is there a website where we can organize boycotts across the US against this kind of crap?
I have thousands of MP3s. Some are probably not legit, as I have had a lot of my CDs stolen, scratched, or both, but dont have the media anymore. Most are perfectly legit, as I either own them on vinyl or they are live bootlegs or mixsets. Some probably fall into a grey area, but whatever. ALL the music I listen to is on my computer. When I listen to the radio it is NPR for the news. If these assholes think they are losing a sale because I'm downloading tracks off OpenNap or Gnutella, they are sorely mistaken. Fat chance I will ever support ANY RIAA member label again.
I tend to be quite cynical most of the time (imagine that), but this crap has gone on long enough and it has pissed me off to the point I want to do everything (legally) in my power to piss off the RIAA. Any other disgusted but motivated young citizens interested in fucking over the RIAA?? It's the American way!
Fuck the RIAA. Fuck Hilary Rosen. Fuck Jack Valenti. Etc. etc. etc...
I got a chance to play with a ToughBook at work, CEO has one (it's good to be the king =). Its kinda chunky, supposedely you can stand on top of it when it is closed. The touchpad feels a little low res. Pretty quick though. And it had a CDPD modem with antenna built in, kinda slick.
My iPaq holds up ok. From what I've seen the screens get scratched quite a bit. I made screen covers cheap using templates from PocketPCPassion.com and some transparencies from the supply closet (gross misuse of company resources? better post anonymously!).
Yea, but like it will stop cops from pulling over people at random?? That is mentioned as a benefit to the device, I just have a hard time swallowing it.
Then again, maybe I'm just cynical because most of the cops I have encountered live up to every pig stereotype.
I work for a company doing a lot of wireless VoIP stuff, and can imagine all sorts of cool stuff you could do with this. Just load up OpenH323 and you have a functioning VoIP phone for anywhere. A guy who works with me has written an open source H323 app for WinCE on the iPAQ, and I bet it would be simple to port to a device like this!

