I'm not disconnected with the realities but the reality of the situation is that we have A LOT of teachers making a living who can't teach. We have more teachers who don't give a crap and the small rare chunk who deserve a job,. If a child comes home after a day or being taught by a teacher who doesn't care then I say it is up to the parent to sit down and help. They might work two jobs and they might be uneducated but the second you bring someone into this world you have a duty. One of the duties you have and must follow is to bring them up properly and that means educating them.

Ideally the solution is to just get rid of all bad teachers but honestly that might leave a teaching force of about 30% it's current size, so it's no really doable. I recognize that there exists a poverty bracket and I recognize that life is hard for most people but if we don't start making the difference now then it never gets better.

If you treat a teacher like an engineer then I think we would have a much better education system. If an engineer screws up or makes mistakes or doesn't understand what he's doing he / she gets fired and BANDED from the engineering society. This is what we need for teachers, prove you can teach, make a good record for yourself and you will have job security. If you wanted a free ride then game over.

I don't want to underplay your post, I'm just trying to mention here that we have a system built of 1/2 ass teachers and then we have more parents who aren't putting the rest of the effort in. it's a never ending cycle, we need to break it.

These are the teachers we need out of the education system. As a teacher you should be a master at inspiring and training kids. When you can't explain concepts from a textbook in a way that it becomes very natural for kids then you do not deserve to teach. Parents are the icing on the cake, but before you ice it you need a solid base made up and that is the teachers job. You wouldn't let a non baker in a bake shop so why let a crap teacher in a class room.

There is nothing hard or advanced in elementary school, that by the time your an adult you shouldn't know. I think there should be a second committee to fire all teachers who aren't able to teach.

I say this after fighting with office 2007 and 2010 today as the auto numbering system completely corrupted my document. Office doesn't need any more cosmetic updates, it doesn't need any more ribbons, any more hidden menus or any more flash. What office needs is to be redesigned at its core, features like its formatting system need to redesigned to work. Features like it's grammar and spell check engine need to be worked on, if Microsoft tries hard they might be able to release a document system as good or better then Libre Office, but I doubt it!

I say this entire thing comes down the preference of the developer. Personally I don't care, you can sit me down at any database and I'll learn it.

  12. I hate seeing posts like this, Agile is not for lazy developers, in fact it's for developers who want to do what there name suggests, develop!. To the group who ran this study I would like to see the actual line out of the Agile guide that states "You can not plan", then show me "You can not write documentation". Some Agile developers will use Agile to skip doing documentation and planning but that's not the point of Agile. Agile is for the developer who can think on his feet and dance around in the ring, it's not for the developer who needs to sit down and draw out 50 pages of requirement before a key gets pressed.

There are pro's and con's to both development methods. Some people can work better in an Agile environment and some can't, calling Agile out as a lazy development method just means you don't understand it, you just wanted to pick up the name because it sounds cool and cutting edge. Agile developers in fact get much more work down but at the cost of harder work. At the end of an Agile project you should end up with the same results, just quicker and in most cases a better final product.

No where does Agile proclaim itself as the No Documentation king or the No Requirement king, it's lazy developers and lazy survey holders who give it that name, and in this case it's clear the surveyors had no idea what they were talking about.

I wrote a tool for my school capstone project called eLogger, its a C based program which plugs into a GTK interface and you can log what ever you need to through it. I've been using it for 8 months now and it's worked out great. If the school will let me I will send it to you, but you could also write your own, this one took me two weeks to write.

  15. Not Really on Does Grammar Matter Anymore? · · Score: 1

This is a good post because last week I pointed out how grammar doesn't really matter any more. Now don't get me wrong, there is a time and a place for proper writing style but in most of the day to day activity we deal with it just doesn't matter.

For instance if I make some spelling mistakes, use the wrong form of there or to and don't use comma's you'll still understand what I wrote. If what I just mentioned would throw you for such a loop it would make my writing unreadable then the issue isn't the author is the literacy of the reader. Grammar exists to help give hints or clues on how the author intends for his works to be understood, even with out good grammar in 99.999% of all cases you get along just fine as long as they use the common period.

So this leads to an interesting point, most of communication today is quick one off remarks and tweets and one liners and etc.... Nothing that requires full blown public technical document level standards. To this regard grammar is dead, when it comes into play is when the written work has to matter, such as a big public technical document, until then just write and leave it.

  16. Religion vs Evolution on South Korea Will Revisit Plan To Nix Evolution References in Textbooks · · Score: 1

Evolution doesn't fly in the face of Religion, in many cases it actually helps it out. Teaching Evolution doesn't mean that you have to teach a godless universe, it just means you pose an alternative to the story of humanity. No one is saying that a "god" couldn't of kicked the bucket and placed the event in line for the big bang to happen, maybe Evolution took over from there. No one is saying that maybe a "god" didn't create the universe and heavens and simply put the right chemicals in place to support Evolution, all it's saying is that you need to keep an open mind.

When you study Religion and throw off the theory that we evolved your surcoming to the trap that Religion builds. Religion is there to explain what might exist beyond the known universe and that's all it really does, it's not there to force belief that in seven days ( or your own reference ), we all got placed on earth and it was good to go.

When you eliminate Evolution your giving up trying to use logic and meaning, your taking the easy way out, almost like cheating on a test, you think you have all the answers so just copy them down and don't look back!
