I know that counts, but it shouldn't. This is one of the BIG issues with how the world classify's an invention. Personally I don't think taking an idea from someone and making an edit that deviates the design and function less then 1% should count as a radical new invention. However nothing will ever change because company's like Apple need this kind of system to make money, take it away and they will be back in the garage.
A real invention just means you that you came up with something new or interesting, everything I know from Apple is just a new play on a theme with a white apple sticker put on top.
You never need to bring a product to market. As long as you can demonstrate the idea works and has been accepted then it doesn't matter. I can't just go out, find a research project, copy it and sell it, that's not ethical, not moral and not legal.
Well actually Apple never developed the GUI or User Interface. The "GUI" was actually developed decades before Apple even built a computer. I was trying to find the video from youtube but it might of got taken down. There was a video of a researcher in the 60's playing with a mouse and keyboard and moving a mouse pointer. Unless Steve Jobs was about 80 when he died then I fail to see how Apple invented the user interface.
However extracting this out, does apple really invent anything? Siri is just voice analysis which isn't new or clever or even that hard, as I did music genre detection for my final project in University, so I can tell you it's pretty simple. Apple didn't invent the smart phone, they didn't create the tablet, they didn't create Unix which is what OS X is based on and they didn't invent the intel CPU they run. So what does Apple invent? Having a little bit of software for messages or screen locking or even a GUI layout is hardly inventing anything, I consider more a look and feel which personally I don't think should be protected I mean anyone could do the same thing, you don't have to be a leader in the computer field.
So I rest with what does Apple invent? Seems to me they take and sue but thats about it.
Maybe its just me but if why is this a big deal. If MySQL goes closed source then just switch to one of the hundreds of other databases and run with it.
Time to play the Apple game. I think this is a good idea, how about stopping the one company who's personal mission it is to cripple everyone else. Apple is the school yard bully and no one does anything to stop it, not the teachers, not the parents and not the principal, so maybe it's time that Apple gets put in timeout.
Which means nothing because you need to compare the full cost of the phone off the plan. If were talking about the phone itself then including a plan discount is skewing your point. So the Samsung S3 is $650 if your buy it straight, The HTC Desire C is $150, The Blackberry 9900 is $600 and the iPhone is still $850, making far more expensive then any of the other top contending phones. All my prices are with out a plan which is what matters.
That silly thing doesn't account for the difference from $199 to $850, according to google as of 10:02am the conversion rate from CAD to USD: 1 Canadian dollar = 1.01174 U.S. dollars, which can doesn't account for the difference. Outright the iPhone is much more expensive for 0 added features and 0 added benefit, other then an Apple stick on the back.
Your not even close, Right now if I go out and buy an iPhone 4s it will cost me $850 Before Tax!!!!! That is insane, no phone is worth that much. I just looked it up on www.virginmobile.ca
That's my point, Apple isn't doing a favor to the iPhone by going with a special connector when everyone else and there dog uses USB. We are in an age when commercial devices for the everyday person are expected to be compatible connector wise. I'm NOT talking about the special hardware that is specializes to a purpose and needs a special connector for it's own type of data, I'm talking about objects like Phones, GPS units, Mp3 players and etc..... Having a special format connector for those devices just separates you from a market that you could fit into.
Why do people care that the connector is changing. Personally I don't anything that doesn't use a standard good old available and open USB connector. All changing the connector does is make it harder to interface to devices and objects. Basically with Apple changing the connector they're saying "We don't want our users to be able to easily and readily use our products for interfacing, lets make them spend extra money because we need to be different", this is yet another thing Apples is doing to piss me off. Just standardize to the rest of the market Apple, you look like a fool using a proprietary connector.
He didn't even do anything!! He owned a site which released documents that everyone had a RIGHT to see. Just because a document is classified doesn't mean the public shouldn't be aware. He shouldn't be arrested or in trouble, he should be thanked for releasing information that frankly is everyone's business.
your talking about the ideal case! I think students should be using older computer to do everything. Lets teach the "leaders" of tomorrow how everything really works. As a better experiment take a "software engineer" ( if they really exist ) and put them on a computer from the 1980's, I'm going to venture a reserved guess that 90% of the current students graduating couldn't write a program which could run. Same idea with the students, before you can have the pleasure of using Libre Office Writer you need to demonstrate that you can script in LaTex and produce the results you want. We could teach kids a lot about how computer actually work by letting them experience the truth behind the scenes.
Here is why this is Annoying, in grade 8 back in 2000 I got in trouble for asking that Linux be installed on a school computer. Apparently asking for something the "board certified" computer tech didn't understand was against the rules. I'm glad Linux is finally making its way into the class room but it's about 12 years to late. If school funding is always a key topic for debate then why the hell are we spending money on bloated under featured operating systems and office suites when everything exists for the big cost of 0.
That doesn't prove anything. That shows an Ethernet port on the side of the notebook beside two USB 3.0 ports. Which is almost an ideal layout for a side of the notebook, on the other side should be another USB 3.0 port, One HDMI port and a Optical disk drive. The ultimate notebook would still include an RS-232 port but it's HIGHLY unlikely you'll find one.
If I'm buying a notebook I'm not going to accept the fact it doesn't come with an Ethernet port. That would be like making a notebook with out a keyboard but making an adapter for a keyboard. There are some standard ports that must come with new computers, just because Apple decides that it doesn't need to include them doesn't mean there right.
I really wouldn't be surprised if Apples next move was to get rid of the keyboard, the Onion was making a joke in the video the iWheel but I'm willing to put money on the fact that Apple will get rid of the keyboard just to save room, of course every fan boy will line up to get a new one.
My view of Apple isn't routed in the 90's it's routed from all the REALLY stupid choices they make. For instance shipping a new notebook with out an Ethernet port, or shipping a computer with out a DVD / CDROM drive. How about building a tablet so big it's impractical ( iPad1 and 2 ), How about your only real selling point is the fact you are 1 mm thinner then the other guy. etc..... So I'm not routed in the 90's I just need products and technology that isn't designed by completely morons.
How about we stop caring about Apple and just make the better product. Apple sells because of fan base they have, that is the only reason. They don't have better build quality, they don't have better hardware and they don't have better software, they just have fans. So instead of worrying about Apple, how about a company like Google just works hard and releases a better product.
The better product wont always sell more but at least you can feel good knowing you did your best, you'll sell enough to make a profit and at the end of the day it wont matter. Of course if you really want the big numbers just stick a sticker of an Apple on the back and paint the tablet white, trust me your sales will double and people wont even turn the damn thing on.
It just comes down to what feels good for you. At least for me the "ergonomic" rule book needs to go out the window, I end up with more strain, more discomfort and less productivity if I do everything the so called "ergonomic" way. If I have to code for hours, I have my chair tilted back, I have my hand on the edge of the desk, I have my feet moving under the desk and I switch positions every few minutes. From the "ergonomic" point of view I have about the worlds worst setup but from the how I feel and how much work I get done view I have the best. Just keep trying what works for you and you'll hit a point where you'll find your own "ergonomic" setup. I put the word in quotes because I don't believe there is a one fit for everyone, it's almost black magic.
The lightbulb, The steam power locamotive, The number 0, Fire

Fund away, as long as I get to play my video games.
