I'm a Windows user. I've spent the vast majority of my time on Windows, and I've barely *touched* Linux (Installed Corel Linux, didn't get around to using it, and dumped it in favor of Win2000).
I've been around Slashdot for a pretty good while, and pretty much this has been my only connection to Linux users.
There are a LOT of Linux users on here that preach Linux as their religion and Linus is their prophet. I browse at a threshhold of -1, and visit Slashdot quite often, and there are SO many flames if someone even mentions they use Windows. Most of these are moderated down, thankfully, but the eloquent flames are left unmoderated. Since moderation began, most of the Linux preachers have shut up (concerns about karma does wonders), but there are still a lot of flames.
The "98% of users make the other 2% look bad" is a lot closer to the truth than the other way around.
By the way, I haven't been disenchanted with Linux due to the majority of users -- I still plan on getting around to learning Linux (once I get someone to help me out, any volunteers? mail me).
I was thoroughly impressed with their video & audio editing as well. Great dubbing! Great bandwith too, i got well over 200k/sec on the download (on cable modem, I rarely get even close to 200).
Windows 2000 has LESS bugs than its predecessors. I run Win2K, and I have yet to have problems. True, I haven't run this as long as I had run Win NT or 95 or 98, but this seems to be *much* better.
A lot of people don't CARE for learning about their computers, believe it or not. I know this sounds weird to most of you slashdotters, but its true. My aunt doesn't know how everything is set up on her computer, and she doesn't really care to learn. I set up the Internet for her, so she didn't have to learn, but I know if I wasn't available to help her, she wouldn't go learn how to do it on her own -- she would just get AOL.
One of my favorite scenes is when the Simpson's went to Maine (I think) for summer vacation. Lisa made some friends, and she goes "Eat my shorts!" They all crack up, and Bart subsequently complains to Marge "Mom, she's stealing my lines!"
Marge responds, "C'mon Bart, you haven't said that in years!"
Always nice to see a show that can make fun of itself:)
I don't know how you could have spent 10 minutes looking for it.. looking up "karma" and "howto" within the comments gave me this, which is what you're referring to.
I once got in a heated argument with an Anonymous Coward over this..
I made the argument you did. "Slashdot is not censoring anything,..." and "Censorship is making something completely unreadable for any reason."
Merriem-Webster defines "censhor" (the transitive verb) as "to examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable."
By default, the threshhold is 0. The minimum score is -1. Therefore, by default, many comments are "suppress"ed.
By the way, I don't necessarily agree with this argument. I don't really agree with your argument either (even though it was the argument I made once upon a time). I think that Slashdot moderation would be wonderful if it was improved. I bitch about moderation since there I would like a better Signal-Noise ratio. I don't bitch without offering solutions, though. I started sid=moderation (the link is in my sig) to identify problems and offer solutions.
If you were wondering, yes, my threshhold is -1. The reason it is, however, isn't because I'm scared of censorship, because I know that no comments are deleted. My threshhold is -1 because so many comments are poorly moderated, I need to drop the threshhold to view all helpful discussion.
No, I don't like reading Mick, Mcdougal, & Trollmastah's discussions about the morning coffee (although their songs are quite humorous), but I deal with it because the moderation system right now leaves a lot to be desired.
Not that I can help you with anything else (I'm a Windows user who knows *about* Linux, but hasn't had the time/inclination to actually try setting it up), but yes, there is a USB port. It's under the fan on the left side, all the way to the back of the laptop.
While I can't find the link right now... I was under the impression that Linux was supported on the 600E other than the modem. Is that your only gripe, or is there something else?
Keep in mind, you may not be the intended audience. The vast majority of Slashdotters found the style & colors of the iBook to be quite toilet-seat like, and generally disliked it. Nevertheless, the iBook is selling quite well.
The style of the iPalm is dependant on whom Apple views as its intended audience.
www.trgpro.com... TRG-Pro has it's own website. They're nice, I was considering cancelling my Palm Vx order and ordering one of these. I can still, does anyone else think I should?
Back on topic, I read the article, and I didn't see anything to say what differentiates a iPalm vs. a 3Com Palm.
Besides the fruity colors (pun intended) which everyone expects, what will be in this iPalm to make it worth buying? Apple is great at design, but the Palm V series is great as it is. What would make me buy a iPalm over a regular Palm, if they were the same price?
Read his sig. He (like I) would like to improve Slashdot. It's a great place, but it could stand to be improved. I started the sid=moderation thread for a reason, and thats to take care of issues that Slashdot has.
The quality of writing in this article leaves a lot to be desired. For some reason I don't trust this author....
Not to seem off-topic (because really, it's not), but seeing how/. is adding more topics (like that "programming" one (or maybe I didn't notice it before)), could a "rumors" category be added? I'm sick of all those unsubstantiated rumors in which all the comments go "wow! that's amazing," then, "whoa, something's wrong," then, "IT'S A HOAX," then "SLASHDOT SuCkS! CHECK YO' SOURCES!! MORONS!!!!"
By cutting them some slack, that (1) decreases trust in Linux-related companies, and (2) encourages other "companies" to jump onto the Linux bandwagon to "make a quick buck".
Well, Wired has written an article about how the "Linux IPO Plan Draws Fire", but that was months ago. Seeing how much Wired News pays attention to Slashdot (/. is constantly referenced), is there any way for Slashdot to suggest a story to Wired? They're obviously interested based on their first story...
Fear/Uncertainty/Doubt. Basically, its negative publicity for a company, that's baseless. Microsoft is infamous for projecting FUD about competing products (most recently, Linux).
Heh. I go to RPI for school, and I'm dealing with Troy well enough. Schenectady is rolling out Roadrunner as we speak I believe (friends in Niskayuna are getting it right now).
I need to get out to a REAL city! Once I graduate, then I decide (sucks being a Freshman, though...)
A thought.. A huge dome over the RPI campus to keep a constant 68 degree Farenheit temperature would be quite nice. Add wireless ethernet, and you've got a kick-ass campus.
Right now, it sucks to walk across campus when it's so damn cold. Argh..

Reread what I wrote. I said that I didn't conclude it had less bugs because I didn't find a bug...
I did not intend that. Unfortunately I can't find the numbers, but I meant "Win2K has less bugs AND I have less problems."
Apologies.

Be flabbergasted.

I use Roadrunner (through Time Warner (and now AOL?)), and many IP addresses for RR are 24.92.*.*, 24.29.*.*, and (most recently I've seen) 24.25.*.*.
I was under the impression that Roadrunner had nothing to do with @Home?

Just my rant.

8 x 288Mb = 288MB.
(Eight bits in a byte).
Therefore, 16 x 288Mb = 576MB.
Hope this helps.

Ah well, just my thoughts.

LinuxOne should be made an example of.
Doesn't Slashdot have the clout?

"When will the SLASH source code be updated?"
Dammit. Did it again.
I shouldnt' have posted anonymously. That first post of the year was mine! I swear.
