This is all fine...until it becomes common to the point that just about "every" new car has them. Right now its hard to tell who has what system with the vast majority having no system at all. Once it is "assumed" you have one then it becomes worth it for people to hack it.
a few years ago some gas station got the bright idea to put speakers right in the handle of the gas nozzle blaring out commercials. They were obviously built real tough with the expectation people would try to "disable" them. Unfortunately for me it was the best gas station to use along my route then but it was funny to watch the effects of the different attempts to "take them out" over time. I saw puncture holes, expoxy/glue, and sometimes people managed to rip the whole speaker out itself! For some reason at least half the pumps were always "out of service" there. After about a year they got new pumps without speakers...hmm.
The cable companies are allowed to charge what they do based on total number of channels offered. These are rules established by the FCC when they allowed competition in local markets, consolidation, etc. The reason they are fighting it is obvious with this in mind. If pricing is based on total number of channels you are subscribing to then those of us who only want a few(like me) will save a lot of money. The thing to watch out for is how much the FCC would change the pricing system under something like this.
I used to be a big believer in NASA but they really represent the worst way to do space technology. They are full of design-by-committee pork projects. It is in NASA's best interest to keep the projects as expensive and complicated as possible in order to maintain the status-quo. They want to maintain the illusion that only something like a "NASA" is capable of doing anything in space. I say bullshit to that. I think the private sector will ultimately trump all of these expensive government projects whether its from NASA, Russia, ESA or whatever.
I wish I had a link to a satire article called "Flatlanders"? which really put the issue into perspective for me. Anyone have a link?
Man go Troll somewhere else. Me thinks you couldnt spot quality from a parsec away. If you can't follow the story and see the interweaving plots, etc..then its YOUR imagination and comprehension that are at question.
"Come on!!!!! This ain't even hardware!!"
True...but unless you get another ethernet card they DO have your MAC address. I can see a cookie finding its way back to their servers with that info. I would definately not use the ethernet it came with ever.
Speaking of college kids rebelling against authority. How many of these same kids also rebel against drinking laws? Not too many freshman are 21 and they drink plenty..illegal. Lets see...smoking WEED. Another illegal activity college kids do on a regular basis. Why will this be any different? Just chalk up one more illegal thing for them kids to do. Heck..its more fun that way anyway.

I guess Psychohistory is here! I just wish Isaac Asimov would have lived a bit longer.

shame if anything were to "happen" to it.
Your forgetting how easy it is to copy DVD's, any DVD..from Netflix too even. I know a lot of people who copy every DVD they rent.
