    And by the fact that IMAP is designed for a classical folder hierarchy which Gmail does not provide. I actually ditched it because I couldn't find a way to use it both via IMAP and via the Web interface that satisfied me.

    Anyway, your question is nothing compared to the ultimate roundabout adventure quest: How does a cyclist negotiate a roundabout. My advice is to bring water and sun-cream, because you're going to be stuck for a while.

    I had to get Acrobat Professional just so I could write simple scribbles and annotations on MY copy of the document, and even then some documents are "SECURED", and it won't let me alter them, despite them being MINE.

    The software you're using is to expensive. With Okular you can add notes and in its preferences dialog it has a checkbox à la "ignore DRM". It's note-taking functionality might be a bit limited, though.

    Credit card companies are by no means a monopoly or a duopoly. There are four major companies in the US alone, and several more in Europe. It's not a big market just because it's got a high barrier to entry, but it's by no means impenetrable.

    Any examples -- examples that are widespread enough to be useful, in particular?

    Some people suggest a federal VAT to replace state sales tax, but that's not the answer simply because the federal government can't tell the state governments that they can't have a tax
