The register had an article a while back about Psion are bringing out a Digital Radio which will have the potential for fast internet access
Allegly the BBC here in the UK, according to this article in the register will be doing just that in the not too distant future, hook the radio to your PC via its USB port and forget phone lines becuase in theory you could recieve data at up to 1.5 Meg per second.
Sorry
Yes I knew the 900 Mhz was frequency not clock speed...
but I couldn't resist, call it the lure of the dark side.
You spend all day on a computer, see 900 Mhz in a post, and go on admit it, the first thing you think of is over clocking!
I was just thinking Jaguar comparisons then I saw your post, why bother posting twice eh?
You hit the nail on the head, even if hordes of OS and Nix devotees buy, it is doomed. I wish Indrema the best of luck but even Atari died with a dececent console with decent opening games (see Aliens vs Predator)
Where are their deep pockets for marketing and subsidising the losses on the console.
How do they expect to get by without royalty fees like Sony, Sega and Dreamcast
I see no mention on their web site of even one major league developer...hmm this reeks of laterday Amiga style vapourware.
Sure they will probably bring out a technically amazing console, but who will buy it ?
These days it matter not whether you have the best hardware its the marketing that matters and
We all know that Microsoft will have the biggest war chest for marketing, and even if their console stinks Jo Public will buy it en masse because its Microsoft.
Of course Sony's PSX2 will sell by the bucket load but even they will find it hard to meet Micorsoft marketing power.
At my work, a bunch of us have 900Mhz wireless headphones
900Mhz ?
Was that before or after you overclocked them ?

Unfortunately, in the US today prior art does not stop you getting a patent. Instead, you have to file a lawsuit challenging the patent first, then bring the prior art as evidence, and hope the judge agrees with you.
Oh kinda like the Prior Art in the episode of the Simpsons, where Bart discovered an original film reel from the real creator of Itchy and Scratchy.
Except Bart only needed a few thousand dollars to file a lawsuit on behalf of the hobo.
P.s Don't try and tell me that the Simpsons is not like real life. Exagerrated it may be but so is Dilbert and don't tell me Dilbert is unrealistic (Well you've got to believe in your heroes)

what about all the other fantasy settings that deserve a film we've not seen many... a cartoon LOTR, a half arsed Dune, a passable battlefield earth maybe its time for fresh inspiration.
Theres a few fantasy films that I'd love to see made:
Dragonlance: Either from the D&D adventures or the orignal books. If only to have Tas and Raistlin in a movie...
Fafhrd & The Gray Mouser: Weird plot lines, weird characters, weird leopard boats... would make a great film and Terry Pratchett obviously took his Death persona from these books.
Elric: The series would tranfser to film very well, the ending might put a damper on any sequels though...
Some people are not very good at socialising face to face. So a Computer Mediated Communications medium such as IRC allows them to socialise more confidently albeit from within a different medium.
It all depends whether you think f2f communication is necessary for our well being.
With the increasing use of non f2f visual communications do we need 'real life' interaction ?
As for those people who use chatrooms as a shield to hide behind are surely benefitting from technology not becoming a slave to it.
If no CMC environment existed they would surely be MORE prone to drop out of society and avoid social interaction.
For those of us who are born loners and who feel uncomftable in socialising in groups f2f, the net encourages us to socialise.
Communicating in newgroups and chat rooms can be more socially motivating. No problems with egos or social status, no one can see if you're feeling depressed, looking ugly, overweight or like some anorexic stick insect.
Who cares if english is a foreign language to you, everyone elses spelling is so bad on the net you just blend in...
No one notices who or what you are, you are just judged purely on what you say.
Take/. , you don't get flamed for being a newbie.
If you say something interesting and contribute to the discussions, people listen. Hell even the trolls say something intelligent every so often.
Essentially the net is the great leveller, it encourages greater communication.
Stuck out in the sticks, no need to get depressed.
Just get on the net and you'll find more interesting people than you'd believe
Presumably if everyone started putting up sigs including as many dodgy words as possible they would spend all day reading pointless posts like this one.
So everyone include words like:-
guns, bomb, terrorist, bomber, semtex, nuclear weapon, spy, communist in your sig now!
Its hopelessly low tech but the easiest way to give'em a headache.
Elections shouldn't be about choosing which candidate we dislike least, or symbolic and pointless exercises in voting for people who can't possibly win
That is the main reason why the identikit Democratic/Republican candidate always wins.
Yeah realistically you know it only a two horse race, so pick the lesser of the two evils.
But what if we stopped thinking like that and shock actually voted with our conscience. In the short term you're vote probably won't count, but if enough people follow it will change the voting culture enough to break the two party system.
People like Nader won't get elected for the sole reason that voters think they don't have a chance of being elected, its a vicious cycle that will take generations of voter education to break.
Here in the UK we also have a 2 party system. But minority parties have started to get round this through tactical voting and sheer perseverance, by getting involved in local poltics more and actually showing they really care about the voters.
Sorry John I know your hearts in the right place, but encouraging people NOT to vote is so wasteful.
Encouraging people to vote according to their beliefs, aspirations and their conscience picking the party that supports them should matter.
Please vote, make your vote count, vote for who you really believe in irrespective of whether or not they are electorally viable because in the long term your vote will matter
What is the answer to Life, the Universe and Everything.
THAT is the question...
Its just that in THHGTTG by the time Deep Thought had worked out that the answer was 42, the descendants of the people that developed deep thought had forgotten the question.
I've read that REBOL could be useful for web scripting, but have no idea performance wise where it would fit in against PHP,ColdFusion, JSP, & ASP
Anyone used it for web scripting yet ?
or Copernic
All is not lost...

yeah and when you want to code for the PS/2 you go ask IBM, as its sure to be in their patent database.
You wait till the movie version of Lord Of The Rings is released.
Then you will have a real reason to complain about the number of trolls.
Bah Humbug
The next big thing is gonna be the ZX Spectrum console its gonna be huge (and its only £9.99 in the UK, including 2000 games!!!)
See this article in the register or this advertisement for the console (sold as the MegaJoy 2000

Too true, academic credentials are overated.
Tim Berners-Lee tried to publish a paper about his new idea for the internet(The WWW) and academia snubbed him because of his academic credentials.
Of course those same academics are now falling over themselves to have him write articles for their learned journals.....

Why else would it be called the Big Bang theory ?
