Was MacOS so secure? As far as I know it was not multi-user and before version 9 not even multi-profile.
I think the most important reason for lack of virusses for the mac was a limitited technical functionality and more important a limited user base.
The most important was probably that MS wasn't capable of writing a completely cross-platform version of VBA for Office and IE/Outlook.
PS, the fact the artikel ends with.htm instead of.html sais it all.
The TOS still has been very strange, it wasn't a bug but intentional tought out by someone, but than again, a lot of TOS, licinses are very strange.
Anyway I think password.com is extremely useful, It's annoying and does not feel right you'll have to reenter information on every site.
The only problem might be that it is from MS, but it's not their fault no one else came with the idee sooner.
In the Netherlands there's a plan from the goverment to give everyone his or her own 'digital save', this might be(come) similar too.
If the article is right, MS has changed the OS slightly so audio ripping software (from other vendors) doesn't work well anymore ('it is not optimized for XP').
It will play MP3's, but it can only record MP3's at low quality. MS probably hopes consumers will think MP3 sucks after they've recorded it with Windowsmediaplayer.
Actually, I liked Storm. I moved from SuSe to Storm (and Debian on my other box) because of it.
Bof apt-get, deb etc., my Storm installation is slightly transformed in an Debian installation, there's not much difference anyway.
Single user sucks. I set Windows 9x to multi profile, it doesn't beat true multi-user but it's better.
Many people are messing with multiple profiles in their E-mail client, complaining when someone has rearranged they're icons, wanting to hide or secure some files from other family or themself.
This would not be neccessary if Windows was at least multi profile by default.
Windows XP will be multi-user by default with a colourfull login screen, yet another 'innovation' of MS which already existed for decades but what know one used in advertisment or knew of.:-)
They may not be doing anything illigal, but it threatens practical use of software like the Terminal Server, or like Internet Information Server.
MS 'threatens innovation' (innovative use of Terminal Server in this case);-) , except of course some company would actually seek software with more practical licisensing.
Underneat it, there's still a consistent versioning system.
When you use 'ver' in cmd/command (there are other means too) you'll get 4.x for 9x/ME, 4.xNT (or similar) for NT, 5.x for Windows 2000. XP will probably be 6.x or 5.5 or something.

I think it would be cool to have KDE for Windows.
More practically, I don't see much KDE/QT applications compiled for Windows.
What's in that article about Storm linux being bankrupted? I can't find anything about it at the Storm linux website.
I've installed Storm Linux on my desktop machine and I really like it.
Metoo, really sucks most rpm's in the world won't work because SuSe uses different RPM's.
I think RPM would be a lot better if RPM packages would be compatible with each other.
NASA doesn't just hunt down bugs, they use program verification techniques to formally 'proof' a program is correct.
Bug-hunting can only proof if a program is faulty.
As for Microsoft, a teacher I once had was pretty frustated I brilliant man in program verification started working for Microsoft (something about 'sold his soul' - oh well).
Intel is using similar techniques too.
While SuSe is not that bad, RPM 's of SuSe are incompatible with RedHat. When you want to install a RPM for Redhat, it'll usually will not install or even worse - the program won't run or something else won't run anymore.
At least Mandrake is compatible with RedHat, or better said, with RPM. I think any distribution that uses RPM should be compatible or not use RPM at all.
It's a new format developed by a German student, which is/aims to be completely patent free
I haven't tried it yet, but from what I heard it's fairly well.
A lot of Open Source project actually show what software can *really* be too, but anyway, he's right. MP3 is quite old, and ready to replace.
WMA has better quality and higher compression-rate.
Even more, maybe there will be sys admins who'll think it is wrong to put a server in locked behind fireprotected walls in a air-cooled basement, but that it should be besides their desk.
It's allready possible to create a encrtypted (loop back) filesystem/partition, where every file is encrypted. Unlike NT with it's driveletters, it works quite transparantly.
On the other hand, integrated encrypted per file would be very useful, if one could choose the encryption (via modules or something like that).
Real scientist don't care for politics. Naturally, the orig. writer really meant the scientist worked for the former sovjet union.
There's difference between being an idealist socialist or being someone who just enjoys science/exploration and doesn't care much for economical gain.

I did a quick seatch, this may also be interesting:
www.w3.org/TR/WD-Micropayment-Mark
Micropayment is the best way I think, instead of getting 2ct from a banner, you might as well get 1ct directly from the user.

In the Netherlands you have to pay for the water too.
The Gnome installer will use either Debian or RPM depending on the distrubution to register/install packages, so this is not an issue.
Another sometimes-used name is 'softmodem', which sounds correctly to me.

Hmm, even if you would turn *everything* (all included 'drivers' too) on, you wouldn't even use all of the source, since it is multi-platform.