Damn right you don't want to know. I recall a couple years back when several criminals were being released early, and the local paper published their names, photographs, and rap sheets. You wouldn't believe the kind of violent crimes some of these people had committed. One I recall was a man who had raped a woman, been released, then tracked down the same woman and killed her, THEN raped her.
The law enforcement industry, and its good friend the incarceration industry, is one of the fastest growing industries in this country. Don't kid yourself, it is all about money. It is obviously much easier to keep a bunch of non-violent pot-smoking drug offenders locked up instead of a bunch of violent criminals.
True and it's not anyones fault when a pedestrian is in the road when they get ran down
You're right, it is the stupid pedestrian's fault, they should have used a crosswalk. In my state (FL), if you hit someone who is crossing the street illegaly it isn't (necessarily) your fault.
or the drug dealers fault that the human waste of america like chemical induced euphoria instead of real life
True once again. Drug dealers wouldn't be around if there wasn't a demand, once again proving why the War On Drugs is a losing battle. Pedophilia is a touchy subject (kinda like abortion here in the states). Even if this guy is a hack in the eyes of some, I'm glad he can open some eyes to a different point of view. Pedophilia is a horrible thing, but lynch mobs and vigilante violence against innoncents in the name of fighting it is much much worse. Maybe you didnt notice the --End Sarcasm-- at the end of his post. Or maybe I've just been trolled...
I can think of plenty of reasons this would be useful.
With my Dreamcast I can burn an (WinCE) OS and a bunch of MP3s on a CD and listen to them. I can burn a VCD and watch that. I can boot Linux from a CD. I can also (get this) play Dreamcast games.
Running Linux on the PS2 may not be useful for someone with 3 or 4 computers in their home already, but you cant play Gran Turismo 3 on your home computer either =)
First of all, MySQL probably wouldnt be the best choice, as it doesnt support certain database features (e.g. transactions, triggers, etc.). If the database were PostGres, the problem wouldnt have existed. And if it did, the source is there (open source, get it?) and the lab could fix it themselves or contract someone to do so.
It goes beyond SQL Server being a Microsoft product. A database server that loses data, no matter how infrequently, is UNACCEPTABLE. How can they claim it is an enterprise level database?
As my company's in-house open source zealot, I always look for alternatives to expensive, closed source software, but I am all for using the right tool for the job. SQL Server has some features that open source databases dont just yet, like fairly good scalability through clustering and such, but after this fiasco I dont think I would EVER trust data to SQL Server.
70Mbps sounds sweet, but I would be worried about limited range at that high a frequency. Here at work we have done extensive testing with 2.4 GHz transmitters and the most range you can get without a high gain antenna is about 1 mile LOS (at about 1 W). Complicating it is the fact that a leaf is about the size of one wavelength, so trees tend to cause a lot of loss. Have any links with some info?
I went on Wednesday with some friends from work, mostly geek types (engineers, programmers). We all enjoyed it for the most part. Based on the comments I saw the other day on the other FF thread, I went into it not expecting much except eye candy. Some people had described it as having an anime kind of feel, and I would have to agree. It had that anime attention to detail while not fleshing out a lot of parts. The plot is secondary to the visuals, but it was still entertaining. If you dig anime and can deal with the plot not being spoonfed to you, you probably will dig this movie. I just let myself sink into it, and after a few minutes, forgot I was watching CG =).
Isn't one of the driving factors behind contributing to Open Source software getting mad propz? Maybe a better idea would be a pretty bitmap (ala lilo on RH 7.x) and you can hit esc to see the full output?
The riser card you describe is the only way to get a PCI card in a 1U case, and they are available. But I have yet to see a 1U case that accept more than 1 PCI card. General Technics has several 1U cases available, check it out.
Explain this to me. A website that posts the personal information, pictures, "Wanted" posters, and other information that has incited violence against abortion providers doesn't get censored because it is a "free speech" issue, yet the courts see fit to censor 2600 for posting links to DeCSS. So we have to protect corporate intere$ts, but g0d forbid we censor a bunch of militant Christians. I'm not advocating that we censor their site, as I'm all for freedom of speech, but where is the line drawn? Corporate profits are more important than the risk of violence against doctors and their patients?
If they write something that contradicts the colective opinion of slashdotters, it is 'typical of business reporting', and obviously has something to do with 'millions, that MS...'.
Let's rephrase that to "When a story reads like a press release" it is "typical of business reporting". The article sounds like Microsoft's PR department wrote it themselves.
Let's admit it, there's no other reason why HeavenCo exists, the free speech argument seems pretty fickle, since you would be protected in the US or any half decent country anyway.
Hahahahahaha! *wipes tears from eyes* You don't live in the US, do you?
>Therefore, the other committee members designed a memory technology in a
clean room environment that just happened to infringe on *pending* patents.
IIRC, the patent they filed in 1990 was unrelated to SDRAM. However, because of the way the USPTO works, they were able to apply for the SDRAM patent later, but using the original application date of 1990.
RAMBUS is clearly in the wrong. It isn't a matter of them being "smart enough". Just because they found a way to monopolize on the DRAM industry doesn't mean they are entitled to do so.
Bush did this because it goes along with his beliefs
Bush's beliefs arent supposed to have anything to do with this. He was "elected" to carry out the will of the people. Two-thirds of Americans, whether they think abortion is murder or not, agree that a women's right to choose is paramount. Not that I would expect Fraud Dubya Bush to respect that.
Does anyone know of an accurate and up-to-date list of CDs that are "protected"?
Color me a putz, oops... That's what I get from posting when I should be working! Next, off to Kinko's to print up a couple thousand flyers!

Why is it that the number of times a company uses the word "innovation" is directly related to how much I distrust them?
The above article was very helpful. Someone mod this guy up!

Ahh, McDonalds, a corporation which really embodies the American Way. Read that article and ask yourself how healthy you think Mickey-D's is.
