Webshots messes with your computer much more than you think.
Webshots includes Gator and OfferCompanion, which are some of the bane of all evils in the spyware business. Now you know why you got so many popups on all those computers running webshots.
Webshots and KaZaa are exactly alike, except KaZaa includes a little more spyware, Webshots a little less.
Basically, you think you're using a friendly program, but all this evil stuff is done behind your back. GetRight comes to mind, as well, but at least it asks if you want the garbage installed or not.:-)
>you can fix the winsock problems by removing tcp/ip and then removing the mstcp tree in the registry.
That's assuming the user was intelligent enough to keep their CD. Since about 50% of the machines I work on have pirated windows, and worse yet, they didn't even keep the CD-R their brother/niece/friend installed it from, and the dough-heads didn't copy the cabs to the HD, I can't always fix it the "easy" way.
Remember, there's (may even be more!):
- Win 95 original
- Win 95 B
- Win 95 OSR2
- Win 95 OSR2.1
- Win 98
- Win 98 SE
- Win ME
- WinNT 4
- Win2k Professional
- Win2k Server
- Win2k Advanced Server
- WinXP Home Edition
- WinXP Professional
Too much stuff to lug about, not to mention it would be illegal for me to have many of those...
I like the new quality. I know there's some DRM in there, but it'll be cracked in no time.
The problem is we're going to be _forced_ to buy these new sets. And if anyone has been on slashdot for any amount of time, you'd know we're one defiant crowd.
If this were a dual-broadcast, companies-switch-as-they-like mantra, we'd not care at all (or at least I wouldn't).
But it isn't.
How would you like it if the US mandated everyone to have DSL VoIP phones instead of regular phone lines? Sounds nice to have DSL everywhere, but if/when they _force_ you to do that, you'd be pissed too.
Step 4: Realize you can't record in very many applications because ATI sold out to Microsoft and doesn't support the most popular windows video recording standard (vfw). Get pissed off, sell the card to someone, buy a $50 WinTV, and use the generic VfW drivers instead.
>If you can fool bayTSP with a trojan directory, it will return no copyright infringement here rather than blocked from access.
Better yet, set up a server with zero copyrighted material on it, and set up a trojan directory with hundreds of Gigabytes of seemingly copyrighted material (that just returns/dev/urandom when downloaded). Let's waste their time!
[ Isn't there a law against unlawful prosecution?:-) ]
I compeletely agree (apart from the occasional internet acronym, like IMHO). Using 'leet speak because you can't get the data typed in fast enough is a poor excuse for anyone fit enough to use a keyboard properly.
How about this one: At my HS, we were required to memorize Areopagitica (sp?) by Milton. I didn't. I remembered the last name (Milton). So he took about 5-10% off per missing word. After filling the entire margin with Xs (the guy had a very strong OCD) he gave me my final mark (drumroll): -378% Beat that!
>it was obvious to Phlox that the Menks were a developing race with great promise yet they were still being treated much as humans treated slaves in centuries past.
I don't think they were treated like slaves. Slaves were usually beaten into submission, along with other horrible human rights violations. I didn't see that on this episode. They had reasonable jobs that fit their intelligence, lived happily in their own communities, and didn't complain, even though they clearly had enough intelligence to be able to do that if they weren't happy.
That doesn't sound at all like slavery on earth. I certainly didn't hear the Menk singing "Wade in the Water"...:)
Not to mention I didn't see anything _forcing_ the Menk to work. They didn't have to, AFAIK. They just wanted to because they're all good hearted people on that planet. If only people could have this sort of co-existence here...
I simply saw a race of people whose intelligence has gone unnoticed. This isn't all that unusual -- even we do this with other animals (are dolphins smart? What would it take to convince you they are?).
>And imagine the difference in the world if Neanderthal's shared with Homo Sapiens the unfortunate tendencies towards genocide and prejudice.
The two races on the show were peacefully co-existing. There appeard to be no spite or malice towards the Menk, and this goes to prove that these races have no human reactions to such things as a lack of intelligence (most humans instinctually scorn this, and treat "stupid" people poorly).
>That's the danger with playing god: You end up being ethically responsible for the outcome.
The moment Phlox made the cure he became ethically responsible either way. It's a catch-22 -- do nothing, one race dies, and people blame it on you. Do something, and an unpredictable outcome happens.
Well, I'm told MacOS is an old version of an operating system for Macintosh computers, and not a mispelling for a Mechanics.:)
SuperDrive, though, huh? I heard through slashdot this was the name for some kind of DVD burner Apple sold that they used to screw over anyone wanting to use their software (or something like that, I really don't care about Apple all that much, sorry).
I'm not using this on an apple. And I'm not using windows. I'll leave the rest up to your imagination...:-)
What about those of us who bought this drive for a non-Microsoft operating system?
