  1. Re:Home Depot gets it on Tech Support: Sucking Even More · · Score: 1

Too bad Home Depot doesn't let you know that there is a different grade of goods made for their store. When you buy a water heater for example, it IS NOT the same quality as an identical-looking one in a plumber's supply house. Companies like Kohler, Milwaukee, Dewalt get paid to produce cheaper models for Home Depot. The friendly service is just foreplay while you get screwed.

I too work tech support at an ISP. The funny thing is, we have to support products that aren't really our problem. In fact, I'd say 90% of my calls are to support Netscape or IE. I have to get yelled at because Eudora blows goats or their Mac Performa isn't as internet ready as their brother-in-law swore it was. At least a half dozen times a week I'll take a call with a user demanding to know how to use whatever program they just bought and they get pissed when I explain I don't support the Corel Suite on a Mac or PC. Most of the time, I do get to help someone's Grandmother get onto e-bay or her email, which is always good. Get this, we even allow customers to bring in their machines for FREE if it's an internet related problem to be fixed. And guess what, people don't understand why we charge more for our service. In fact, they bitch because we're $2 a month more than the other provider in the area whose first line when you call for support is "call your reseller, you're not my problem" Providing tech support is an expensive pain in the ass, and while I hate it when I can't get it when I need it sometimes. I understand why some companies seem to blow it off.

That's nice they are going to spend that much money on the special briefcases. I have a slightly better plan. How about NOT PUTTING NATIONAL SECRETS ON A GODDAMN LAPTOP. And on the occasion you do really need to, do the cliche and handcuff it to the couriers freaking arm. Let's see them leave it in a taxi then. Both the British and U.S. have had appalling breaches of security with portable computers and devices. What I think really needs to happen is for the system and or security admins to get more authority to tell some of these people how to operate. Give the admins enough authority to tell the little scientists and agents that "hey, I'm sorry you find this inconvenient, but, you're working with whatever national secrets. Too freaking bad, deal with it". Then maybe you won't have missing laptops and harddrives(Los Alamos) as often.

Microsoft's technical archive online is really good for when you get stuck. And here's some news for you Linux heads out there. Linux is in no fucking position yet to take over the desktop market. If you think it is come to work with me as tech support at an ISP and speak to the average computer user. Then we'll try to get them to untar a few files and attempt to compile some software. Apple pulls way more propietary bullshit on people and everyone kisses Steve Job's ass. Let me put it this way, in the early days of automobiles before the ignitions required keys. Which put a bigger dent in the number of car thefts? Legislation against car theft or making it so you needed a key to start the car? Going after individuals who send SPAM is a futile task compared to cracking down on ISP's that refuse to secure their equipment. Take a large ISP like, hhhmmm rhymes with Dearthlink, that allows any idiot to relay SPAM off their servers. They end up sending more SPAM overall than any individual spammer could dream of. And yes, I know that there are many .cn and .jp's out there that will make up for it but it's no excuse for any mail server inthis country to be left open for a spammer's needs.