Yay... an.exe file updater (for Windows and not DOS, I don't doubt). I think I'll just destroy my burner with the 4x media and get Pioneer to replace it (under warranty), if that's their attitude.
>Cure the sick, leaving them to continue their subjugation of a developing species, or allow nature to take its course while doing what they could to ease suffering.
I think there was a huge plot hole left open in the episode -- the Valakians were never fully told (or shown) that the other species was approching a full intelligence. Had they done that and shown a poor reaction to it, it would have made much more sense.
However, considering how the Valakians never appeard to mistreat the Menk, I consider the Doctor a serious jerk in this case. It seems pretty obvious it would be better for the two species to live in harmony (which it seems they would) than let one be wiped out. Or at least that's what Greenpeace would like us to think.;-)
And, last but not least, the Doctor's counter-argument is a poor one at best. He doesn't consider the possibility that the two species (human/neanderthal) could possibly live together happily. Imagine the difference in the world if that had happened.
Fortunately, it still doesn't sour me on the captain. I just consider his feeble mind to have been swindled against by another half-argument.:-)
Lots of free stuff out there. If I had been home, I'd have enjoyed the new episode of the Enterprise at 5:00 pm, commercial free (clean) of course!
No going back to rabbit ears after having a laugh at the NASA station, no way.:-) Plus I get TechTV for free. It's like the comedy channel for techies (minus the screensavers, but very much plus the CyberCrime).
Plus you get more quality this way then you ever will with Cable or DSS. Woohoo!
You just need to get to know the right people -- ie: people who know where the stores are (computer stores are notorious for pathetic/non-existant marketing).
For example, if you're in the K-W area, here's where you can shop:
There's more I can't think of right now, and one wholesale place that (IMHO) baits 'n switches (well, considering my anger on the phone, no switch, but lots of bait) that I won't mention. All these guys specialize in different stuff.
Or walk up and down College St. in TO -- there's about 20 shops side-by-side there.
Or, save a whole lot of money and go here (My guess is they'll have 80 Gig HDDs for $130 CDN this time).
>Same folks that would help sort your rookie card collection as a child.
That brings back some mixed memories.
Some "friend" did that to me once. Later in life, when I looked through them, I was, of course, less than happy (although there was still a Sosa or whatever that guy who hit the huge homerun in the set).
I took solace in the fact that he was in special ed last time I heard about him (well over a decade ago). I guess that's the circle of life for ya.
>Why for god's sake? Don't you work, don't you like getting paid?
Well, I'm a private consultant. If I weren't paid, I wouldn't go around saying the customer is a "theif". I'd just look silly saying "By not paying me he stole $300 from me." People would think I'm a goof.
Now, if I said "He defrauded me by not paying me $300" I'd look like a normal, everyday person, and not a raving lunatic who says everything is stealing.
>For example, if you tap into the cable system for free cable TV, you're guilty of Theft of Service.
That interesting. In Canada, we would just say you are guilty of violating section 9(c) of the Radio and Telecommunications act of 1991.
Maybe in America they charge you with theft for it, but me thinks the cable-co's would have a similar special law just for them.
If it's just theft, well, let's see, normally for shoplifting a $40 item from the grocery store I would get a week of community service and a $100 fine. Is that all I'd get for "stealing" a month of TV?
In that case, I'm all for the re-definition of the term! Just try and stop me, I'm not afraid!
>No restaurant would ever choose Pepsi if Pepsi and Coke were offered at the same price.
Then I'd rather not go to that restaurant (although I'm not that picky on what I drink, but I often do ask for a Pepsi, rather than a Coke). Pepsi tastes better. Probably more sugar. Mmmmmm...
For me, Pepsi bets Coke served ice cold, Coke beats Pepsi served lukewarm. And that's why I always lose the Pepsi Challenge -- the idiots serve the stuff lukewarm. Blech!

That's a really good idea. Thanks for the tip!

Cleaning up KaZaa ruined machines makes me a decent part time living! :-)
I'd be out of business if it weren't for KaZaa and WebShots... (well, not really, but I'd be out of _easy_ jobs).
Don't worry, I always tell my users not to use these programs after I've cleaned up their messes.
>If people are coming into my country, I sure as hell want to know that they aren't going to be a danger to anyone.
Me too. That's why this system is a complete waste of money.
Actually, I was waiting for a keyboard on one.
I ain't writing on no plastic screen after having a blackberry.
Thumboards/keyboards are about 100x better than touchscreens anyday, IMHO.
I might actually buy one with a keyboard if it's cheap enough. Lord knows I've needed one of these for long enough...

Me too. But only for one hour (if I were lucky)...

Or one milliard if you're not American. Thankfully (or not), I'm Canadian, so I have to know about both.

Well, I have friends who would suggest I'm with Shakespeare on that one.
